Hewer: GCSE Islam, Expressions, Halal and haram, Background 2, page 1 Background article: Expressions, Halal and haram Classification of actions Drawn from the sources of Qur'an and sunna, Islamic law came to recognise five categories of human actions. These are: Those actions that are obligatory (for fard we can also say wajib) o for every Muslim individually (fard 'ayn) e.g., prayer, fasting o for the community as a whole but which can be performed by a group on behalf of the community (fard kifaya) e.g., taking part in funeral prayers Those recommended acts that carry a reward if performed but do not involve punishment if omitted (sunna or mustahabb) e.g., visiting the sick Neutral acts which carry neither punishment nor reward as people are free to choose (mubah) e.g., types of diet, styles of dress Actions that are disapproved of but attract no specific punishment (makruh) e.g., smoking Any actions that are clearly forbidden and carry a punishment if they are committed (haram) e.g., drinking alcohol. The opposite of something that is forbidden (haram) is something that is permissible (halal); this is exemplified in the dietary laws in Background article 1. Only relatively few acts are classified as fard or haram, the vast majority of human acts are neutral (mubah). Human life is much more inspired by good etiquette and manners, rather than prohibition or obligation. The role model for Muslim etiquette and manners is Muhammad himself. Naturally, there are some variations of opinion amongst scholars regarding the three middle categories but there is a principle that nothing that God has made haram can be made halal and vice-versa. As time goes on and knowledge advances, some actions in the middle categories may well be re-classified. For example, some would today classify smoking as forbidden, as it is now known seriously to damage health. The rulings derived from the Qur'an and sunna are a blessing from God as they guide human beings on the path of flourishing in this life and to the reward of paradise. Īmān, Islām, taqwā, kufr, shirk, and nifāq are, the six significant terms, used in the Noble Qur‟an frequently. All of them represent the characteristics of human beings. The possessors of these characters will go to their eternal destination; the Jannah or Jahannam. The Jannah is the aftermath of īmān, Islam and taqwā. On the other hand, kufr, shirk, and nifāq lead to the Jahannam. This study intends to present the definitions and examples of these six terms according to the Qur‟anic statement, and then shed light on the impact of each character on human life quoting the evidence from the Holy Qur‟an and the Traditions of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The possessors of these six remarkable terms are entitled successively as mu'min, muslim, muttaqī to be rewarded Jannah and kafīr, mushrik, and munāfiq to be punished in Jahannam. Signature Date ii ABSTRACT Islam maintains that the relationship between the husband, wife and the children should be based on mutual love and care, joy, happiness, co-operation, peace, unity, tranquility and the husband and the wife ought to console each other in other to forfeit the adornment of life. In other words, the couples should be family oriented for sustainability and survival of the family. A majority of Muslims in Mampurugu are of the view that children are the gift of God and He will sustain the lives of these children, hence the call for the establishment of large families within the Muslim communities while caring for them is left at the mercy of the Almighty Allah. The assumption, therefore, is that Islam attaches much importance to giving birth to many children but the responsibility of the upbringing of the children by the parents is neglected and rather put into the care of God, hence, there is lackadaisical attitude by Muslim parents towards birth control or family planning in the communities.

If she does correct the mistake and the Imam accepts the correction, the Salah Ibn Abbas (Radhiyallahu Anhu) narrated that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) used to pray will be valid.

Page 1/21 Abstract Background: Religious factor has been used in tobacco control campaign but due to different perception among the Muslim scholars that might induce on the followers then, the control program strategics is still interesting to study. This qualitative research is, therefore aimed to explore the perspective of Muslim adolescents on smoking habits, as a reference in developing effective prevention intervention programs. Methods: Three Focus Group Discussion (FGD) sets, consisting of a total of 24 junior high school students were the main source data for this phenomenological qualitative study. The discussion guide was developed by researchers, based on the reviewed literature and validated by experts. The research nding was analyzed by using an inductive-content method with systematical steps based on the stages of qualitative data analysis. Results: Adolescent perspectives on smoking were grouped into two themes that were (a) perception, which encompasses three sub-themes consisting of smoking as the social habit, the contradictive feeling, and the Islamic perspective, (b) Smoking-related factors involving peer pressure, the parents’ smoking status, curiosity and masculinity.

Both Saddam Hussein and Ayatollah ‘Ali Khamenei have called the bloody flagellation practices, which have only increased in popularity in Sayyida Zaynab over the past few decades, ‘backward’ and ‘irrational.’ Why do these outsiders condemn these Twelver Shi‘is and their Muharram rituals? Why are ‘traditional’ practices popular in the Syrian shrine-town of Sayyida Zaynab? What does ‘tradition’ mean in this context? This dissertation begins with the last question regarding the notion of ‘tradition’ and examines seminary pedagogy, weekly women’s ritual mourning gatherings, annual Muharram practices, and non-institutionalized spiritual healing. Two theoretical paradigms frame the ethnography. The first is Talal Asad’s (1986) notion that an anthropology of Islam should approach Islam as a discursive tradition and second, various iterations of the Karbala Paradigm (Fischer 1981). The concepts overlap, yet they also represent distinct approaches to the notion of ‘tradition.’ The overarching argument in this dissertation is that ‘tradition’ for Twelver Shi‘is in Sayyida Zaynab is not only a rhetorical trope but also an intimate, inter-subjective practice, which ties pious Shi‘i to the members of the Family of the Prophet.
