Ryan Joseph O’Byrne, 21 September 2016 2 ABSTRACT This thesis examines contemporary entanglements between two cosmo-ontological systems within one African community. The first system is the indigenous cosmology of the Acholi community of Pajok, South Sudan; the other is the world religion of evangelical Protestantism. Christianity has been in the region around 100 years, and although the current religious field represents a significant shift from earlier compositions, the continuing effects of colonial and early missionary encounters have had significant impact. This thesis seeks to understand the cosmological transformations involved in all these encounters. This thesis provides the first in-depth account of South Sudanese Acholi – a group almost entirely absent from the ethnographic record. However, its largest contributions come through wider theoretical and ethnographic insights gained in attending to local Acholi cosmological, ontological, and experiential orientations. These contributions are: firstly, the connection of Melanesian ideas of agency and personhood to Africa, demonstrating not only the relational nature of Acholi personhood but an understanding of agency acknowledging nonhuman actors; secondly, a demonstration of the primarily relational nature of local personhood whereby Acholi and evangelical persons and relations are similarly structured; and thirdly, an argument that, in South Sudan, both systems are ultimately about how people organise the moral fabric of their society. -

The Case of Dongolawi Nubian
Taha A. Taha Florida A & M University The lexicon in endangered languages: The case of Dongolawi Nubian Abstract. Lexical change and attrition is one of the main signs or symptoms of language endangerment that can eventually lead to structural changes. And although the phenomenon of language endangerment/death has received much attention in sociolinguistic studies, the changes in vocabulary associated with it has not been given the same attention. This paper examines the sociolinguistic situation of Dongolawi Nubian*, a language variety that belongs to the Eastern- Sudanic group of the Nilo-Saharan family which is spoken in the northern region of Sudan. More specifically, the paper analyses a sample of DN lexicon with the purpose of identifying the extent of semantic change, including lexical change, attrition, borrowing, and other additions. Analysis of data reflects extensive borrowing from Sudanese Arabic (SA), loss of items associated with traditional ways of life, some of which are replaced while others are not. The study indicates that, despite heavy borrowing, the basic structure of the language variety still remains intact, with no apparent major changes in syntax such as word order. Hence, it is argued that the DN situation is not hopelessly irreversible, and that the variety could still be revitalized as long as there is willingness, commitment, and collaboration of efforts and resources on the part of policy makers, speakers of the language variety, and other organizations concerned with language endangerment. A brief description of the Nobiin language and history By Nubantood Khalil, (Nubian Language Society) Nobiin language Nobiin (also called Mahas-Fadichcha) is a Nile-Nubian language (North Eastern Sudanic, Nilo-Saharan) descendent from Old Nubian, spoken along the Nile in northern Sudan and southern Egypt and by thousands of refugees in Europe and the US. Nobiin is classified as a member of the Nubian language family along with Kenzi/Dongolese in upper Nubia, Meidob in North Darfur, Birgid in Central and South Darfur, and the Hill Nubian languages in Southern Kordofan. The Nubian Family (Bechhaus 2011:15) Central Nubian Western Northern Nubian Nubian ▪ Nobiin ▪ Meidob ▪ Old Nubian Birgid Hill Nubians Kenzi/ Donglese In the 1960's, large numbers of Nobiin speakers were forcibly displaced away from their historical land by the Nile Rivers in both Egypt and Sudan due to the construction of the High Dam near Aswan. Prior to that forcible displacement, Nobiin was primarily spoken in the region between the first cataract of the Nile in southern Egypt, to Kerma, in the north of Sudan. The following map of southern Egypt and Sudan encompasses the areas in which Nobiin speakers have historically resided (from Thelwall & Schadeberg, 1983: 228). Nubia Nubia is the land of the ancient African civilization. It is located in southern Egypt along the Nile River banks and extends into the land that is known as “Sudan”. The region Nubia had experienced writing since a long time ago. During the ancient period of the Kingdoms of Kush, 1 | P a g e the Kushite/Nubians used the hieroglyphic writing system. -

The Role of Indigenous Languages in Southern Sudan: Educational Language Policy and Planning H. Wani Rondyang A thesis submitted to the Institute of Education, University of London, for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2007 Abstract This thesis aims to questions the language policy of Sudan's central government since independence in 1956. An investigation of the root causes of educational problems, which are seemingly linked to the current language policy, is examined throughout the thesis from Chapter 1 through 9. In specific terms, Chapter 1 foregrounds the discussion of the methods and methodology for this research purposely because the study is based, among other things, on the analysis of historical documents pertaining to events and processes of sociolinguistic significance for this study. The factors and sociolinguistic conditions behind the central government's Arabicisation policy which discourages multilingual development, relate the historical analysis in Chapter 3 to the actual language situation in the country described in Chapter 4. However, both chapters are viewed in the context of theoretical understanding of language situation within multilingualism in Chapter 2. The thesis argues that an accommodating language policy would accord a role for the indigenous Sudanese languages. By extension, it would encourage the development and promotion of those languages and cultures in an essentially linguistically and culturally diverse and multilingual country. Recommendations for such an alternative educational language policy are based on the historical and sociolinguistic findings in chapters 3 and 4 as well as in the subsequent discussions on language policy and planning proper in Chapters 5, where theoretical frameworks for examining such issues are explained, and Chapters 6 through 8, where Sudan's post-independence language policy is discussed. -

ISBN: 0-620-33647-1 Reviewed by: Ogunrinade, Adewale Olukayode For those familiar with African Church history, there is no gainsaying that the quest towards redefining African Christianity is a current and most prominent challenge facing church historians. The basis of this is renaming the brand of Christianity bequeathed on the continent by the various colonial masters and colonial missionary masters who came to reintroduce Christianity in Africa. This book through the efforts of the authors of its chapters attempts to present a non-parochial, impartial, and contextualized African Christianity. It recognizes the roles of both foreign missionaries and the native agents that lent their assistance to its definition. It further puts into consideration the culture of the Africans and assesses their feelings towards the “new religion” (Christianity) in Africa in its formative period. The authors who participate in this text are like harbingers of history for African Christianity in the 21st century as there had been many works written by 20th century scholars such as Adrian Hasting, Mark Shaw, and Bengt Sundkler which these writers make reference to. They attempt to identify the key subject matters in African Christianity, which other researches in the new millennium could refer to. The first chapter traces trends and issues in African Church history, the misjudgment, marginalization, and misrepresentations exhibited by the Western Missionaries about Africa, with Africans in relation to knowing God on the soil of Africa, when they came with the Christian gospel. -

A little later Bishop Edward Steere in Zanzibar translated into Swahili and published the New Testament and in 1891 the entire Bible. The pioneering linguistics of early missionaries, Ludwig Krapf, Bishop Steere and Father Sacleux set a high standard for a succession of Swahili experts and Steere’s Swahili Bible provided a basis for Biblical translations into other East African vernaculars. The first modem missionary who pioneered missionary work in East and Central Africa was Johann Ludwig Krapf, a German Lutheran from Württem berg, educated in Basel, who arrived in East Africa on 7 January 1844 in the service of the Anglican Church Missionary Society.1 Krapf joined the CMS to participate in new Protestant mission initiatives in Christian Ethiopia2 and he started his missionary career in the Tigré province in 1837. Unable to work there, he went instead to the Shoa kingdom where in 1839 he and his co-work ers were warmly received by the king, Sahle Selassie, only to be expelled in 1842 for political reasons. -

Gomez Excerpt More information Introduction The dawn of the twenty-first century finds persons of varying ethnic and racial and religious backgrounds living together in societies all over the globe. The United Kingdom and France in Europe, together with the United States and Brazil in the Americas, are perhaps only the better known of many such societies, a principal dynamic of which concerns how groups maintain their identities while forming new and viable communities with those who do not share their backgrounds or beliefs. To achieve the latter requires a willingness on the part of all to learn about the histories and cultures of everyone in the society. This book is about people of African descent who found (and find) themselves living either outside of the African continent or in parts of Africa that were territorially quite distant from their lands of birth. It is a history of their experiences, contributions, victories, and struggles, and it is primarily concerned with massive movements and extensive relocations, over long periods of time, resulting in the dispersal of Africans and their descendants throughout much of the world. This phenomenon is referred to as the African Diaspora. Redistributions of European and Asian populations have also marked history, but the African Diaspora is unique in its formation. It is a story, or a collection of stories, like no other. As an undergraduate text, this book is written at a time of con- siderable perplexity, ambiguity, and seeming contradiction. People of African descent, or black people, can be found in all walks of life. -

Cairo‘s Tahrir Square and the Kasr Dobara Evangelical Church (KDEC) continued to be the principle focal points up to and including the June 30 uprising some three years later. During this period of massive change in the history of Egypt, the Coptic church realized the need for political action in the face of persecution, and Kasr Dobara Evangelical Church was a focal example of leadership and service in this new Christian activism. For the first time in the history of Christianity in Egypt, Christians ventured out of the sanctuary of their churches to protest against the traditional oppression of government. The theological understanding and leadership provided by the pastors, leaders, and members of KDEC encouraged significant change, including a new rapprochement between
