90 (2) · August 2018 pp. 57–70 Faunistics of oribatid mites (Acari, Oribatida) in dry grassland sites in the Eisack Valley (South Tyrol, Prov. Bolzano, Italy) Heinrich Schatz c/o Institute of Zoology, University of Innsbruck, Technikerstr. 25, 6020 Innsbruck, Austria E-mail: [email protected] Received 15 July 2018 | Accepted 21 July 2018 Published online at www.soil-organisms.de 1 August 2018 | Printed version 15 August 2018 DOI 10.25674/8vad-hw64 Abstract Oribatid mites were investigated in five dry grassland sites in the basin around Klausen / Chiusa (South Tyrol). Soil and litter samples were taken from characteristic microhabitats (dry grassland, dry bushland, rocky steppe). A total of 150 oribatid species belonging to 47 families were encountered, most of them closely associated with dry habitats. Gymnodamaeus irregularis Bayar- togtokh & Schatz, 2009 and Liochthonius perelegans Moritz, 1976 are new records for Italy, additional six species are new records for South Tyrol. Two species (Licneremaeus sp., Pseudoppia sp.) could not be identified at species level, possibly they are unde- scribed species. Remarkable species are presented, and their general distribution and habitat requirements pointed out. The possible origin of the oribatid mite species in dry grasslands is discussed, as inferred from the high proportion of ‘mediterranean species’ with distribution centre in South or Southeast Europe. The species assemblages of the different sites and habitats are compared. Keywords Alps | species assemblages | distribution | ecology 1. Introduction The Eisack valley / Valle Isarco around Klausen / Chiusa is favoured by a warm climate and some well- Dry grasslands are unfertilized plant communities in preserved dry grasslands still exist in this area.

Entdecke mit mir das Eisacktal Scopri con me la Valle Isarco Let’s explore the Eisacktal Valley 2 Pfeifer Huisele Sobald Pfeifer Huisele auftaucht, herrscht Aufregung. 3 Talking about the Pfeifer Huisele causes excitement. As a wizard this fi gure was able to turn into any imaginable character, no matter if elephant or fl y. He was feared by people and was called warlock. He was responsible for storms and other disasters until the devil put an end to it. In the past the Pfeiff er Huisele was making trouble but nowadays he is the one to lead you through the Eisack- tal valley.

North Sea], or from E. toW. as [North Sea . w. Adriatic]. The Basic Watershed, which also answers to the title [Po ~ w. Rhine], is short arid for purposes of practical convenience scarcely requires subdivision, but the distinction between the Aar basin (actually Reuss, and Limmat) and that of the Rhine itself, is of too great significance to be overlooked, to say nothing of the magnitude and importance of the Major Branch System involved. This gives two Basic Sections of very unequal dimensions, but the ., Alps being of natural origin cannot be expected to fall into more or less equal com partments. Two rather less unbalanced sections could be obtained by differentiating Ticino.- and Adda-drainage on the Po-side, but this would exhibit both hydrographic and Alpine inferiority. Gerald Steinacher* Fascist Legacies:1 Th e Controversy over Mussolini’s Monuments in South Tyrol2 Th e northern Italian town of Bolzano (Bozen in German) in the western Dolomites is known for breathtaking natural landscapes as well as for its medieval city centre, gothic cathedral, and world-famous mummy, Ötzi the Iceman, which is on dis- play at the local archaeological museum. At the same time, Bolzano’s more recent history casts a shadow over the town. Th e legacy of fascism looms large in the form of Ventennio fascista-era monuments such as the Victory Monument, a mas- sive triumphal arch commissioned by the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini and located in Bolzano’s Victory Square, and the Mussolini relief on the façade of the former Fascist Party headquarters (now a tax offi ce) at Courthouse Square, which depicts il duce riding a horse with his arm raised high in the Fascist salute.

  • Your Base Camp Let Me Introduce You to My Town: BOLZANO – BOZEN
! ! ! Your Base Camp Let me introduce you to my town: BOLZANO – BOZEN. ” The entrance door of the Dolomites!” Before and after your trek, via ferrata tour, or climbing experience in the Dolomites, you will pass through Bolzano. It is the central town of the Dolomites region, and the place where I was born and my family has lived for the last 100 years (probably more). Bolzano is not only your "best base camp" in the Dolomites, it is also an amazing and important historical town on its own. You can spend some days in Bolzano to rest or visit the cultural attractions with a nice regional focus. Consider some of these unique ideas … I’ve marked “11” points of interest on the map of “old town” Bolzano in the next page, our historic town center, watch it, are good ideas to discover my town! _____________________________________________________________________________________________ "Dolomites mountains are a natural site on UNESCO's World Heritage List!" 1 ! ! ! SUGGESTION 1: Cultural day - bicycle to two castles and tour them. In one day it is possible to visit two important castles by bicycle! Here is the plan (see map on next page): - 07.00 hrs. • Ice Under the Eisack CONTRACT VALUE: € 303 Million the Billion-Euro Brenner Base Tunnel Project Is Making Progress
40 Projects International + Special Divisions www.strabag.com Projects International + Special Divisions teams. No. 1 /2017 41 BRENNER BASE TUNNEL Ice under the Eisack CONTRACT VALUE: € 303 million The billion-euro Brenner Base Tunnel project is making progress. CONSTRUCTION PERIOD: November 2014 – December 2022 In October 2014, STRABAG – as part of a bidding consortium – was SHARE IN CONSORTIUM: awarded the contract to build the Eisack river undercrossing. The 39 % first two phases of construction are already complete. CONSTRUCTION PHASES: 3 crossing of the river Eisack will be very difficult as we have a very low rock cover here and the construction of the tunnel must not alter the flow of the river.” The BBT runs quite shallow beneath the surface here. The ground conditions are complex and groundwater is an issue. “For this reason, we are using two special procedures,” In the foreground is the Telepass station built by Mörtl explains. “The first is ground freezing beneath the us along with the access river Eisack using liquid nitrogen to freeze the substrate to the A22 motorway. The silos in the background are so that we can safely bore through it. The second is jet used to produce concrete grouting, which involves injecting a cement/water mixture in part from the aggregate won from the tunnelling under high pressure through a borehole into the substrate works. to solidify the ground.” To determine the geological reaction to these procedures, and to prove their suitability to the client, several tests and trial bores were made over an 18-month planning phase on site.
