2. the Communications Sector in Italy
2. The communications sector in Italy 2. The communications sector in Italy 2.1. Telecommunications In a picture of progressive deterioration of the macroeconomic situation, the trend of contraction of the telecommunications market, on both fixed and mobile network, already observed for some years, was confirmed in 2011. In this context, the elements which best qualify the Italian telecommunications market, show no substantial change in 2011 compared to the last two years. These elements can be summed up as follows: i) the expenditure of families and companies in telecommunications services continues to fall, with a slight acceleration compared to 2010; ii) the reduction in the prices of telecommunications services to both private and business customers, on both fixed and mobile networks, is constant; iii) the contraction in voice calls on dial-up network continues, with a reduction of 11.7% in the number of minutes consumed, while voice traffic from the mobile network has increased by another 10% in the last year; iv) the spread of broadband services on fixed and mobile network has produced further growth in income deriving from data services; v) there is still growth, but with indications of the saturation of the relative market, in the virtual mobile telephony compartment; vi) with regard to the competitive situation, the erosion of Telecom Italia's total market share continues; vii) in last autumn, an auction was held for the assigning of the usage rights of the frequencies in the 800, 1,800, 2,000 and 2,600 MHz bands, which led to a total commitment of the mobile operators for € 3.9 billion; viii) on the other hand, the reduction in investments in infrastructures is confirmed;9 ix) The gross profit of the sector is substantially stable, also thanks to the continuous restructuring and cost containment actions carried out by the telecommunications companies. -

90 (2) · August 2018 pp. 57–70 Faunistics of oribatid mites (Acari, Oribatida) in dry grassland sites in the Eisack Valley (South Tyrol, Prov. Bolzano, Italy) Heinrich Schatz c/o Institute of Zoology, University of Innsbruck, Technikerstr. 25, 6020 Innsbruck, Austria E-mail: [email protected] Received 15 July 2018 | Accepted 21 July 2018 Published online at www.soil-organisms.de 1 August 2018 | Printed version 15 August 2018 DOI 10.25674/8vad-hw64 Abstract Oribatid mites were investigated in five dry grassland sites in the basin around Klausen / Chiusa (South Tyrol). Soil and litter samples were taken from characteristic microhabitats (dry grassland, dry bushland, rocky steppe). A total of 150 oribatid species belonging to 47 families were encountered, most of them closely associated with dry habitats. Gymnodamaeus irregularis Bayar- togtokh & Schatz, 2009 and Liochthonius perelegans Moritz, 1976 are new records for Italy, additional six species are new records for South Tyrol. Two species (Licneremaeus sp., Pseudoppia sp.) could not be identified at species level, possibly they are unde- scribed species. Remarkable species are presented, and their general distribution and habitat requirements pointed out. The possible origin of the oribatid mite species in dry grasslands is discussed, as inferred from the high proportion of ‘mediterranean species’ with distribution centre in South or Southeast Europe. The species assemblages of the different sites and habitats are compared. Keywords Alps | species assemblages | distribution | ecology 1. Introduction The Eisack valley / Valle Isarco around Klausen / Chiusa is favoured by a warm climate and some well- Dry grasslands are unfertilized plant communities in preserved dry grasslands still exist in this area. -

Italy in Ivan Meštrović’s and Bogdan Radica’s discourses between the two World Wars di Maciej Czerwiński In this article the activity and discourses of two Dalmatian public figures are taken into consideration: the sculptor Ivan Meštrović and the journalist Bogdan Radica. They both had an enormous influence on how the image of Italy was created and disseminated in Yugoslavia, in particular in the 1920s and 1930s. The analysis of their discourses is interpreted in terms of the concept of Dalmatia within a wider Mediterranean basin which also refers to two diverse conceptualizations of Yugoslavism, cultural and politi- cal. Meštrović’s vision of Dalmatia/Croatia/Yugoslavia was based on his rural hinterland idiom enabling him to embrace racial and cultural Yugoslavism. In contrast, Radica, in spite of having a pro-Yugoslav orientation during the same period, did not believe in race, so for him the idea of Croat-Serb unity was more a political issue (to a lesser extent a cultural one). Keywords: Dalmatia, Yugoslav-Italian relationships, Croatianness, Yugoslavism, Bor- derlands Parole chiave: Dalmazia, Relazioni Jugoslavia-Italia, Croaticità, Jugoslavismo, Aree di confine Introduction This article takes into consideration the activity and discourses of the sculptor Ivan Meštrović and the journalist Bogdan Radica1. The choice of these two figures from Dalmatia, though very different in terms of their profession and political status in the interwar Yugoslav state (1918-41), has an important justification. Not only they both were influenced by Italian culture and heritage (displaying the typical Dalmatian ambivalence towards politics), but they also evaluated Italian heritage and politics in the Croatian/Yugoslav public sphere. -

Stewart2019.Pdf
Political Change and Scottish Nationalism in Dundee 1973-2012 Thomas A W Stewart PhD Thesis University of Edinburgh 2019 Abstract Prior to the 2014 independence referendum, the Scottish National Party’s strongest bastions of support were in rural areas. The sole exception was Dundee, where it has consistently enjoyed levels of support well ahead of the national average, first replacing the Conservatives as the city’s second party in the 1970s before overcoming Labour to become its leading force in the 2000s. Through this period it achieved Westminster representation between 1974 and 1987, and again since 2005, and had won both of its Scottish Parliamentary seats by 2007. This performance has been completely unmatched in any of the country’s other cities. Using a mixture of archival research, oral history interviews, the local press and memoires, this thesis seeks to explain the party’s record of success in Dundee. It will assess the extent to which the character of the city itself, its economy, demography, geography, history, and local media landscape, made Dundee especially prone to Nationalist politics. It will then address the more fundamental importance of the interaction of local political forces that were independent of the city’s nature through an examination of the ability of party machines, key individuals and political strategies to shape the city’s electoral landscape. The local SNP and its main rival throughout the period, the Labour Party, will be analysed in particular detail. The thesis will also take time to delve into the histories of the Conservatives, Liberals and Radical Left within the city and their influence on the fortunes of the SNP. -
