Cowles* B ECAUSE of the mobility of troops in the present war and the practice of transferring troops from one front to another, it may well be that units of Gestapo, SS, or other German organizations, which have been charged with committing some of the worst war crimes, may have been moved from one front to another, perhaps as "flying squad- rons". It may also be a fact that many, even hundreds of, members of such groups have now been captured and are prisoners of war in Great Britain or the United States. Such prisoners held by Great Britain may have committed atrocities against Yugoslavs in Yugo- slavia or Greeks in Greece. German prisoners in the custody of the United States may have committed atrocities against Poles in Poland before the United States became a belligerent. Furthermore, for rea- sons not obvious, but none the less real, it may be that some countries will not wish to punish certain war criminals or that they would prefer that some such individuals be punished by other States. Again, the custodian State may wish to punish an offender itself rather than turn him over to another government even though a request for rendition has been made. Because of notions of territorial jurisdiction, it is thought by some persons that, although a State may punish war criminals for offenses committed against its own armed forces during the military opera- tions, it may not punish an offender when the victim of a criminal act was not a member of its forces, if the crime was committed in a place over which, at the time of the act, the punishing State did not have *Lt.

Dozens are injured but none seriously.     INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE OF THE RED CROSS ICRC President in Italy... The President of the ICRC, Mr. Alexandre Hay, was in Italy from 15 to 20 June for an official visit. He was accompanied by Mr. Sergio Nessi, head of the Financing Division, and Mr. Melchior Borsinger, delegate-general for Europe and North America. The purpose of the visit was to contact the Italian authorities, to give them a detailed account of the ICRC role and function and to obtain greater moral and material support from them. The first day of the visit was mainly devoted to discussions with the leaders of the National Red Cross Society and a tour of the Society's principal installations. On the same day Mr. Hay was received by the President of the Republic, Mr. Sandro Pertini. Other discussions with government officials enabled the ICRC delegation to explain all aspects of current ICRC activities throughout the world. Mr. Hay's interlocutors were Mr. Filippo Maria Pandolfi, Minister of Finance; Mr. Aldo Aniasi, Minister of Health; Mrs. Nilde Iotti, Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies; Mr. Amintore Fanfani, President of the Senate; Mr. Paulo Emilio Taviani, Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies' Foreign Affairs Commission and Mr. Giulio Andreotti, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Affairs Commission. Discussions were held also with the leaders of the Italian main political parties. On 20 June President Hay, Mr. Nessi and Mr. Borsinger were received in audience by H.H. Pope John-Paul II, after conferring with H.E. Cardinal Casaroli, the Vatican Secretary of State, and H.E. Cardinal Gantin, Chairman of the "Cor Unum" Pontifical Council and of the pontifical Justice and Peace Commission.

Rambling in Overdrive: Travelling Through Tasmanian Literature CA Cranston Two years ago I published an anthology of original and published writings about Tasmania titled Along these lines: From Trowenna to Tasmania1 — a mistake it turns out (as far as the title goes) as readers generally assume that Trowenna is some other place, rather than some other time. The idea was to situate various texts about Tasmania into context, so that when traveling the arterial highways of the heart- shaped island one was presented with stories and histories (time) that live on the sides of the road (place). This paper will address the theme of the conference (‘Originally Tasmanian. Creativity and Innovation in the Island State’) with a methodology similar to that ‘driving’ the anthology. It will examine the relationship between context (the origin) and text (the representation), and by implication, the relationship between natural and symbolic worlds. The ramble, which textually refers to the discursive — ideas, like automobiles, that ‘run about’ — will be accommodated, and as such will occasionally disrupt normal expectations of chronology, the historian’s purview. The motivation for the anthology came out of a need to experience at first hand niggling doubts about the textual construction of the island. I was a migrant so (in terms of the conference theme) I’m not ‘Originally Tasmanian’. I was living in a biotic community I knew nothing about and for which I had no language. I was presented with a textual culture I knew little about, and I was hungry for island stories.

Come annunciato anche il nostro Portale offre ampia visibilità alla manifestazione con aneddoti, curiosità e con immagini originali o restaurate da Oreste Grana e Camillo Murelli. Oggi parliamo del Cappello Alpino rielaborando testi tratti da ‘Centomila gavette di ghiaccio’ di G. Bedeschi e da altre fonti. IL NOSTRO CAPPELLO ALPINO L’elemento più rappresentativo degli alpini è senza ombra di dubbio il cappello. È formato da molti elementi che rappresentano il grado, il reggimento, il battaglione, e la specialità di appartenenza. Nel 1873 gli alpini per differenziarsi dal chepì usato dai fanti, adottarono un proprio cappello di feltro nero a forma tronco conica a falda larga; sulla fronte aveva come fregio una stella a cinque punte metallica bianca, con inciso il numero della compagnia. Sul lato sinistro, vi era una coccarda tricolore con, al centro un bottoncino bianco con croce scanalata. Un rosso gallone a V rovesciata decorava il cappello sullo stesso lato della coccarda e sotto questa era infilata una penna nera di corvo. Gli ufficiali portavano lo stesso cappello, ma la penna era d’aquila. Nel 1880 la stella a cinque punte venne sostituita da un fregio metallico bianco: un’aquila che sormontava una cornetta contenente il numero di battaglione. La cornetta si trovava sopra un trofeo di fucili incrociati con baionetta innestata, una piccozza e una scure circondati da una corona di foglie di alloro e quercia.

It seemed to me a simple and sensible way of saying that the reader of these pages must not look for many jokes, certainly not merely for jokes, because these are controversial essays, covering all subjects on which a controversialist is challenged, and not particular subjects chosen as they are chosen by an essayist. It is an awful revelation of the world of unreason into which we have wandered, that people more practical than I are convinced that if I say that this is apart from joking, everyone will think it is a joke.

    ALESSANDRO ALLEMANO IL FONDO BIBLIOGRAFICO “GENERALE LUIGI MONDINI” DEL COMUNE DI GRAZZANO BADOGLIO CATALOGO DELLE SEZIONI RISORGIMENTO - STORIA SICILIANA RIVISTE Comune di Grazzano Badoglio 2011 2 PREMESSA Esce, in occasione delle celebrazioni del 150° anniversario dell’Unità d’Italia, la prima parte del catalogo del fondo bibliografico del Generale di Corpo d’armata Luigi Mondini, donato al Comune di Grazzano Badoglio nel 1988. Tenuto conto della personalità dell’alto Ufficiale e degli incarichi da Lui disimpegnati nel corso di una lunga carriera, oltre che in segno di rispetto alla Sua memoria e alla gentilezza dimostrata dai Suoi congiunti, la catalogazione di questa raccolta era doverosa, oltre che intellettualmente stimolante. La struttura di questo lavoro si discosta alquanto dai comuni cataloghi bibliografici compilati secondo le normative correnti: è più un inventario d’archivio che un’arida collezione di schede catalografiche. In particolare ho ritenuto importante segnalare le dediche autografe, le annotazioni personali e i numerosi inserti di lettere, ritagli di giornali, frammenti di appunti presenti in parecchi dei libri del fondo. In tal modo è stato possibile ricostruire le modalità di formazione di questa biblioteca, comprendere gli interessi del Generale e delineare una vasta rete di amicizie con un gran numero di studiosi, caratterizzate tutte dal comune amore per la Storia. Un ricco indice permette l’agevole reperimento delle schede in riferimento sia al soggetto che ai nomi di persona. La realizzazione di questo primo catalogo, cui seguiranno nel tempo anche quelli relativi alle altre sezioni, è stata possibile in primo luogo grazie all’entusiasmo e all’intraprendenza di Rosaria Lunghi, Sindaco di Grazzano Badoglio, che ha incentrato le locali manifestazioni di “Italia 150” proprio sulla conservazione e valorizzazione del fondo Mondini, promuovendo l’iniziativa dal titolo “Leggere il Risorgimento e la storia d’Italia”.

Fabio Minazzi Nota Data di acquisizione e consistenza numerica della biblioteca La biblioteca è stata acquisita nell’aprile del 2015 per donazione degli eredi dell’avvocato milanese Guido Bersellini. Nel mese di settembre dello stesso anno un’ulteriore acquisizione di volumi ha arricchito la dotazione. I volumi sono in totale n. 2997 e collocati al II piano del Collegio Carlo Cattaneo, sede del Centro Insubrico Cattaneo-Preti, Via Dunant 5, Varese, Campus Universitario di Bizzozero, tel. 0332218751. I volumi sono catalogati per autore in ordine alfabetico e distribuiti in 11 sezioni in base al contenuto (vedere sotto), cui va aggiunto (n.12), l’Archivio; l’Archivio è, alla data attuale (gennaio 2018), in fase di analisi e studio. Nella catalogazione di un dato volume non c’è indicazione della collana eccetto che per i volumi appartenenti a collane o serie speciali collocate a parte. Le collane non s’intendono complete. Alla catalogazione hanno collaborato studenti del Liceo Statale “A. Manzoni”, (Varese), del Liceo “E. Stein”, Gavirate (Varese), dell’Istituto Superiore “Casula” (Varese) nel quadro dell’attività alternanza scuola-lavoro prevista per legge. I volumi spesso contengono al loro interno ritagli di articoli, generalmente di firme illustri, o singole pagine di quotidiani, di cui si fornisce indicazione nella catalogazione di ciascun volume, va tenuto presente che tale spoglio non è però ancora terminato.

Celâl Şengör* İTÜ Avrasya Yerbilimleri Enstitüsü ve Maden Fakültesi, Jeoloji Bölümü, Ayazağa 34469 İstanbul, Turkey ABSTRACT A recent fad in the historiography of geology is to consider the Scottish polymath James Hutton’s Theory of the Earth the last of the “theories of the earth” genre of publications that had begun developing in the seventeenth century and to regard it as something behind the times already in the late eighteenth century and which was subsequently remembered only because some later geologists, particularly Hutton’s countryman Sir Archibald Geikie, found it convenient to represent it as a precursor of the prevailing opinions of the day. By contrast, the available documentation, pub- lished and unpublished, shows that Hutton’s theory was considered as something completely new by his contemporaries, very different from anything that preceded it, whether they agreed with him or not, and that it was widely discussed both in his own country and abroad—from St. Petersburg through Europe to New York. By the end of the third decade in the nineteenth century, many very respectable geologists began seeing in him “the father of modern geology” even before Sir Archibald was born (in 1835). Before long, even popular books on geology and general encyclopedias began spreading the same conviction. A review of the geological literature of the late eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries shows that Hutton was not only remembered, but his ideas were in fact considered part of the current science and discussed accord- ingly.
