Bach The examination of organizational members' ideological identification and feminist praxes, and the emotional culture of a feminist organization was considered. Feminist ideology was found to be unrepresentative of any known feminisms (e.g. liberal, revisionist) but rather was oriented toward a folk feminist ideology that was directed at generally improving women's lives. Feminist praxis (the process of moving from feminist values into actions based on those values) at the organization occurred through choice, education, and empowerment. An ethic of care of this organization was found to have internal and external dimensions. Internally among staff, there was a lack of an ethic of care. Externally, there was an extensive ethic of care directed at clients. An ethnography of speaking was used as the methodology for this study in order to uncover the intricacies of this feminist organization. Ethnography of speaking is useful for the generation of new theory and the testing of existing theory in regard to feminist organizations and the emotional culture within these organizations. Importantly, an ethnography of speaking allows for a relationship of trust through which the details of the organization may be uncovered. "Do you remember our HIV girl?" Emily asks. "Yes...." responds Sandy. "She just called, she thinks she's pregnant...." there's a brief moment of silence. "Does she know about how to protect herself?" Sandy asks Emily. "Yea, we went all over that when she was here last." "shit..." Emily asks, "I'm scheduled to leave on my vacation tomorrow, and she has an appointment in the morning.... can you be here to help her with the pregnancy test?" "Yea, I'm scheduled to be here, I'll be here..." Sandy responds. Emily is relieved, "Thanks, I'll leave all the information I have written up in your box." "Allright." Emily leaves. Later it is found out that this "HIV girl" was sexually attacked -- raped -- and that she might have HIV (the test from the lab has not been returned so they are not sure). Now the employees find out she is sexually active, may not have been using contraception, and may be pregnant. The person relating this story to me asks me if I am doing okay. I say "yea" and notice that my body is wound up, tense. My legs are crossed at the knees and feel like they somehow managed to tie themselves into a knot. A few minutes later, Emily returns. She speaks from the edge of the door, "I just wanted to come in and tell you that I will be here in the morning. I called my partner, and he said he would be willing to leave a little bit later so that I can be here for the test." 1 2 The administrator replies, "Thanks for letting me know. I'll be here if you need me." It's an average day at Western Health Clinic (WH). The clinic is full of emotion, with little free time and many interruptions. Schedules need to be ironed out, and dire and desperate events demand attention. Conversations are non-judgmental and focused around sexuality, responsibility, confidentiality, care, and openness. Clinic employees are concerned with issues such as sexual assault, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), HIV and AIDS, contraception, pregnancy (both unplanned and planned), abortions, and sexual education. At the same time, there is a concern for the client and for other employees. This caring is even extended to the researcher. By examining aspects of this clinic's culture there may be an increase in understanding the organizing practices and underlying rationales for why WH and similar organizations exist; and how feminist ideology and praxis, and the expression of emotion are inherent factors of these organizational cultures. In this study the communication culture of an organization that offers education and services for reproductive health, family planning, and abortion in the Western United States will be discussed.     Women's Experimental Autobiography from Counterculture Comics to Transmedia Storytelling: Staging Encounters Across Time, Space, and Medium Dissertation Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Ohio State University Alexandra Mary Jenkins, M.A. Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2014 Dissertation Committee: Jared Gardner, Advisor Sean O’Sullivan Robyn Warhol Copyright by Alexandra Mary Jenkins 2014 Abstract Feminist activism in the United States and Europe during the 1960s and 1970s harnessed radical social thought and used innovative expressive forms in order to disrupt the “grand perspective” espoused by men in every field (Adorno 206). Feminist student activists often put their own female bodies on display to disrupt the disembodied “objective” thinking that still seemed to dominate the academy. The philosopher Theodor Adorno responded to one such action, the “bared breasts incident,” carried out by his radical students in Germany in 1969, in an essay, “Marginalia to Theory and Praxis.” In that essay, he defends himself against the students’ claim that he proved his lack of relevance to contemporary students when he failed to respond to the spectacle of their liberated bodies. He acknowledged that the protest movements seemed to offer thoughtful people a way “out of their self-isolation,” but ultimately, to replace philosophy with bodily spectacle would mean to miss the “infinitely progressive aspect of the separation of theory and praxis” (259, 266). Lisa Yun Lee argues that this separation continues to animate contemporary feminist debates, and that it is worth returning to Adorno’s reasoning, if we wish to understand women’s particular modes of theoretical ii insight in conversation with “grand perspectives” on cultural theory in the twenty-first century.

Dubinsky Kelly Belanger Malea Powell June 27, 2014 Blacksburg, VA Keywords: rhetoric, comics, feminism, decolonial, composition Copyright 2014 From Inclusion to Transformation: Decolonial Feminist Comix Methodology (With Handy Illustrations) Frances Amelia Howes ABSTRACT Feminist rhetorics need to move us from inclusion to transformation: instead of “including” more and more marginalized groups into the scholarly status quo, or “including” comics into methods of analysis that we already use, we need to transform our practices themselves. Seeing comics research as an expedition into comics doesn't work. The spatial metaphor is failing because it's analogous to a takeover in the colonial sense. I center the both/and experience of being a producer of comics and analyst of them. Drawing from a critical reading of my own comic, I describe “the disobedient how,” a way of learning from transgressive models. I argue that instead of “collecting” comics, decolonial feminist methodology asks that we “attend” comics through listening, experiencing, and having a relationship with them and their creators. As Shawn Wilson's work suggests, knowledge lies in relationships. I use this concept to guide an analysis of Lynda Barry’s recent comics work as well as her comments during a panel at the Comics: Philosophy and Practice conference. In order for academics to have true knowledge about Barry’s work, we must have a right relationship to her and to it, which requires decolonizing our relationship to texts and taking Barry’s comics seriously as sources of theory.

Goings ABSTRACT This project uses the history of the National Organization for Women (NOW) to explore the relationship of liberal and radical elements in the second wave of the U.S. women’s movement. Combining oral histories with archival documents, this project offers a new perspective on second-wave feminism as a part of the long decade of the 1960s. It also makes location a salient factor in understanding post– World War II struggles for social justice. Unlike other scholarship on second-wave feminism, this study explores NOW in three diverse locations—Memphis, Columbus, and San Francisco—to see what feminists were doing in different kinds of communities: a Southern city, a non-coastal Northern community, and a West Coast progressive location. In Memphis—a city with a strong history of civil rights activism—black-white racial dynamics, a lack of toleration for same-sex sexuality, and political conservatism shaped feminist activism. Columbus, like Memphis, had a dominant white population and relatively conservative political climate (although less so than in Memphis), but it also boasted an open lesbian community, strong university presence, and a history of radical feminism and labor activism.

Drawing from her radically deployment of self-reflexivity. Born under the interdisciplinary, trans-media, site-specific big skies of Saskatchewan and raised in scofflaw artistic practice, she reflects on her early Alberta, Crowe left the prairies to deepen her witchy experiences at the feminist bookstore engagements with art and feminism, and to do in Edmonton to reimagine a generative and graduate studies at the Ontario Institute for radical feminist space that might provide a Studies in Education, University of Toronto. A home for feminist cultural productions. Crowe return to the prairies inspired art and writing mixes a magical concoction: one part Deleuze centered on queer feminist reclamation practices and Guattari’s notions of deterritorialization to ask questions about the land, whiteness and and reterritorialization brought into relationship queer settler identities and explore possibilities with LaDuke’s deep understanding of right for regeneration. Recent work includes the relationship to the land; one part queer futurity queer Western, Quivering Land (ARP), a gritty by Muñoz; with one part Spivak’s passion for feminist meditation on the possibilities of art to making the imagination a material practice.

The store closed in 1997 due to financial problems, but it was the last remaining non-profit feminist bookstore run by an all-volunteer collective in Canada. From the beginning, the collective pursued its vision to create a comfortable, safe space for women to access vital information that was hard to find anywhere else. Though creating and maintaining the bookstore was a thoroughly feminist endeavour, the bookstore itself was not a centre of political activity in the community. Its animus was to provide the literature that would raise women’s consciousness, impel their identity formation, foster bold, independent thinking and jolt women into political action.
