Feminist Periodicals: A Current Listing of Contents is published by the Office of the University of Wisconsin System Women's Studies Librarian on a quarterly basis with the intent of increasing public awareness of feminist periodicals. It is our hope that Feminist Periodicals will serve several purposes: to keep the reader abreast of current topics in feminist literature; to increase readers' familiarity with a wide spectrum of feminist periodicals; and to provide the requisite bibliographic information should a reader wish to subscribe to a journal or to obtain a particular article at her library or through interlibrary loan. (Users will need to be aware of the limitations of the new copyright law with regard to photocopying of copyrighted materials.) Table of contents pages from current issues of majorfeminist journals are reproduced in each issue ofFeminist Periodicals, preceded by a comprehensive annotated listing of all journals we have selected. As publication schedules vary enormously, not every periodical will have table of contents pages reproduced in each issue of FP. The annotated listing provides the following information on each journal: 1. Year of first pUblication. 2. Frequency of publication. 3. U.S. subscription price(s). 4. SUbscription address. 5. Current editor. 6. Editorial address (if different from sUbscription address). 7. International Standard Serials Number (ISSN). 8. Library of Congress (LC) catalog card number. g. OCLC, Inc. Control Number. 10. Locations where the journal is held in the UW System. 11. Publications in which the journal is indexed. 12. Subject focuststatement of purpose of the journal. Please note that in the actual text, only the numbers 1 to 12 are used to identify the different categories of information. ii. Our goal is to have represented in FP all English-language feminist periodicals with a substantial national or regional readership, with an emphasis on scholarly journals and small press offerings. We do not include pUblications which, though feminist in philosophy, do not focus solely on women's issues. Nor, with few exceptions, dowe include newsstand magazines. We are also forced to omit periodicals which lack a complete table of contents. We encourage feminist serials to build a full table of contents into their regular format to facilitate the indexing feminist literature sorely needs. Interested readers will find more complete information on feminist periodicals in The Index/Directory of Women's Media published annually by the Women's Institute for Freedom of the Press (3306 Ross Place, NW, Washington, DC 20008); and in Women's Periodicals andNewspapers:A Union ListoftheHoldings ofMadison Area Libraries, edited by James P.     Agnes Macready and Bella Guerin

    Agnes Macready Born in 1855 at Rathfriland, County Down, Agnes Macready was the eldest of five children of Presbyterian minister, Reverend Henry Macready, and his wife Jane. In 1867, when Agnes was 12, the family emigrated to Australia. As an adult, Agnes converted to Catholicism, a move described by the Methodist newspaper in these terms: ‘[S]he wandered from green pastures of truth into the enchanted ground of Popery, and is ardent as perverts usually are’. A manifestation of her alleged perverted ardour for popery was her contribution from 1898 of literary sketches and verse to the Sydney Irish-Catholic newspaper the Catholic Press for whom she wrote under the name ‘Arrah Luen’. In 1880 Agnes had commenced training as a nurse at Sydney’s Prince Alfred Hospital, after which she worked at Melbourne Hospital before being appointed matron of Bowral Hospital in New South Wales. When war broke out in South Africa in 1899 Macready volunteered to serve as a nurse. But her request was denied. Undeterred, she paid her own passage to Durban and was the first nurse from Australia to arrive there. But not only was she the first Australian nurse at the Boer War, she also became Australia’s first-ever female war correspondent. Having been commissioned by the Catholic Press to send back reports on the war, she wrote that she saw the war ‘with a woman’s eyes’. Women war correspondents would later challenge the idea that they should cover war only from the so-called ‘woman’s angle’. But, unlike her male counterparts, Agnes was not permitted to visit the front.

    Spring 2020 67 BLUEPRINT FOR A FEMINIST BOOKSTORE Errol “E.R” Anderson, Charis Circle Executive Director TBooks and More is how homey the space feels, how “safe.” It is, in part, this feeling of warmth, of respite in an increasingly fractured world, that has kept customers and program attend- ees returning to Charis for more than forty-four years. I cannot write about Charis in an objective way because Charis raised me and made me so much of the person I am today. I came to Charis through the young women’s writer’s program run by Charis co- founder Linda Bryant in 1998 and have grown up within the walls of 1189 Euclid Ave., honing my politics and my writing, making - ris Circle. Because we have survived when many other feminist and independent bookstores have not, people want to know how we do it. As I write this in March of 2019, Charis is preparing to embark on a once in a lifetime move to begin a partnership with independent, feminist bookstore, Charis Books and More and and add Charis at Agnes Scott College, a school store serving the needs of the Agnes Scott College Community.     Women's Experimental Autobiography from Counterculture Comics to Transmedia Storytelling: Staging Encounters Across Time, Space, and Medium Dissertation Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Ohio State University Alexandra Mary Jenkins, M.A. Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2014 Dissertation Committee: Jared Gardner, Advisor Sean O’Sullivan Robyn Warhol Copyright by Alexandra Mary Jenkins 2014 Abstract Feminist activism in the United States and Europe during the 1960s and 1970s harnessed radical social thought and used innovative expressive forms in order to disrupt the “grand perspective” espoused by men in every field (Adorno 206). Feminist student activists often put their own female bodies on display to disrupt the disembodied “objective” thinking that still seemed to dominate the academy. The philosopher Theodor Adorno responded to one such action, the “bared breasts incident,” carried out by his radical students in Germany in 1969, in an essay, “Marginalia to Theory and Praxis.” In that essay, he defends himself against the students’ claim that he proved his lack of relevance to contemporary students when he failed to respond to the spectacle of their liberated bodies. He acknowledged that the protest movements seemed to offer thoughtful people a way “out of their self-isolation,” but ultimately, to replace philosophy with bodily spectacle would mean to miss the “infinitely progressive aspect of the separation of theory and praxis” (259, 266). Lisa Yun Lee argues that this separation continues to animate contemporary feminist debates, and that it is worth returning to Adorno’s reasoning, if we wish to understand women’s particular modes of theoretical ii insight in conversation with “grand perspectives” on cultural theory in the twenty-first century.

Zawia DEAN OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND 2020 ABSTRACT This dissertation investigates the mode of the Female Gothic primarily by examining how texts utilize the role of curiosity and the pursuit of knowledge, paying close attention to how female characters employ these attributes. Existing criticism is vital to understanding the Female Gothic and in presenting the genealogy of feminist literary criticism, and yet I argue, this body of criticism often produces elements of essentialism. In an attempt to avoid and expose the biases that essentialism produces, I draw from Sara Ahmed’s theory of queer phenomenology to investigate the connections between the way that women pursue and circulate knowledge through education and reading and writing practices in the Female Gothic.

I open with a history of the trope of deformity and a theory on its applicability to questions of the nation in Canadian fiction. Bonnie Burnard’s A Good House begins the literary analysis and considers how Daphne’s asymmetrical face exemplifies the novel’s overarching deformation of the domestic realist text.

Introduction by Christopher Frayling. The French New Wave of the 1950s and 1960s is one of the most important movements in the history of film. Its fresh energy and vision changed the cinematic landscape, and its style has had a seminal impact on pop culture. The poster artists tasked with selling these Nouvelle Vague films to the masses—in France and internationally—helped to create this style, and in so doing found themselves at the forefront of a revolution in art, graphic design and photography. French New Wave: A Revolution in Design celebrates explosive and groundbreaking poster art that accompanied French New Wave films like The 400 Blows (1959), Jules and Jim (1962) and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964). Featuring posters from over 20 countries, the imagery is accompanied by biographies on more than 100 artists, photographers and designers involved—the first time many of those responsible for promoting and portraying this movement have been properly recognized. This publication spotlights the poster designers who worked alongside directors, cinematographers and actors to define the look of the French New Wave.     1 THE PRISM OF GENDER CATHERINE G. VALENTINE distribute n the metaphorical kaleidoscope of this book, gender is the pivotal prism. It is central to the intricate patterning of social life and encompasses power relations, the division of labor, symbolic forms, and emotional relations I(Connell, 2000). The shape and texture of people’s lives are affected inor profound ways by the prism of gender as it operates in their social worlds. Indeed, our ways of thinking about and experiencing gender, and the related categories of sex and sexuality, originate in our society. As we noted in the introduction to this book, gender is very complex. In part, the complexity of the prism of gender in North American culture derives from the fact that it is characterized by a marked contradiction between people’s beliefs about gender and real behavior. Our real behavior is far more flexible, adaptable, and malleable than our beliefs would have it. To put it another way, contrary to the stereotypes of masculinity and femininity, there are no gender certainties or absolutes. Real people behave in feminine, masculine, and nongendered ways as they respond to situational demands and contingencies (Glick & Fiske, 1999; Pfeffer, 2014; Tavris, 1992). post, To help us think more clearly about the complexity of gender, two questions are addressed in this chapter: (1) How does Western, i.e., Euro-American, culture condition us to think about gender, especially in relation to sex and sexuality? (2) How does social scientific research challenge Western beliefs about gender, sex, and sexuality? WESTERN BELIEFS ABOUT Gcopy,ENDER, SEX, AND SEXUALITY Most people in contemporary Western cultures, such as the United States, grow up learning that there are two and only two sexes, male and female; two and only two genders, feminine and masculine; and two and only two sexu- alities, heterosexual and homosexual (Bem, 1993; Budgeon, 2014; Lucal, 2008; Pfeffer, 2014; Wharton, 2005).
