Concept Note
Concept note The « Culture of peace» concept was first defined in Africa, during the International Congress on «Peace in the Minds of Men», organized by UNESCO in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, in 1989. According to the definition adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, a Culture of Peace consists “of values, attitudes and behaviors that reflect and inspire social interaction and sharing based on the principles of freedom, justice and democracy, all human rights, tolerance and solidarity, that reject violence and endeavor to prevent conflicts by tackling their root causes to solve problems through dialogue and negotiation and that guarantee the full exercise of all rights and the means to participate fully in the development process of their society”1. In Africa, the concept of a Culture of Peace is rooted in the values, belief systems and forms of spirituality, local knowledge and technologies, traditions and forms of cultural and artistic expression that contribute to the respect of human rights, cultural diversity, solidarity and the rejection of violence to build democratic societies. The idea of launching the Biennale for a Culture of Peace draws its inspiration from the Charter for African Cultural Renaissance2, which advocates that culture is the most effective mean for enabling Africa to increase its share of worldwide scientific production and overcome the challenges of globalization. Moreover, this Biennale is fully in line with the Action Plan for a Culture of Peace in Africa, which was adopted in Luanda (Angola) during the Pan-African Forum «Sources and resources for a Culture of Peace» jointly organized by UNESCO, the African Union and the Angolan Government in March 2013. -

The pianist Elisso Bolkvadze, an UNESCO Artist for Peace and a superstar in her native Georgia, presents Prokofiev’s Second Piano Sonata and Schubert’s Impromptus D. 899 in glowing and lyrical interpretations. audite Musikproduktion Ludger Böckenhoff • Tel.: +49-5231-870320 • Fax: +49-5231-870321 • [email protected] • www.audite.de PRESS INFO 40 years Sergei Prokofiev and Franz Schubert – a highly intelligent combination, highlighting the position of the two composers between tradition and innovation. Prokofiev’s sonata oeuvre is signifi- cantly more present in Russia and the states of the former Soviet Union than in Central Europe where, at best, his Seventh Sonata is only occasionally programmed. Yet with his nine complet- ed sonatas, spanning his career from his youth up to the period shortly before his death in 1953, Prokofiev created a musical cosmos similar in range to Shostakovich’s string quartets. Hailing from the Geor- gian capital Tbilisi, Elisso Bolkvadze has chosen the Second Sonata (1912), where Prokofiev adopts an incredibly delicate tone which, at the same time, appears aggressive in its motoric energy, reflecting the modernist spirit of the Russian capital of St Petersburg before the First World War. -

Since the inclusion of copyright and related rights in the mandate of the Organization in 2002, ARIPO has been working with its Member States with the aim of creating national environments that promote and provide effective protection, management and enforcement of copyright and related rights in the respective Member States. Under the strategies to consider in awareness raising programs, the government through the national copyright office needs to play a leading role in raising awareness on copyright and Intellectual Property rights. This would require devising strategies that leverage and take advantage of information and communication technology to disseminate information for outreach and advocacy. With that in mind, creativity can be linked with culture in a bid to raise copyright awareness, Culture can be used as a vehicle for information dissemination about the need to protect and respect copyright. -
