The Grapevine The Newsletter of the International Women’s Association,

IWA Georgia strives to: welcome and assist newcomers to Georgia; foster goodwill and friendship among association members; build relationships between women of different cultures living in Georgia; provide the opportunity to socialize with each other; and enhance our members understanding of Georgia. Noteworthy Charity Concert

Dear Ladies,

There are many events and charities to go to these days but no one in our society is as vulnerable as the young and the old. Children with Leukemia undergo very painful procedures during treatment. Among the physical pain, children experience extreme anxiety, fear, and prolonged emotional stress. Art Therapy has shown to be a useful intervention that can prevent permanent trauma and support the children during these intrusive interventions.

The International Women's Association, the Austrian Embassy, and the Royal Danish Consulate are organizing a Charity Concert on the International Children's Day on Saturday, 1 June 2019. The suggested entrance donation is GEL 50 which are 2 days of therapy.

We would kindly like to invite you to support the concert by coming and donating and by spreading an encouraging word to your friends, business associates, colleagues. rsvp until May 28, 2019, to [email protected]

Feature Article Day

Europe Day is celebrated each year on 9th May, to commemorate the1950 Declaration of Robert Schuman, the French foreign minister at the time. He set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe's nations unthinkable by asking them to share their coal and steel reserves. This idea was the beginning of what is now the European Union, which today unites 28 countries and 508 million citizens for over 60 years of peace and prosperity. On Sunday, 5 May, over 15,000 people came together in Tbilisi to celebrate Europe Day, highlighting the strong relations between the European Union and Georgia. On the occasion of Europe Day, the European Union together with Tbilisi City Hall hosted a public celebration in Tbilisi's Rike Park. Twenty Member States of the European Union presenting their countries and showcasing their cultures to visitors, and Tbilisians and their children were invited to participate in unique games and informative activities. Music, dances and songs were brought to a daytime stage from all over Europe, while young and old were competing in a streetball competition and sampling food from different European countries. This year's Europe Day was held under the motto "Stronger Together" to highlight the strong relations between Georgia and the European Union. 2019 is a double anniversary, marking 10 years of the Eastern Partnership and 5 years since the signature of the EU-Georgia Association Agreement. Feature Article Europe Day The notion of Europe is very old, but where does the name come from? Europe existed as a conceptual construct long before geographers began arguing whether there are seven continents or six (the latter model considers Europe and Asia to be a single continent). The ancient Greeks divided the world into three major units: Europe, Asia, and Libya, the last of which referred to the known northern portion of Africa. Those were the divisions that Ptolemy used when he laid out his map of the world in the Guide to Geography in the 2nd century CE.

From a linguistic approach it is believed that Europe’s name is descriptive in origin. Those who look to the ancient Greek language to parse it roots combine eurys, meaning “wide,” and ops, meaning “face” or “eye,” to arrive at “wide-gazing” as an appropriate description of Europe’s broad shoreline as seen from the shipboard perspective of the maritime Greeks. By extension, it is also believed that this phrase connotes “mainland.” Adventurous travelers who got closer to the northern lands reported the existence of mountain systems and river basins that were much larger than those of the Mediterranean region, along with climates that were very different from those the Greeks experienced, not to mention expansive primeval forests and sweeping steppes. In Greek mythology, Europa was the mother of King Minos of Crete, a woman of Phoenician origin, after whom the continent Europe is named. The story of her abduction by Zeus in the form of a bull was a Cretan story . Noteworthy 2nd Second International Festival of Traditional Crafts Workshops

Ingredients:

For the crusts: 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup blanched almonds 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 stick cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces, plus more for the pans For the filling: 1 cup sugar 2 tablespoons finely grated lemon zest (from 2 lemons) 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice (from about 4 lemons) 1/3 cup fresh orange juice (from 1 orange) 2 tablespoons cornstarch 1 large egg plus 3 egg yolks 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces 3 tablespoons limoncello or other lemon-flavored liqueur For the meringue: 3 large egg whites 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar 7 tablespoons sugar Recipes

Directions:

Make the crusts: Pulse the flour, almonds, sugar and salt in a food processor until the nuts are finely ground. Add the butter and pulse until the mixture looks like coarse meal. Add 3 tablespoons ice water and pulse until the dough starts coming together. Turn the dough out onto a piece of plastic wrap, pat into a disk and wrap in the plastic. Refrigerate until cold but still malleable, about 15 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Lightly butter four 4-inch tart pans with removable bottoms. Divide the prepared dough into 4 pieces, then press into the bottom and up the side of each prepared pan. Freeze until firm, about 10 minutes, then use a paring knife to trim the excess pastry. Place the tart shells on a baking sheet, line each with foil and fill with pie weights or dried beans. Bake until golden around the edges, about 20 minutes. Remove the foil and weights and continue baking until the crusts are golden brown all over, 5 to 10 more minutes. Let cool, then carefully loosen the crusts but leave in the pans on the baking sheet. Meanwhile, make the filling: Whisk the sugar, lemon zest, lemon juice, orange juice, cornstarch and 1/4 cup water in a medium saucepan until smooth. Whisk in the whole egg and egg yolks. Cook over medium heat, whisking, until the mixture simmers, about 5 minutes. Add the butter and limoncello and continue whisking over medium heat until thick like pudding, 4 to 6 more minutes. Spoon the curd into the prepared crusts. Make the meringue: Beat the egg whites in a medium bowl with a mixer on medium speed until foamy, about 1 minute. Sprinkle in the cream of tartar and continue beating until soft peaks form, about 3 minutes. Gradually beat in the sugar and beat until stiff shiny peaks form, 4 to 5 more minutes. Transfer the meringue to a pastry bagfitted with a star tip and pipe onto the tarts. Bake at 375 degrees F until the meringue is set and golden, about 15 minutes. Let cool completely before unmolding. Notices & Special Offers
