University of Southampton FACULTY OF HUMANITIES Becoming a Queen in Early Modern Europe East and West KATARZYNA KOSIOR Doctor of Philosophy in History 2017 ~ 2 ~ UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON ABSTRACT FACULTY OF HUMANITIES History Doctor of Philosophy BECOMING A QUEEN IN EARLY MODERN EUROPE: EAST AND WEST Katarzyna Kosior My thesis approaches sixteenth-century European queenship through an analysis of the ceremonies and rituals accompanying the marriages of Polish and French queens consort: betrothal, wedding, coronation and childbirth. The thesis explores the importance of these events for queens as both a personal and public experience, and questions the existence of distinctly Western and Eastern styles of queenship. A comparative study of ‘Eastern’ and ‘Western’ ceremony in the sixteenth century has never been attempted before and sixteenth- century Polish queens usually do not appear in any collective works about queenship, even those which claim to have a pan-European focus. -

Interdisciplinary Studies in Musicology 11,2012 © PTPN& Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, Poznań 2012 GRZEGORZ JOACHIMIAK Department of Musicology, University of Wroclaw An unknown source concerning Esaias Reusner Junior from the Music Collection Department of Wroclaw University Library ABSTRACT: The Music Collection Department of Wroclaw University Library is in possession of an old print that contains the following inscription: ‘Esaias Reusner | furste Brigischer | Lautenist’. This explicitly indicates the lutenist Esaias Reusner junior (1636-1679), who was born in Lwówek Śląski (Ger. Lówenberg). A comparative analysis of the duct of the handwriting in this inscription and in signatures on letters from 1667 and 1668 shows some convergences between the main elements of the script. However, there are also elements that could exclude the possibility that all the autographs were made by the same person. Consequently, it cannot be confirmed or unequivocally refuted that the inscription is an autograph signature of the lutenist to the court in Brzeg (Ger. Brieg). The old print itself contains a great deal of interesting information, which, in the context of Silesian musical culture of the second half of the seventeenth century and biographical information relating to the lutenist, enable us to become better acquainted with the specific character of this region, including the functioning of music in general, and lute music in particular. The print contains a work by Johann Kessel, a composer and organist from Oleśnica (Ger. Ols), who dedicated it to three brothers of the Piast dynasty: Georg III of Brzeg, Ludwig IV of Legnica and Christian of Legnica. It is a ‘Paean to brotherly unity”, which explains the reference to Psalm 133. -

Postać królowej owiana została czarną legendą, która przedstawia tę niepospo- G litą kobietę jako żądną władzy i wpływów megierę, stanowiącą nieszczęście dla męża i kraju, na którego tronie zasiadła. Sukcesem pierwszego męża Marii Kazimiery — Jana Zamoyskiego — miało być to, że nie pozwolił jej rządzić. Jan III nie zdołał pójść w jego ślady, ulegając kaprysom żony2. Zamoyski rzeczywiście nie oddał zarządu nad swymi dobrami żonie, postępując sprzecznie z obyczajem, a ulegając swym dorad- com, którzy jego żonę — skrzętną i energiczną — traktowali z niechęcią, jako prze- szkodę do łatwego bogacenia się przy hojnym i niepilnującym własnych interesów panu. Również niewierność Marii Kazimiery względem Zamoyskiego, gdy związała się z Janem Sobieskim, stała się podstawą do oskarżeń o zdradę lub planowanie kolejnego mariażu podczas drugiego małżeństwa, a wszystko to pomimo braku jakichkolwiek źródeł, które potwierdzałyby takie działania z jej strony. Wiele faktów z życia Marii Kazimiery zostało przeinaczonych lub mylnie zinterpretowanych — część z tych omy- łek umocowana jest w niezasługujących na wiarę dokumentach z epoki, część jednak oparcia w źródłach w ogóle nie znajduje. Wskutek tych zabiegów postać Marii Kazi- miery została przyczerniona, a jej działania — wyolbrzymione i ocenione jednoznacz- nie negatywnie. -

Press release Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle UJAZDOWSKI CASTLE - A HISTORY The origins of the Jazdów settlement on the high left bank of the Vistula river precede the history of Warsaw and date back to a 12th century ford, connecting Kamień and Solec, which was a river crossing approached by a deep gulch in the escarpment (today Agrykola Street). The hamlet’s name, Jazdów or Ujazdów, is therefore derived from the root “jazd”, meaning “to ride, to ford”. The stronghold overlooking the ford from the south (the present site of Botanical Gardens) was a frequent stooping place of the Mazovian princes. During the 13th century Jazdów was destroyed twice; finally, prince Conrad of Mazovia decided to move his residence to the newly founded the township of Warsaw. Jazdów remained a prince’ castle but was used mainly as a hunting lodge. The second period of the hamlet’s history begins in the 16th century, when at the decline of the Mazovian dynasty their lands were taken over by the Crown. In 1548, after the death of king Zygmunt Stary, the Queen Dowager Bona chose Jazdów for her residence. The spacious wooden court, surrounded by magnificent gardens, was located at the site of today’s Finnish cottage colony. Sometime later, in the 70’s or 80’s, a new royal country residence was erected on the approximate site of today’s Ujazdowski Castle; the moving spirit behind this project was probably Anna Jagiellonka, the wife of king Stefan Batory. According to some records it was here that the great Renaissance drama Odprawa Posłów Greckich (The Dismissal of the Greek Envoys) by Jan Kochanowski was enacted for the royal coupe. -

John III Sobieski A Polish King in Vienna winterpalais Originally built for Prince Eugene of Savoy as a magnificently furnished palace for both residential and representational purposes, the Winterpalais was later acquired by Empress Maria Theresa in the 18th century. It was then utilized as a court chamber, and more recently as the Austrian Ministry of Finance. Today this jewel of the Baroque has been turned into a place of art and culture. A Contribution to the History of Polish‑French Cultural Links in the 17th Century Abstract Roland Desmarests (1594-1653), a brother of the better- known Jean Desmarests de Saint-Sorlin, placed a Latin poem dedicated to the French princess Marie Louise Gonzaga de Nevers in his Epistolarum Philologicarum Libri Duo (Philological Letters, 1655). The princess (who was the future wife of two Polish kings, Władysław IV Vasa and John II Casimir) was about to leave France for far away and exotic Poland. The aim of the article is to analyze the poem and to publish it.
