Rural Vulnerability and Tea Plantation Migration in Eastern Nepal and Darjeeling Sarah Besky Department of Anthropology University of Wisconsin – Madison This paper will analyze migration from rural eastern Nepal to tea plantations in eastern Nepal and Darjeeling and the potentials such migration might represent for coping with rural vulnerability and food scarcity. I will contextualize this paper in a regional history of agricultural intensification and migration, which began in the eighteenth century with Gorkhali conquests of today’s Mechi region and continued in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries with the recruitment of plantation laborers from Nepal to British India. For many Kiranti ethnic groups, agricultural intensification resulted in social marginalization, land degradation due to over-population and over-farming, and eventual migration to Darjeeling to work on British tea plantations. The British lured Rais, Limbus, and other tribal peoples to Darjeeling with hopes of prosperity. When these migrants arrived, they benefited from social welfare like free housing, health care, food rations, nurseries, and plantation schools – things unknown to them under Nepal’s oppressive monarchal regime. -

It is known as Kirat Pradesh before the unification of Nepal. Now, Kirat Pradesh is became political word in Nepal for name of province number 1 but not endorse till present. The Chamling Rai society is comprised different interdependent parts and units as like religion, culture, economy, polity, educational etc. Kirat religion is a part of Rai community constituted by the different units and interdepended among different parts. The Chamling word Nachhung (shaman) is called priest of the Kirat religion. So, this article focuses on the Nachhung who is the Rai priest, shaman and healer as functional unit of the Rai society. The main research questions if how the Nachhung plays function as the being part of Rai society and contribute to existence of Rai society as whole. It explores the interdependence of Nachhung on other parts like rite and ritual, marriage, feast and festival, community, health, social and religious activities. Tylor argues that animism is the first religion of the world. There was found debate on shamanism among different scholars in 19th centuray. Tylor, Schmidt considered shamanism as primitive religion but Durkhiem, Marcel Mauss considered magic as immoral and private act. -

Politics of Culture: A Study of Three Kirata Communities in the Eastern Himalayas by T.B. Subba, 1999, Chennai: Orient Longman, pp. 154, Price: Rs. 160/-. INTRODUCTION Sociologists have observed that minority groups in a society tend to react in a variety of ways to reckon with domination and oppression by the majority. Submissive manipulation, marginal adaptation, with drawal and self-segregation, oppression psychosis, group self-hatred, nativism and movements of reform and revolt are some of these re sponses (Horton and Hunt, 1964). In the book under review namely, the author has given a lucid ac count of the nativistic efforts being made by the Kiratas (a tribal group living mainly in eastern Nepal, parts of Sikkim and Darjeeling in West Bengal) 'to recreate their culture, religion and language'. How ever, the author repeatedly states that this is not going to be an easy or a simple task, the reason being that the Kiratas are not a homogeneous group. There are several subgroups among them, three of which should be deemed major subdivisions, namely the Limbu, Rai (or Khambu) and the Yakkha. The languages they speak also vary. For example, the structure of the Limbu language differs from that of other Kirata tongues in having a fully developed noun declension sys tem, a fully developed verb system, as well as exclusive features such as the glottal stop. -

INTRODUCTION Ethnic identity is the product of a social process whereby social relationships are maintaining, modified. It is the process of identification of communal level and individual level. Identity is formed by social processes and social relationships are the key factor for maintaining, modifying, and reshaping the identity. Members can identify themselves as different from another social group. Barth (1996) argues that ethnic identity constructs some agreement from by outsiders and insider group members as well as identify contextually by themselves from outsider and insider group members. Ethnic identity became the most popular term for a decade in Nepal. Politicians and social scientists have pronounced this term in the state restructuring process of Nepal. Some academic works on ethnic identity have also been done like Shneiderman (2009), Fisher (2001), Gunaratne (2002), Gubhaju (1999) in Nepal but insufficient in terms of migrant Rai ethnic identity. -

D. Cornell University 2017 This dissertation investigates identity politics in Nepal and collective identities by studying the ancestral history, territory, and place-naming of Limbus in east Nepal. This dissertation juxtaposes political movements waged by Limbu indigenous people with the Nepali state makers, especially aryan Hindu ruling caste groups. This study examines the indigenous people’s history, particularly the history of war against conquerors, as a resource for political movements today, thereby illustrating the link between ancestral pasts and present day political relationships. Ethnographically, this dissertation highlights the resurrection of ancestral war heroes and invokes war scenes from the past as sources of inspiration for people living today, thereby demonstrating that people make their own history under given circumstances. On the basis of ethnographic examples that speak about the Limbus’ imagination and political movements vis-à-vis the Limbuwan’s history, it is argued in this dissertation that there can not be a singular history of Nepal. Rather there are multiple histories in Nepal, given that the people themselves are producers of their own history. Based on ethnographic data, this dissertation also aims to debunk the received understanding across Nepal that the history of Nepal was built by Kings.
