9 2018 REPORT 02. 10 2018 REPORT LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

We have reached legal age. 2018 marks 18 years that we have spent working with the most vulnerable youth that require the strongest support to keep school dropouts from missing out on job placement opportunities since this creates greater inequality, insecurity and risk of exclusion. Thousands of people have managed to break out of this cycle, and the number of partners (training centers, companies and volunteers) is impressive. However, anniversaries should consist of more than just looking back with satisfaction. They should also serve as the foundation for a new approach based on everything we have learned. Fundación Exit is ready to begin a new era in which innovation to reduce school dropout rates—Spain happens to have one of the highest in Europe—becomes a 360° vision that is more inclusive, better adapted to needs that evolve as quickly as technological advances and more ambitious as it strives to reach where it is most needed.

In the same way that the job market and evolving needs require us to adapt, Fundación Exit has worked on a new strategic proposal based on the idea of creating ecosystems that enable us to work on job placement together with all the players involved. The aim is to not only include them in the training process, but to have them make decisions through participation and involvement. This is a very ambitious plan, but Fundación Exit was founded precisely for this: to analyze and innovate, without the fear of taking risks and achieving what others are unable to. This is our commitment, of the team that works at the Foundation every day and of all the companies and partners that during these 18 years have placed their trust in an idea and a project that continues to evolve.

These pages contain merely a fraction of that teamwork, of everyone who has made this possible, of what 2018 has represented (the year we reached legal age), and of the ideas and ambition that drive us forward. To everyone, thank you very much!

Rafael Vilasanjuan

11 2018 REPORT 03. 12 2018 REPORT LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Fundación Exit reached its 18th anniversary, and we celebrated this milestone by designing a new strategic plan for the next three years. Some people believe that it is not worth making plans in such a volatile and ambiguous environment, but we have managed to do so and are pleased with the results.

Over the next three years, we would like to place a greater focus on reducing school dropout rates than on job placement. This was a difficult decision, but feedback from the Exit Alumni who participated in the strategic reflection process was quite revealing. As is occurring in the general population, we have observed that career and life paths are becoming polarized: those less fortunate have decided to enter the job market earlier, but in sectors defined by seasonality and uncertainty. As a result, as the years go by, this has not translated into a significant improvement over their starting point. Others have been able to establish longer training itineraries and in sectors where they have evolved professionally, which is key in building a more stable family and life project.

For these reasons, we set the goal of targeting new sectors that are expected to have a greater imbalance between supply and demand. Sectors in which companies say there is no generational changeover, but in turn classrooms are half empty, either because young people do not sign up for these fields or because they choose to drop out. Therefore, the second challenge is to assist young people with a logical training itinerary that will provide them with an intermediate-level education (vocational training or professional certificates). We already supported dual vocational training in 2011 when it was not yet regulated in Spain, and now that it has been implemented in tertiary education or the second year of intermediate-level education, we want to focus on the first year of intermediate-level education since this is when dropout rates are highest (between 30% and 50%).

Lastly, we have spent years supporting the idea of corporate volunteers as coaches/ mentors, and in the next three years we plan to combine this role with that of peer mentors, in which former students mentor young participants. Corporate mentors can be inspirational, open doors to a new world for young people and break the glass ceiling, but in the strategic reflections, participants also highlighted the importance of talking to someone who has shared similar experiences and overcome the same obstacles.

As you can see, this marks another year filled with exciting challenges. If you already collaborate with us, thank you as always for your support. If you just found out about us and strongly believe in the importance of fighting to offer young people a future they can look forward to, please contact us. Shared challenges are even more exciting.
