Uno de esos poemas primerizos nuestros que parecen tangos, o esos otros tan melancólicamente otoñales que yo utilizo para combatir el insomnio. Carraspeó. Dobló parsimoniosamente la hoja en dos y me contestó: “Sí, pero no es muy...muy...que digamos, eh?” Te darás cuenta la razón que tenía. Por eso como tenía razón por eso dejé pasar el tiempo junté fuerza me conseguí una máquina de escribir y ahora te muestro estos versos que -a mi parecer- son bastante muy muy que digamos. LA NUEVA GENERACIÓN Tienen entre 20 y 30 años algunos menos. Y ya hablan de dejar el trabajo a los que tienen que venir. 7 YO Yo, señor, escribo. Vivo a la vuelta de usted, de usted que vive en la calle Paraguay. Pero usted no me conoce y la culpa es mía por no ir a golpear a su casa por no poner el pie en la puerta y antes que usted me hable de que está tan cara la vida, leerle de golpe el poema que acabo de escribir. Sí yo tengo la culpa. Si los del Ejército de Salvación lo hacen, yo que soy menos ridículo yo que lo quiero DE VERAS yo que quisiera ver el amanecer en La Florida todos los días, yo que quiero ser poeta, yo: no voy a su casa ni canto en su vereda ni enamoro a su hija y para colmo usted no me sabrá decir por qué ni yo tampoco. -

Adelita, for God’s sake I beg you, calm the fire of my passion, because I love you and I cannot resist it and my faithful heart suffers for you. 3 “La Adelita” was one of the most popular songs of the Mexican Revolution (1910–1920). According to some sources (see Soto 1990:44), this ballad was originally inspired by a Durangan woman who had joined the Maderista movement4 at an early age. Troubadours made the song—and Adelita her- self—a popular emblem of the Revolution. As Baltasar Dromundo put it, “las guitarras de todas partes se iban haciendo eruditas en ese canto hasta que por fin la Revolución hizo de ella su verdadero emblema nacional” (guitar ists from all over were becoming experts in that song and it became the true em- blem of the Revolution) ( 1936:40). Significantly, Adelita’s surname, as well as the family names of many other soldaderas (soldier-women), remained virtually unknown. However, the popular songs composed in honor of these women contributed enormously to their fame and to documenting their role in the Revolution. -

Spending two months in Mexico, I had the Oppo11unity to learn about the culture, history and lifestyle of the country. What interested me most was the involvement of women. Because Mexico is such a male-dominated society, the role of women is much different than in the United States. Although the role of women is different, they are in no way "behind" the U.S. in progress or mentality. They are merely on a different path to a different goal. This paper is an attempt to describe the past, present and future involvement of women in Mexican politics and economics. It is not the entire story, but only events and occurrences that Tsee as being important. I hope that the paper will open the eyes of those, who are similar to myself prior to studying this topic, and have mjsconceptions about women in developing nations. 2 The Journey Begins: 1910-1940 Women in Mexico have a unique history of involvement in economics and politics. -
