Bass virtuoso STANLEY CLARKE and drummer extraordinaire STEWART COPELAND are uniting this summer to bring a unique eclectic mix of Jazz Fusion, Classical music and Rock to the European festival circuit. Of course, the performance will also include a hit or two from each of their personal careers. Joining them is a group of young but tested musicians including Alex Han on sax, Ruslan Sirota on keyboards and Brady Cohan on guitar.
“I’m very excited about this tour,” says Clarke. “I feel that the wave of the future in live musical performances is unique and unusual pairings like Stewart and me. It’s going to be a positive experience for the audience as well as for us.”
Good friends, this will certainly not be the first time Clarke and Copeland have performed together. Both were key members of the group Animal Logic along with Deborah Holland. Animal Logic released two self-titled albums in 1987 and 1991, which have become fusion cult favorites.
STANLEY CLARKE, a 2011 and 2012 multi-Grammy Award winner, became the first bassist in history who could double on acoustic and electric bass with equal ferocity and the first bassist ever to headline tours, selling out shows worldwide. A veteran of over 40 albums, he won the 2011 Best Contemporary Jazz Album Grammy Award for his album The Stanley Clarke Band. Clarke co-founded the seminal fusion group Return to Forever with Chick Corea and Lenny White. This year Return to Forever won a Grammy Award and Latin Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Forever. He has collaborated with Quincy Jones, Stan Getz, Art Blakey, Paul McCartney and Keith Richards to name a few. Clarke’s creativity has been recognized and rewarded in every way imaginable. He was Rolling Stone’s very first Jazzman of the Year, and bassist winner of Playboy’s Music Award for ten straight years. Most recently he was honored with the prestigious Miles Davis Award at the Montreal Jazz Festival for his body of work. An accomplished film and TV composer of over 60 projects, his credits include Boyz N The Hood, the Tina Turner biopic What’s Love Got To Do With It, Romeo Must Die and The Transporter. He has garnered three Emmy Nominations and a BMI Award for his scoring.
STEWART COPELAND has spent three decades in the forefront of contemporary music as a rock star, acclaimed film composer and film maker, and a much sought after collaborator in the disparate worlds of Rock, World Music, Opera, Ballet and Chamber Music Composition. He is ranked by a Rolling Stone magazine reader poll in 2010 as the fifth greatest drummer of all time. As the founder and drummer of The Police, Copeland has performed all over the world, won five Grammy Awards and sold more than 50 million records. Drummer’s Hall of Fame in addition to being honored by the French government with the Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters. Copeland‘s career as a composer of music for film and television was launched by his score for Francis Ford Coppola‘s Rumblefish, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Score. Additional film and television music credits include Oliver Stone‘s Wall Street, Desperate Housewives and the Oscar-nominated Four Days in September and the Emmy nominated Dead Like Me. His autobiography, Strange Things Happen: A Life with The Police, Polo and Pygmies, was published by Harpers Collins in October 2009.
