For the past ten years, we have tried without success to get Jason Powell celebrities to come to the fair, knowing what star power can do to boost interest and attendance. Shari Prange This year we found out that Woody Harrelson, well-known actor and Benjamin Root activist, would be coming through town during the weekend of the fair, and Connie Said he agreed to speak. Harrelson was on a “Simple Organic Living” (SOL) Joe Schwartz bike/bus tour that started in Seattle, Washington and ended in Santa Barbara, California. His tour was intended to demonstrate that the planet Linda Tozer will not survive unless we all choose to live lightly on the earth. Harrelson Wightman Weese walks his talk (or rather rides his talk). He bicycled the entire tour route, and he runs his support bus, called “Mothership,” on hemp oil and Michael Welch vegetable oil (biodiesel). John Wiles Harrelson buys organically grown hemp clothing, runs all the Mothership Dave Wilmeth appliances on solar electricity, and eats only organically grown foods. He Ian Woofenden was very pleased with his visit to Arcata, especially when he found out that CCAT would donate 250 gallons of their biodiesel (see HP82, page 58) to Rue Wright replenish his fuel supply. We’ve gone through some adjustments in six years of living off-grid, and we are now sailing comfortably on the high solar desert of the Colorado Plateau. South-facing windows facilitate passive solar heating. The newly discovered “energy crisis” masks the real crisis that motivated us to live on solar and wind in the first place—pollution. Moving off coal-fired, nuclear, and centralized hydro power is about ending massive contamination of our air, water, and soils. Conservation is easy once you understand the real issue.

It was composed of a single circuit board, a MOStek 6502 processor, a keyboard, and featured 8k of RAM as well as video interface (Wozniak 161; “Inventors of the Modern Computer”). Wozniak would years later say of his invention: “I wanted to design a machine that did something, on a TV you turn a knob and it does something. On my computer, you push a few buttons and switches and lights would come on (Young and Simon 15).” In 1976, Wozniak and Jobs displayed their creation for the first time at the Homebrew Computer Club, a computer hobbyist organization local to Palo Alto, California (Wozniak 166-7; “Apple I”). Many there viewed the Apple I as nothing more than a novelty, due to the fact that it used a MOStek 6502 processor, which was cheaper and less complex than the more widely used Intel 8080 processor (“Apple I”). Despite this fact a local computer distributor called “The Byte Shop” viewed the Apple I and decided to order 50 units at $500 per machine (Young and Simon 35). The computer went on sale in July 1976 at the market price of $666.66, marking the beginning of apple computers (Wozniak 185). Around 200 Apple I‟s were sold by several small retailers before the release of Apple II (“Company: Apple Computer, Inc.”).

I’m also a huge fan of the Macintosh, Apple Computer, and, of course, Steve Jobs. I am and have been very inspired by Steve. But I’m also a fan of John Sculley and have owned his book for many years. John Sculley has a bad rap. He is blamed for firing Steve Jobs, as well as almost bankrupting Apple. I fell in love with the Mac and Apple in late 1986, while John was at the helm. Thus began my romance with the company, the Mac, and other Apple products, and the culture in being one within the minority of personal computing. A non-DOS, then non- Windows user. A Mac user. It was a few years later that I started studying computer history. I’ve been learning more about the two Steves, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. In recent years, and now after Steve’s death, John Sculley has been very remorseful for his actions surrounding Steve’s departure from the company. I believe that John has been way too hard on himself about this. As he took his position seriously as CEO, took a stand on the decision about the Apple ][, then was essentially forced by Steve to have the board vote between them.

    Chapter 10 Apple Computer in the 1980's As a dominant personal computer manufacturer in 1980, Apple Computer had distinct characteristics. It had developed in the Apple II and the related disk drive, technology and ease-of-use features that enabled it to make the transition from hobbyist or technical hacker user to the mass consumer market. These innovations and the release of VisiCalc spreadsheet software resulted in the commercial success of the company. It had espoused statements such as “Never build a computer you wouldn’t want to own” and “One person -- one computer.” The visit to the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) in 1979 changed the course of product development. The new PARC human interface concepts suited the vision of Apple. It continued the innovative initiatives of Wozniak. The development of the Lisa computer and the Macintosh computer that would be the future of Apple in the 1980’s. 10.1 ... Corporate & Other Activities Public Stock Offering The initial founders Jobs, Wozniak, Markkula, Holt and the venture capitalists who provided the financing had a tight control of the Apple Computer shares. Markkula also kept a firm control on the later sale and award of Apple shares. Initial shares went through several splits that significantly increased their value. A share distributed before April 1979 was the equivalent of thirty-two shares on the day that Apple went public. During 1980 the market for new stock issues had improved. In August 1980 the Apple Computer board of directors decided to make a public offering of shares in the company.
