A fact sheet from July 2016 Gerard Soury Netting Billions: A Valuation of Tuna in the Eastern Pacific Ocean Overview Together, the seven most commercially important tuna species are among the most economically valuable fish on the planet. Globally, commercially landed tuna product has a value of US$10 billion to $12 billion per year to the fishermen that target tunas and more than US$42 billion per year at the final point of sale. These conservative totals do not account for noncommercial values of tuna, including those associated with sport fishing, other forms of tourism, and the ecosystem benefits of living tunas. For it, free fatty acid (FFA) and conjugated diene (CD) formation, peroxide value (PV), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and fluorescent compounds formation were measured in two different white muscle zones (dorsal and ventral). Comparison with volatile amine formation (total volatile base-nitrogen, TVB- N; trimethylamine-nitrogen, TMA-N) was carried out. A gradual lipid hydrolysis was observed in both zones along the whole experiment. CD and peroxides formation was important during the experiment; peroxides showed the highest value at day 15 in both zones, that was followed by a peroxide breakdown at day 19. Interaction of oxidized lipids with nucleophilic compounds present in the fish muscle led to a gradual fluorescence development during the storage time in both zones. Mean values of the lipid content showed to be higher in the ventral zone than in the dorsal one, although significant differences could not be detected (p<0.05). -

6.0 DESCRIPTION OF THE PELAGIC LONGLINE FISHERY FOR ATLANTIC HMS The HMS FMP provides a thorough description of the U.S. fisheries for Atlantic HMS, including sectors of the pelagic longline fishery. Below is specific information regarding the catch of pelagic longline fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico and off the Southeast coast of the United States. For more detailed information on the fishery, please refer to the HMS FMP. 6.1 Pelagic Longline Gear The U.S. pelagic longline fishery for Atlantic HMS primarily targets swordfish, yellowfin tuna, or bigeye tuna in various areas and seasons. Secondary target species include dolphin, albacore tuna, pelagic sharks including mako, thresher, and porbeagle sharks, as well as several species of large coastal sharks. Although this gear can be modified (i.e., depth of set, hook type, etc.) to target either swordfish, tunas, or sharks, like other hook and line fisheries, it is a multispecies fishery. These fisheries are opportunistic, switching gear style and making subtle changes to the fishing configuration to target the best available economic opportunity of each individual trip. Longline gear sometimes attracts and hooks non-target finfish with no commercial value, as well as species that cannot be retained by commercial fishermen, such as billfish. When targeting swordfish, the lines generally are deployed at sunset and hauled in at sunrise to take advantage of the nocturnal near-surface feeding habits of swordfish. In general, longlines targeting tunas are set in the morning, deeper in the water column, and hauled in the evening. -

C.9. Ctenochaetus binotatus (Itingan) C.9.1. General Biology Inhabits coral and rubble areas of deep lagoon and seaward reefs. Usually solitary, grazing on surface algae. Feeds by scooping film of detritus and unicellular algae (e.g. dinoflagellate Gambierdiscus toxicus) that produce ciguatera toxin making this species a key link in the ciguatera food chain. Commonly caught by nets. Distributed in Indo-Pacific: East Africa to the Tuamoto Islands, north to southern Japan, south to Figure xx. The target species, Ctenochaetus inotatus central New South Wales (Australia) and New Caledonia. Size Distribution A total of 162 fish individuals of Ctenochaetus binotatus were measured to the nearest centimeter. Measured length were from both the weekly measurements of the enumerators and biological samples brought Figure xx. Approximately 30% of the total catch is below the computed Lm50 of C. striatus of this study. Since, there is no available data and literatures regarding the length at which it reaches maturity, we will use the estimated Lm50 and Lm95 of C. striatus. C.9.3. Gonadal Maturation and Maturation Curve Only 5 biological specimens were brought to the lab for examination. Out of 5 samples, 4 were males and only 1 female. All were staged as mature. -

E-mail: [email protected], [email protected] Abstract - Rough oceanic triggerfish Canthidermis maculata (Bloch, 1786) belongs to family Balistidae and has year round availability as the main by-catch species in tuna fishery industry. Due to high availability and low market value, this species gain low demand in the local market. Further, the society believes that the taste of this fish species is similar to chicken and therefore chicken dishes are prepared with the substitution of C. maculata. Due to lack of knowledge gap of nutritional value of this species, the objective of current study was to estimate nutritional components of C. maculata in order to popularize it as a food source to fulfill nutritional requirement of the society. Fish samples were collected from fish landing sites of three regions (Mirissa, Dondra and Tangalle) in the southern coast of Sri Lanka. Samples from commercially demanded fish species Cephalopholis sonnerati (Tomato Hind) and chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) were analyzed in order to compare the proximate values of C. maculata. Samples were collected from three individuals of each species and each sample was analyzed in triplicates. Fatty acid profile of C. maculata was determined by Fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) Test with gas chromatographic technique. Analyses revealed that flesh samples of C. maculata contained important fatty acids such as Eicosapentaenoic acid and Docosahexaenoic acid in high amounts with other essential fatty acids. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract This is the first in a series of reports describing new records caught with circle hooks, a method only now being employed in exploratory fishing in Brazilian deep waters. Several new records of deep-water fishes were obtained with this equipment. In this paper we record for the first time the occurrence of two genera and species of Bramidae in Brazilian waters: the tropical pomfret Eumegistus brevorti and the keeltail pomfret Taractes rubescens. We also report on previously unnoticed collection records from preserved specimens of Pterycombus brama in museum collections, and the first capture of an adult bigscale pomfret Taractichthys longipinnis in Brazil. These new records increase the number of bramid species known from Brazilian waters to ten. The addition of P. b rama to the Brazilian Bramidae makes the Southwestern Atlantic the only known area of the world where two species of Pterycombus are found together. -
