  • SWOT Analysis of West Anatolia in the Context of History and Culture Tourism Potential
Central European Journal of Geography and Sustainable Development 2019, 1 (2): 44-52, Article no. 4 SWOT Analysis of West Anatolia in the Context of History and Culture Tourism Potential Tamer Baran¹,*, Serkan Bașol² ¹Pamukkale University; [email protected] ²Pamukkale University; [email protected] Received: 12 July 2019; Revised: 25 August 2019; Accepted: 30 August 2019; Published online: 25 October 2019 _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Abstract: The Anatolian peninsula is a unique geography which harbors almost all development stages of human history. As a piece of land that witnessed almost all the cultural, political, social and economic structures established by humanity including the first settlements built following the hunter-gatherer cultures, the start of agriculture, the foundation of the first central states following the principalities of the Bronze Age, the formation of empires following the Ancient Polis (city) States, Anatolia has a naturally rich archaeological heritage. In order to make use of this rich historical and cultural heritage in an efficient and sustainable way, especially in the tourism sector, one needs to determine the strengths and weaknesses of this potential. This study aims to make better use of the tourism potential of Western Anatolia by examining the strengths and weaknesses of the region with SWOT analysis method on Western Anatolia sample. Key words: tourism potential, tourism marketing, history and culture tourism, West Anatolia, SWOT analysis ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 1. INTRODUCTION Historical and cultural tourism (HCT) can be defined as "a tourism phenomenon that aims to witness, experience and acquire knowledge about the concrete and intangible values belonging to the contemporary and ancient cultures and that consists of direct and/or indirect activities based on the acquisition of products and services related to this" [1].

These lectures were delivered in winter, 1971, at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and in spring, 1972, at the American Academy in Rome. The infectious enthusiasm of Gerald F. Else, Secretary of the Jerome Committee and a friend of many years, and the kindness of John Griffiths Pedley and other colleagues made the stay in Ann Arbor a memorable experience. We are deeply indebted to the Jerome Lec tures Committee and to its Chairman, Dean Donald F. Stokes for their generous hospitality. The American Academy in Rome is a wonderful haven for scholars. It was a great pleasure to renew contacts with the devotees of Rome, young and, old, and to learn from the Roman colleagues of their new, exciting discoveries.

  • Assessment of Tourism Effects on Geographical Area from the Perspective of Local Tourism Actors: Bergama Case (Izmir/Turkey)
European Journal of Geography Volume 5, Number: 2:27 -42 April 2014 ©Association of European Geographers ASSESSMENT OF TOURISM EFFECTS ON GEOGRAPHICAL AREA FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF LOCAL TOURISM ACTORS: BERGAMA CASE (IZMIR/TURKEY) Emre ATABERK Ege University, Institute of Social Sciences, Human and Economic Geography Doctoral Programme, 35100, Bornova - İzmir, Turkey [email protected] Abstract In an area where tourism endures and starts to develop, its effects on economic and social structure and its positive and negative aspects can clearly be observed. It is possible to classify these effects as economic, social-cultural and environmental-ecological effects. Within the context of positive and negative effects of tourism, substantial “visual” changes may arise in natural and cultural geographical area. Thereby; while tourism can have a “standardisation” effect on the area, it can also establish “unique tourism environments”. Bergama is one of the most important districts for its development at cultural tourism in İzmir. Rich in its cultural attractiveness, tourism in Bergama has brought forth to some visual changes in town’s geographical area. “Functional” changes constitute the primary source of these changes. Because, any regulation and innovation realized for tourism or tourist is reflected directly on geographical landscape. For example; transportation services, historical and recreational area design, lightning, souvenir shops, accommodation, food&beverage and entertainment facilities, restoration studies etc. have created grave innovations/changes on conventional landuse. In this report; spatial changes in Bergama as a result of tourism will be analysed in time scale taking the views of local tourism actors into consideration, reasons will be questioned and critical approaches for obtained results will be put forward.

A PEPLOPHOROSIN CORINTH (PLATES 71-73) IT HE LATE Professor Schuchhardtrecently called attention to two original Greek statues of the Severe period, which he convincingly suggested were taken to Pergamon as booty from Greece.' In trying to pinpoint the place from which these sculptures were taken, he drew parallels with several contemporaryworks, and found that the sculptures from Pergamon resembled a peplophoros torso in the Corinth Museum.2 On the strength of this similarity, and of a passage in Pausanias (7. 16. 5), he concluded that the two statues from Pergamon were made in Corinth around 470-460 B.c. He advocated a similar date for the peplophoros still in Greece. These very valid conclusions, and the sensitive stylistic analysis of the sculpture involved will also bring, it is hoped, renewed attention to the statue in Corinth, which has recently been cleaned, set up with a slightly different tilt and rephoto- graphed, so that its study is now greatly facilitated.
