  • Recognition of Light-Openings in Iranian Mosques' Domes with Reference to Climatic Properties
International Journal of Architectural Engineering & Urban Planning Recognition of light-openings in Iranian mosques’ domes With reference to climatic properties Mohammadjavad Mahdavinejad1,*, Soha Matoor2, Amene Doroodgar3 Received:June 2011, Accepted: November 2011 Abstract Mosque architecture is considered as a potent visual symbol of the Islamic architects’ design ability. Prayer-hall as the manifestation of equality between the believers and the unity of architectural space has challenged such an ability throughout the history. This study, considering the characteristics of light-openings in the domes of Iranian mosques’ Prayer-hall, aims to investigate these domes’ possible relationship with the climatic features of each mosque. To this end, eighteen case-studies according to the research analytic approach are studied to determine: 1. the relationship between the mosques construction period (Iranian architecture styles) and its light-openings number on the one hand and its climatic features on the other hand, 2. The relationship between the light-openings’ location and the climatic features of each mosque, 3. The relationship between the light- openings’ number and the climatic feature of each mosque and finally, 4. The relationship between the prayer-hall’s height and the number of light openings of each mosque on the one hand and its climatic feature on the other hand. The study shows that Iranian architects have given considerable priority to the natural ventilation function of the light-openings, So, what used to be considered as the domes' main function, allowing the light to the interior space, is considered as their secondary function. Keywords: Light-opening, Light, Natural ventilation, Hot-dry climate, Cold climate, Mosque prayer-hall 1.

  • Origins of Taste in Architecture
Vol.14/No.53/Nov 2017 Received 2017/02/27 Accepted 2017/09/01 Persian translation of this paper entitled: مبادی سلیقه در معماری is also published in this issue of journal. Origins of Taste in Architecture Nadie Imani* Sevil zafarmandi** Abstract Taste in architecture means to choose the optimal building which is the most important issues in this area, attributed to different factors. But it can be understood in two introductory ways .The first way relates to outward or objective characteristics, and the second way relates to the perspective of the individual’s subjective perception .In addition to these two cases, functional aspects or living in the building and its location in the urban landscape are also important in architecture. • Central Iran اﯾران ﻣرﮐزى
© Lonely Planet Publications 221 Central Iran ﺍﻳﺮﺍﻥ ﻣﺮﮐﺰی Ever since Cyrus the Great’s dramatic rise from provincial overlord to ruler of the largest empire on earth, central Iran has been something of a showcase for the region’s great- est civilisations. The unrelenting splendour and majesty of Esfahan, the refined elegance of Shiraz and the mud-brick antiquity of Yazd, Abyaneh and Kharanaq are a fascinating contrast, representing the fusion over 2500 years of myriad cultures and starkly differ- ent terrains. Then, of course, there’s that monumental expression of artistic harmony commissioned by Darius I – Persepolis. With so much on offer, it’s no surprise that the towns of Iran’s central provinces are where you’ll probably spend the most time. But it’s not just about ticking off the popular sights, because central Iran has many an unsung gem. Kashan, with its splendid mosques, gardens and magnificently restored traditional houses, is one. If you want to get off the beaten track there’s the desert oasis of Garmeh, the cave village of of Garmeh, caravanserai stops such as Zein-o-din and Toudeshk, or the chance to camp with nomads in the Zagros Mountains. CENTRAL IRAN Central Iran’s people are as diverse as the places they live. In Qom they’re conservative and religious, Shirazis are laid-back and fun-loving, and the Qashqa’i and Bakhtiari nomads live a lifestyle dictated by nature. Often you will experience the region’s cultural richness and physical beauty in combination: sitting in the garden of Hafez’s tomb discussing the ways of the world with a Shirazi medical student, perhaps; watching a nomad woman make yogurt by hand; or drinking tea with a carpet salesman in Esfahan’s Imam Sq.
