SUPPORT YOUR CHILD’S TEAM Now is the time for parents and supporters to put their hands up for the roles that teams will need over the season. Cheering your child’s team is mandatory. We’d like to say that volunteering is mandatory too, but by definition it isn’t. Volunteers in a sports club are essential and valued and make a huge difference to the experience our young players will have on and off the football field. All roles have been defined in the Season Handbook to help make it easier to understand what’s needed. These roles must be filled: Team Manager (season commitment) Trainer (first aid accreditation needed) Runner (week by week) Waterperson (week by week) Goal / boundary umpires (week by week) Umpires Escort (week by week) Timekeeper (week by week) Speak to your player’s coach and find out what’s needed. Some roles require a Working with Children Check. It’s fun, rewarding and an opportunity to learn more about the game. 2 VOLUNTEERING Altona Junior Football Club is a well-managed, strong club with a great culture and a strong commitment to the development of their players. Our teams have a culture of teamwork, player participation and a passion for the game. This is achieved through good governances and planning at both the Club and Team levels. This work is carried out by Volunteers across all levels; it is the volunteers that make us a strong club. Our Volunteers are the backbone of our club, its culture and ongoing success. As each new football season starts, there are gaps left by parents whose children have turned 16 years old or moved to other endeavours. As always, this year, we are looking to fill these gaps with new volunteers to assist us fill the multitude of roles at the club and team levels. We encourage all parents, at some stage in their child’s football career, to support AJFC by volunteering for one of the many roles. Whether you are new to the club or if your son or daughter has played at AJFC for many years we ask for your support. Most of the Club Management and Team volunteers have been with the club for a few years. We always have more roles for volunteers so please take the time to make contact and understand how as little as a few hours a week will help. TRAINERS’ ACCREDITATION – MAKE SURE IT’S CURRENT All Team Trainers need to check that their accreditation is current before the start of the season. If accreditations have expired, come to the clubrooms, get a form and make sure it is returned ASAP. WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECKS - COMPULSORY Volunteers in the roles of coach, team manager, trainer, runner should have a current Working With Children Check lodged or completed before the start of the season. Forms available from the clubrooms. NEWSLETTER NUMBER 54 FEBRUARY 2019 Altona Laverton Historical Society Inc. PO Box 236 Altona 3018 NEWSLETTER Cherry Lake-Altona AND THE CHERRY FAMILY In our Newsletter Number 52,June 2018, we mentioned that Altona Laverton Historical Society Archivist,Ann Cassar has been researching the Cherry Family, a pioneering family in the Altona area, and this project continues as an ongoing project with any further information still being sought about this family and their former land holdings, a brochure has been prepared showing the currently held information, and any person who considers they may have relevant information or photographs is encouraged to contact the Society. The area bearing the family name and currently known as Cherry Lake appears in early publications simply as Truganina Swamp or Cherry Swamp. !1 NEWSLETTER NUMBER 54 FEBRUARY 2019 In the Werribee Shire Banner April 27,1927 P4,a letter to the Werribee Shire Council from Altona Council stated in part that “the area would be converted to a large artificial lake”,this was seeking to encourage visitors and residents to the area, this received a response that the “proposed lake was a farce’. The area now controlled by Melbourne Water, formerly known as Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW),indicates that the Truganina Swamp was a terminal swamp with no clearly defined outlet to the Bay, and is fed by the waters of Laverton Creek. Historically during flood periods when the capacity of the swamp was exceeded waters would spread across local streets and reserves towards Port Phillip Bay, flooding large areas of local developed land,(such an event occurred in January 1963).
