* A new community room at ground level

* A public Function Centre / Restaurant for up to 260 people with views of the oval and the bay

* Work has commenced on the grandstand with the Barry Round Room already removed

* The total redevelopment is due for completion in February 2012

Other features of the Burbank Oval Redevelopment includes the installation of a 1 million litre tank which has already been installed under the WFC oval (Morris Street wing) to store stormwater rain for irrigation of the oval, the spectator areas and part of the adjacent Cyril Curtain Reserve. The Burbank Oval playing surface is being reconstructed for better drainage and irrigation. It is to be sewn with drought tolerant Santa Anna Couch grass before Christmas 2010. No cricket will be played at Burbank Oval this season and no football until the 2012 VFL Season. Six new synthetic cricket practice pitches have been constructed and are about to be used by the Williamstown Cricket Club. Five more practice nets have been built for future turf practice wickets when the irrigation system comes on line for next cricket season.

Player Departures

A real focus of the off season has been to maintain our key players with a view of building on what we achieved in 2010. The drafting of Peter Faulks to Fremantle was a great result and we firmly believe he is capable of stepping up and playing consistent AFL footy from the start of the 2011 season. Key senior players Brett Johnson, Ben Jolley, Cameron Lockwood, Matthew Little, David Stretton, Ben Davies, Matthew Grossman, Dane Rampe and Matthew Cravino have committed to play for the Seagulls again in 2011. In 2010 Williamstown recruited a very talented bunch of young players out of the TAC Cup including Ed Carr, Michael Fogarty, Josh Griffiths, Dion Lawson, Stephen McCallum, Kwame McHarg, Jack Purton-Smith and Nick Sing plus the promising key position defender Jake Wilson who was recruited from Portland and all of these players have resigned for the 2011 season. Richard Knight who overcame a knee reconstruction last season, Nick DiMartino (who has lost 10kgs) and Sam Mason have re-signed and we expect to keep running defender Phil Smith. Johnno Hevern and Lee Spiteri who were both on the 2010 list are training with an aim of being re-contracted for next season. Player departures include Luke Cartelli and Mick Tanner who are transferring to Coburg FC in search of greater senior opportunities after playing with Williamstown for the last 3 and 4 years respectively. Other players who could not obtain regular Reserve games have departed which include - Dylan Ayton (Spotswood), Jake De Sousa (Taylors Lakes), Jordan Florance (Aberfeldie), Jacob Graham (Oak Park), Trent Lee (Lara), Harley Lewis (Barwon Heads), Adam Marangon (Old Melbournians), Jye Sandiford (South Bendigo), Nathan Uren (Doutta Stars) and Josh Young (Keilor). Other players to depart include the very popular Dean ’the Moose’ Muir who has returned to Inverleigh due to family reasons, Jeremy Mugavin has decided to return and play at Uni Blues and Brian Fenton has moved to Adelaide and will play with North . The other player who is contemplating his future is Tom German and we await for his decision on his playing future.

New Faces Williamstown have contracted 7 young players out of the TAC Cup - Dylan Conway, Taylor Jones, Jack Gray, Justin Morris and Nathan Giles from the Western Jets, Premiership player Alistair Kefford and Sam Caruso (Wangaratta / Murray Bushrangers). Williamstown has also signed Brydon Coles who won the Sydney Football League U/18 Best and Fairest in 2008 and then the Senior Competition Best and Fairest in 2009 before moving to Geelong and playing for Geelong West / St Peters in 2010. Corey Lawson has also joined his brother Dion at Williamstown after playing at Werribee in 2009 - 2010. Corey played with Altona Juniors and the Western Jets and is recovering from a knee reconstruction. The Club has also welcomed back the popular Adam Cook who has played the last 2 seasons at Wodonga Raiders and represented the strong Ovens and Murray FL in rep games. A large number of players from metro and country TAC Cup Clubs are training with Williamstown and many are awaiting University offers before committing to our Club. The Club aims to have the bulk of its list signed up before the Christmas break on Monday 20th December and training will resume on Friday 7th January. THE WORD FROM WILLIAMSTOWN— DEC 2010 Page 3 Check us out at williamstown.aflvic.com.au Liam Picken Development Academy

The Williamstown Football Club is pleased to announce an exciting new initiative for Season 2011 and beyond. Aptly named after one of the club’s biggest success stories, the “Liam Picken Academy” is a high quality personal development program that provides support to 1 st and 2 nd year players aged between 18-21. Young footballers with dreams of being drafted onto an AFL list or aspiring to be involved with an elite VFL Club will be given every opportunity to realise their full football potential. Along with an intense football focus, the program will also concentrate on developing the personal attributes of participants to enhance their ability to build an alternative career beyond football. The Liam Picken Academy will take a holistic approach to development with players undergoing a Career Oriented Participation induction program with all players graduating with a Certificate 3 in Sport & Recreation. This is the same induction program that all 17 AFL clubs under- take with their first year players. With an emphasis on life and professional development, components of the induction program include financial advice, goal setting, resume writing, time management, cooking lessons and health and wellbeing. The Club has elected to go through InFront Sports, who have vast AFL industry experience having worked with the AFL Player’s Association and the AFL Coaches Association. InFront Sports will be co-ordinating the Certificate 3 in Sport & Recreation and have created a development program that provides fantastic professional development opportunities for our players. As previously mentioned in this newsletter the Club is very excited about the recent appointments of Justin Plapp and Jeremy Barnard who will both be heavily involved in the Development Academy. We are thrilled to recruit coaches such as Justin Plapp and Jeremy Barnard who have such a strong background in the Development of players and are excited by the challenge of taking our playing list to the next level, both individually and collectively. The Williamstown Football Club is excited about witnessing our players flourish within the Liam Picken Academy. The Club thanks Liam Picken for allowing us to associate his name with our Development Academy. We look forward to many more players following the pathway that Liam Picken endured in making the transition from TAC Cup, VFL Reserves, VFL Seniors and then onto Senior AFL football. THE WORD FROM WILLIAMSTOWN— DEC 2010 Page 5 Check us out at williamstown.aflvic.com.au Football Williamstown throws its support behind Willi Under 18’s The once mighty Williamstown Juniors Under 18’s have experienced some tough times in recent years, their demise being the result of a range of issues such as shortage of players, volunteers, match day officials and support staff. The matter was raised at a recent meeting of Football Williamstown where it was agreed that urgent action needed to be taken to reinvigorate the team and restore it to its former glory. WFC General Manager Brendan Curry stressed that a strong, vibrant and successful Under 18 team was crucial to the ongoing growth of football in the community of Williamstown. It was agreed that representatives of Williamstown Juniors and the CYMS meet to explore ways by which the challenges facing the Under 18’s could be successfully dealt with. As a result of that meeting, a Joint Steering Committee was formed to oversee the management of the Under 18’s going forward. Members of the Joint Steering Committee are Bill Deller Chairman, Peter Welsh, Darren Dawson, Rod Ford, Steve McHugh, Mark Hunter, Ian Fairley, and Darren Williams. An Organisational Structure was established and the appointment of key personnel is currently taking place. With the brief to seek out and appoint the ‘best available person to the position of coach’, the committee prepared a list of possible candidates. After an 8 week search, the committee finally found its man in Mathew Montebello and moved quickly to secure his services. Mathew’s CV is most impressive. He played junior football at Altona in the WRFL and after a short stint at Western Bulldogs/Williamstown in 2000, he moved across to Spotswood where he was club captain for 5 years and played in two WRFL Premiership Teams. Mat is a Primary School teacher at Willy Primary and he has also been successful with the school football team reaching the Victorian Primary School finals on several occasions in recent years. A brief run down of Mat's football career is listed below. - Played first full year of senior football at Seddon (B &F Winner) 1999 - Pre-season with Western Bulldogs 1999-2000 - Williamstown VFL Reserves (B&F Winner) 2000 - Captain Spotswood Football Club 2002- 2007 - Spotswood Seniors Best & Fairest Winner 2002 - WRFL team of the year 1999, 2001,2002, 2003, 2006 (Captain) - Spotswood Senior Premiership Captain 2007 - Spotswood Senior Premiership player 2009 Not only is his CV outstanding, but his enthusiastic approach is already setting the standard for others to follow. He is currently finalising his coaching team, setting the pre-season training programs and personally speaking with all of the players. The team will be supported by a well resourced, committed and focused off-field management group under the leadership of Manager Steve McHugh and Match Day Manager Ken West. All the vital signs are strong. The resurrection has begun. Bill Deller (Chairman, Football Williamstown) 2010 Community Day The inaugural Williamstown Community Day was held under perfect sunshine at our home game against the Bendigo Bombers. A big crowd of over 2,000 people enjoyed the many activities that were on offer on the day. The Williamstown Food & Wine Tasting Festival was enjoyed by over 150 people who got the chance to sample free food and wine products from local suppliers at half time of our senior game. The many kids who attended were treated to a range of activities such as After Active School Communities games, the MFB Fire truck and SmokeBuster, Victoria Police activities, as well as receiving free show bags and free balloons thanks to the support of our sponsors and Pekish @ 1 Mason Street. There was entertainment for all at half time with the running of the Westpac Half Time Sprint where Mason Kirkwood from Newport Power won $500 for his local football club. Another highlight was the launch of our past players & officials club – “Club 1864”. A stirring rendition of the “Anthem of a Seafaring Man” from Steven Zammit at half time involving some of the Club’s past champions, bagpipes, and premiership flags evoked strong memories of yesteryear. The day was a resounding success and we look forward to continuing to build on this day in the future. Thanks to everyone for their support on the day and in particularly the fantastic support of our sponsors Westpac, Hocking Stuart, Crust Pizza, Subway, Eddie the Butcher, Vili’s Pies, Vic Police, MFB, Pekish @ 1 Mason Street, City West Water and the Australian Sports Commission’s After Active Schools Communities program. The gold coin donation on this day raised $1982.75 which has been given to the Club’s chosen charity, the Williamstown Hospital. Gulls Report To the following gulls members I thank you for all of your assistance during the 2010 season: Hot Dogs - Mandy Drew, Karen Rog, Sandy Kennedy, Shortty, Sheep Gate - Jami Moran, Frank Rog, Gerard Drew, Geoff Horsburgh, Ian Sharp Luncheons - John Clifton, Carol Utber, Ian Crocker Ladies Day - Carol Utber, Mandy Drew Gulls half time refreshments - Frank Rog, Ian Crocker, Bob Pearman, Gerard Drew BBQ - Jami Moran, Garry Jeremiah Also thanks to Nicole Hopkinson for her continued support and we wish her all the best in her future studies, Bernie O'Sullivan for all her assistance with merchandise, Jude, Kerry & Monna for assistance in Hot Dog Stand and if I have left anyone out, I sincerely apologise. Our function at Shorties was again a great success and we greatly appreciate the players, coach, Board and admin staff for their attendance. We have uploaded photos of this day on our website gallery for you to view. Season 2011 will be a year of home games being played at different venues (predominately Werribee) but there will be opportunities for Gulls mem- bers to attend a Presidents lunch and have half time refreshments where possible so you will still receive great value for your membership. During the year I will be wanting to organise an executive committee to look at revamping the format of the Gulls to suit our new facilities at Burbank Oval. The current format of membership has been unchanged since 1989. Our present income stream from the gate and hot dogs will need addressing as some members are into their 20 th year of service and need to retire to do what we all like to do and that is watch the Seagulls play. This is one area that will need to be resolved before we return full time to Burbank Oval in 2012. Once the season is underway I will ask for members to put their hand up and join the executive to help address these issues. We will only need about 6 members, so please give it some serious thought over the summer break. Until 2011, Merry Christmas and please take care over the summer.

Cheers Judi Jeremiah THE WORD FROM WILLIAMSTOWN— DEC 2010 Page 6 Check us out at williamstown.aflvic.com.au Williamstown Juniors Another successful season for all teams at Willy Juniors in 2010. The U13 Blue team was successful winning the U13B premiership and the U16D's were also premiers in their division after a exciting Grand Final that went into 'extra time'. Congratulations to all players and coaches involved in both teams. The club had 8 teams participate in the WRFL finals, with 6 teams competing in Grand Finals, which is great effort by all the players and coaches. Hayden Barnett finished off a great season by winning the WRFL B&F in the U16D competition and Callan Gibson, Harry Jennings and Jack Noonan polled well in the U11A's - they finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectfully. Pre-Season Camp in Western Australia The Williamstown Football Club is excited to announce that the team will have a pre-season camp in Perth, Western Australia departing on Wednesday 19th January and returning on Sunday 23rd January. The Club has committed $10,000 to the camp with the rest of the proceeds being paid individually by those attending and other fundraising initiatives organised by the players. The team will be staying at the Subiaco Football Club at Leederville Oval and we are grateful to everyone at Subiaco Football Club for the use of their facilities and their hospitality. Fortunately the Club has strong links in Western Australia through Peter German and Jeremy Barnard and we will be heading over to Perth for 4 days with the aim to train hard, bond as a group and to focus on our game style and team rules. We hope that in the future we will be able to reciprocate the hospitality of the Subiaco Football Club when they have a pre-season camp in Melbourne in the future. Williamstown Football Manager Chris Dixon said that it was great the Club was committing to take it's professionalism to the next level. "I know a lot of the boys are very excited having not been to Perth before. The camp will provide a great environment to continue to improve our fitness base in a new and challenging environment." The itinerary will be finalised next week and will be available to view on our website. Vale - Alby Outen Williamstown 1955 and 1956 Premiership player Alby Outen passed away on 24th November. Alby played 55 games and kicked 9 goals and was remembered as a top class back pocket who was prepared to run through a 'brick wall' for his team mates. Former Premiership Captain Gerry 'the Monster' Callahan remembered Alby for 'his electrifying dashes and he was always a sight to see when in full flight.' Alby had battled illness for a considerable time and on behalf of the Williamstown Football Club we pass on our best wishes to his family.
