PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Season 2018 was once again an extremely challenging year on all fronts, 1 ½ wins, some close loses but once again our playing group were extremely competitive. I am constantly being questioned why we are not winning more games or why can’t we recruit better players, the answer is very simple, Finance!!

Our values are on development and more importantly on our community input, we are acknowledged as the leading VFL Club in these areas and we will continue to strive to remain the leaders. I urge all people who have been involved in our great club over its long journey to become a member or a sponsor to help us climb the difficult ladder, because without your support we could easily become another Brunswick or Prahran which would be a tragic outcome for all concerned.

I would like to thank my fellow board members for their continued support throughout the season, to Sebastian Spagnuolo, Alex Morella, Adrian Dixon, Nick Duryea, and the remainder of our support staff, thank you. To Kerin Lawson, Ian Liversidge, Brian Elvery, Michelle McNair, and also our Past Players and Officials Association your efforts are greatly appreciated.

To Leigh Adams, his fellow coaches, fitness, medical and training staff you all do a remarkable job under the circumstances, and I can assure you your efforts are greatly appreciated by the board and all our supporters.

Finally to our wonderful sponsors both great and small thank you for supporting the club in 2018 and we look forward to your ongoing support in 2019.

In closing a final thank you to our loyal supporters who continue to be there week after week, thank you and I look forward to seeing everybody in 2019.

Regards,

Kevin Breen President Coburg Football Club

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT

The 2018 season was obviously a year of on and off field challenges, but one that should again provide many lessons for all levels of the club moving forward.

Football Department: From a wins and losses point of view the season record doesn’t look great with only the 1 win and the one draw, which meant the club finishing at the bottom of the VFL ladder.

Leigh Adams completed his first season as our senior coach and his first season in the VFL competition. No doubt it was a challenge for Leigh, but a challenge that will provide him some great learnings as we head into 2019.

Under Leigh, we debuted no less than 19 new players to pull on the club’s guernsey.

Leigh was assisted by Ben Osborne, Andrew Sturgess and Tom Curran with Adrian Dixon and Alex Morella providing administrative support. Todd Beames was our new High Performance Manager and he had the majority of the team fit and available for selection most weeks, Todd’s program saw us with one of the healthiest VFL lists in season 2018.

Thank you to all football department staff for their efforts and hard work in 2018. For 2019, the club has already signed 21 of 45 players and with preseason having already commenced the players are working hard to improve under Leigh.

Commercial Update: In 2018, we set a club record of 681 members following on from the 280 that we had in 2017. This record can be attributed to the club participating in a new program under the guidance of membership guru David Friend. Setting the record was great but we need to work harder to firstly re-sign those 681 members for 2019 and then grow that number further.

Sponsorship revenue was steady with the well documented departure of CFMEU as a major sponsor hurting the bottom line however we did very well to welcome in a new co-major sponsor, Ryman Healthcare. Ryman Healthcare will be building an aged care facility on the old Coburg High School site next to our ground, and they should be seen as long term sponsors of our club.

Gameday revenue was well down on previous years due to the loss of the Development League (reserves) competition. Unfortunately with 2pm game times and no curtain raisers, visitors were less likely to get to the game early to enjoy lunch or a drink, therefore our matchday revenue suffered. When the 2019 fixture is released you’ll see how the club has addressed this major concern.

The loss of development league also hurt our events operations as events and functions were not attended with the same numbers. This is the new landscape and reality that our club must live with and the club’s committee will be working hard to address this in the future.

We just didn’t really know how much the loss of the Development League would hurt our club, but now that we’re 12 months down the track we can definitely see it’s been a major loss to us in many ways. The club still holds a debt that we are working hard to reduce and remove as soon as possible. To achieve this though, we need our second revenue streams to really take off. We have partnered with the Coburg Moreland Bowls Club and we’re hopeful that over the 2018-19 summer periods we can use that venue to create some revenue opportunities for the club.

Thank you to all of our club sponsors in 2018, in particular to the ETU for their long standing commitment to our club, Ryman Healthcare, Piranha, Strathmore Community Bank, ATEL, Comselec Services, Coburg Lager and all others.

4 Coburg Football Club Inc. -2018 Annual Report

Facilities Update: 2018 will be remembered as the year that the redevelopment of Piranha Park/ really grew legs. Our football club was able to petition for State Government funding contribution to the redevelopment.

The redevelopment that we need is one that will see 4 new male and female friendly changerooms (2 VFL level and 2 local level), a new events space, greater access for all visitors, greater public amenities and a new canteen. Following on from all of the hard work, the State Government agreed to contribute $3million in April 2018, this was then matched dollar for dollar by the Moreland City Council later in the year.

The total value of the project is approx. $9million and as things currently stand, there is still a funding gap but we are working with both AFL , Cricket and the Federal Government to try and fill. Getting the gap filled is crucially required in order to give our players, staff and members a modern facility that will drive our club into the future.

Season 2020 looks to be the season most impacted by the redevelopment and the club is now working through the plan for how the club can raise revenue without home games in that particular season.

Staff update: Thank you to the following staff members, volunteers and work placement students that worked for and assisted the club in 2018 – Alex Morella, Adrian Dixon, Ash King, Miguel Saroli, Daniel Atamian, Nick Duryea, Gilbert Northrop, Jaryd Crapper, Lachlan Daly, Brooke Varney, Jack Kovacic and Mark Paxton from our media team, Brad Powell, Paul Rocca, and the Junior players and parents, Doriana Pinazo and her family that work in the canteen, Ben Whatman and the stats team, our runners Fab Monaco and Alan Vernal and our SEDA school students. They have all been great support staff for our football club.

Awards/ Achievements *Marcus Lentini and Lochlan Dickson both capped their first VFL season’s off by being joint winners of the 2018 Jim Sullivan medal as the club’s Best & Fairest Winners. *Marcus Lentini was also named in the VFL’s Team of the Year, an amazing achievement for a 19 year old in his first VFL season. *Vicki Cleary Day game against Collingwood with the game on live TV, a great day in the community and one where we again honoured the family of a Coburg FC legend but also played our part in raising awareness for violence against women. *Celebration of NAIDOC week in the game vs Frankston *Kevin Breen and Gary Sheldon elevated into Legend status with the club *Alan Eade honoured with Life Membership *Daniel Venditti being back in Australia to receive his Hall of Fame inclusion *Kevin Breen being awarded VFL Life Membership for his services to football *Club achieved 2 live free-to-air TV games for the first time in over 10 years.

Events/Functions Our club hosted the following events during the 2018 Season: *2018 Season Launch/Family Day – Coburg Moreland Bowls Club. Well received event, more enjoyable day which incorporated the player guernsey presentation. *2018 Reverse Raffle *2018 Best and Fairest night – Aurora Receptions, East Brunswick, $100 per head, 240 people attended. *Weekly Hume Blues nights at the Coburg Moreland Bowls Club *Ladies Day in round 14 vs Sandringham

In 2019, the club will look at our events space with cause for change, as the old fashioned footy club functions don’t work anymore as they’re not seen as being inclusive and the club will look to create a more modern and youthful events calendar.

5 Coburg Football Club Inc. -2018 Annual Report

Acknowledgements The board of Kevin Breen, Wayne McLachlan, Dario Ascenzo, Steve Russo, Alex Sapurmas, Jason Milani, Mark Pedersen and Jasmine Breen are all did a great job governing our football club and I look forward to again working with the board in 2019 with the full knowledge that they are the right people for our club and all members, players and staff should feel assured that the club is in the right hands and on the right path forward.

Thank you to Jason Milani and Wayne McLachlan for their outstanding service as Board Members, both will not be seeking re-election to the board in 2019.

Thank you to John Hook from AFL Victoria for his ongoing support for our Football Club. John is retiring from AFL Victoria in December 2018 & we wish him all the best. Thank you also to Ricky Bell from AFL Victoria for his support of our club through the funding process of the Redevelopment of the Coburg City Oval.

Concluding comments and projections for 2019 Season 2019 will be another season of change at Coburg. Some of our players have moved on for greater financial reward and some for greater chances of finals success but that’s ok, we will again have a list of young, aspirational footballers but the core group of returning players will be wiser for their experiences in 2018. Leigh Adams will be smarter for having gone through season 2018 and will have the 2019 list of players buying into the culture and football that he wishes the team to be playing. Leigh, like all of us, wants the results to improve in 2019.

Off the field, the challenge remains for our club. We need to continue to boost membership, sponsorship, game day revenue and our Junior and Female football programs.

The more revenue the club, our people and our networks can bring in, the more we are then able to put into the football programs to see us thrive into the future.

The club needs to continue to look at the way we operate and always plan to operate better or differently so that we can achieve greater outcomes for the club.

Undoubtedly, it is a dream of all of ours that our club is back where it should be as a powerhouse of the VFL, and it’s very possible for us to get there, but before we can get there, we all need to understand where we’re at, the challenges we face and then plan appropriately with good governance and management.

Thanks again to all of our members, staff, players, coaches, families and sponsors for their contributions in 2018, looking forward to an improved 2019 with your support again.

Seniors Coach’s Report - Season 2018

With new coaching staff, fitness staff as well as a lot of new players bought into the Coburg Football Club over the off season, we embarked on a new era with high hopes that a new game plan and fresh faces around would create some new excitement, and hopefully some improved results on field.

Through our new High Performance Manager Todd Beames along with his support staff, the players were put through a testing pre season that left the group confident that our fitness levels would be the equal of any team in the competition.

Along with our doctors and physios, I can’t thank our fitness team enough for the job they did getting our players in the best condition possible week in and week out over such a long pre season and season.

In what was a very trying season in terms of wins and losses (1-1-16), I am still taking a lot of positives out of the season just gone.

From a statistical point of view, we were able to improve our percentage, we were scored against less, and attained a lower average losing margin, all while learning a new game plan and debuting 19 new players into our club.

The obvious highlights of the season were a draw against Sandringham in a cruel twist, and a big win against Frankston.

The longer the season went the better. I thought our group played well and were a bit unlucky to have not added to the win tally a couple more times. With a young group, there are going to be inconsistencies and we tended to get them within games, playing a great half or quarter to only let ourselves down with a poor quarter as well. I have no doubt with some strong leaders around, this group and the experience that our young players got from this year that we will be in a much better position to compete next year.

In closing, I would like to thank my coaching staff, Seb Spagnuolo, Kevin Breen and his Board, and all the Staff & Volunteers of the club for all their hard work and commitment in a tough year, but in a year where we all learnt a lot that can only help us going into the 2019 season.

Coburg Football Club Past Players & Officials Association Report

Once again, I have to say that season 2018 was an interesting year.

Let me take this opportunity to welcome our new Coach Leigh Adams who had a tough first year. Thank you to both Seb and Alex for a job well done, and a very big thank you to all our great sponsors. Let me also say a job well done to our President Kevin Breen, “the best in the business.”

The game day raffles this year were a huge success, so thank you to all those who helped make it possible and I would also like to thank Phil Cleary for his work in organizing the “The Vicki Cleary Day” game against Collingwood. Well done Phil.

On behalf of The Past Players & Officials I would like to congratulate both Kevin Breen and Gary Sheldon on their very well deserved inductions as Legends of the Coburg Football Club, also Daniel Venditti for entry into the Hall of Fame, and Alan Eade as a Life Member. VFL Life Membership was also awarded to Kevin Breen for his service to football. Congratulations to Marcus Lentini and Lachlan Dickson for jointly taking out the Jim Sullivan Best and Fairest Trophy.

On a sad note, we lost one of our past greats in Robert Herbert, a Life Member and Premiership Player, also Mabel McDougall, another Life Member. May they rest in peace.

Let’s hope that next year Leigh and his staff can push for a more successful 2019 on field. Good luck Leigh. We have this year donated to the club player jumpers and trophies, so will still need your help with memberships and donations so that we can continue to support the club.

In closing I would like to thank my committee Ian Liversidge, Brian Elvery, Wayne McLachlan, Alan Walsh, Michelle McNair and also the fantastic help from Vin Taranto towards the end of the year, what a legend he is. All the best to Kevin, Seb, Leigh, our sponsors and supporters. Let’s get behind them for a prosperous 2019.

Coburg Junior Football Club Report

Coburg FC’s Junior Program enjoyed a positive step forwards in Season 2018. With the Juniors being early in their growth phase, there were a number of highlights & exciting signs that will give the families a lot of reasons to be excited about 2019 and beyond. Like many establishment phases however, this growth also provided fresh challenges throughout the season, and will provide valuable experiences & considerations for the club going forward.

The obvious positive is the growth from one U9 team in season 2017 to two in season 2018, with both teams at full capacity. The interesting growth came during throughout the season, with new players signing up off the back of the hype that was generated about Coburg by their friends at their primary school. This organic growth around friendships & community should be central to how the club looks to build going forward.

The growth is largely driven by the coaches, Chris Humphries & Lewis Cross, who have done an outstanding job of setting the tone and culture for both parents & players throughout the season. This not only facilitated a positive environment & experience for families, but also provided an opportunity for both teams to develop strongly on-field throughout the season, which makes for exciting possibilities when these young players begin to compete for points, hone their skills and build upon their friendships in the coming years.

Junior Girls footy at Coburg FC is also in a very early phase, with the club welcoming groups of girls to the club through a series of free clinics to get a feel for the game. These clinics, delivered by AusGirls Footy program & AFL Victoria coaches, also provided an enthusiastic & fun environment to develop, while also opening the door to potential registrations for both Auskick & EDFL Girls competition in 2019.

Off-field, the club continued to build relationships with a number of external stakeholders including the EDFL, Moreland City Council, AFL Victoria and more. Perhaps most important of all is the club’s relationship with the primary schools aligned with the club through AFL Victoria’s ‘District Scheme’. While the message of Coburg FC’s senior program aims to reach broadly across the Moreland region, increasing the dialogue between Coburg FC Juniors and primary schools within the proximity, allows the friction of promoting Boys & Girls footy to be significantly reduced. Cultivating relationships with established partners such as McDonalds & University will also be extremely valuable resources as the Juniors expand into the future.

As the club aims to build in the coming years, these ambitions are also likely to be met with challenges going forward. This includes the increased responsibility of parents, families and volunteers (regarding match day roles & off-field administration). Team managers in Season 2018 (Mike Bruce & Michael La Porta) did a tremendous job throughout the season, however Team managers in 2019 will need increased support & cooperation from parents going forward, especially with the likely added demands of an U11s team, increased registrations and beyond. Exploration of new avenues to promote Coburg FC’s Junior program, building Girls footy and facilitating relationships with local schools will be important areas to continue growth in 2019.

Overall, the Coburg FC Juniors have exemplified a passionate, fun & welcoming environment for families to be a part of in 2018. With the Coaches & parents already establishing the fundamentals of sportsmanship & teamwork within their players, the Club should anticipate an exciting future for Coburg FC’s Juniors; one built upon strong development & mateship.

On a personal note, I’d like to extend a huge thank you to all who gave their time, energy and positive vibes to Coburg’s Juniors in 2018, I wouldn’t have been able to do my work without all of you.

Coburg Auskick Report

The Coburg Auskick season 2018, was the first year consisting of the new model of ‘Auskick 2.0’ that was unveiled, with the focus of the 10 week Auskick season to be fast paced, engaging, and full of footy fun. We had a total of 68 participants from of 4-10 joining in the sessions on Friday night under lights at Piranha Park.

The 1 hour sessions consisted of jam packed activities, where our next generation of Lions showed off their awesome marking, agility, kicking skills, and most importantly, the goal kicking and post goal celebrations. A highlight of the season was when Coburg’s very own gun defender Jesse Corigliano came down and joined in with our activities, and doing a question and answer session afterwards.

In conclusion, I would like to say a big thanks to Sebastian Spagnuolo and Alex Morella for their support in me Co-Ordinating Auskick at Coburg. Also, a massive thank you to all the parents that brought their kids and who helped run the skills & drills at our sessions on Friday nights. Last but not least, thank you to all the superstar ‘Auskickers’ who came down and joined in our sessions.
