Today’s revolutionary developments in Information Technologies and multi-dimensional risks triggered by reorganization strategies have added to the well-defined military threats of the Cold War era. Security concept mainly perceived as military security before the Cold War era has gained a more profound meaning with the end of Cold War; therefore, political, social, economic and environmental issues have been incorporated into this concept. The changing security environment and technological developments require Land Forces Command to have a force structure which is flexible enough to adapt to such developments. In this regard, Turkish Land Forces Command has adamantly been sustaining its efforts to meet the requirements of 21st century with continuous progress perspective while it has been maintaining a force structure capable of facing the threats and risks in today’s environment. By the time the ongoing and prescribed modernization projects are realized, 2020’s will have been a landmark in Land Forces Command’s force development and modernization. While the conducted studies have presently been exploited to put forward short and medium term measures, plans for long term prospects have been made by envisioning the combat environment of 2050’s. In parallel with these improvements in Land Forces, Turkish Land Platforms Industry has strengthened its capabilities and technology to meet the changing requirements due to changing threats. Today, Turkish companies dealing with land platforms are capable to design develop and produce various types of vehicles with no major technical support from foreign sources. National Main Battle Tank ALTAY, Tactical Wheeled Armoured Vehicles, Amphibious Armour Combat Earthmover, Amphibious Assault Bridge and Armoured Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles (Kirpi) are the local development projects conducted by SSM. It is obvious that Turkish Land Platforms Manufacturers have taken achievements not only in Turkey but also in different markets. FNSS succeeded the largest ever defence export last year in a single project achieved to date by a Turkish defence industry. On the other hand Otokar exports its vehicles to many countries. Consequently, It is foreseen that 2020’s will be landmark both for Turkish Land Forces and Turkish Defence Industry for a better future Enjoy this issue.... With the help of the national, multinational and joint defense industry projects that have been undertaken in Turkey by the undersecretariat, the defense industry has become a highly capable community comprising large-scale main contractors, numerous sub- system manufacturers, small- and medium-sized enterprises, R&D companies who are involved in high-tech, niche areas, research institutes, and universities.

    Evaluations on BMC A.Ş. BMC was established in 1964 in İzmir with participation of the Özakat family combined with the technology of the English BMC Leyland Group in order to manufacture trucks, tractors, heavy and light commercial vehicles. In the early years, Austin and Morris- branded commercial vehicles were manufactured. BMC's domestic capital, which initially was at the rate of 74%, increased over the years and reached 100% in 1989 as a result of the acquisition by the Çukurova Group. Having contributed to the development of the Turkish automotive sector since it started its manufacturing in 1966, BMC manufactured its first diesel engine in Turkey and adapted petrol engines to diesel engines in 1976. In addition to motor vehicles, BMC also manufactured industrial engines, generators, marine engines and military products required by the industry. BMC is a company that exists in the automotive sector as an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and has the capability to manufacture trucks, buses, light commercial vehicles, and armored vehicles for the defense industry as well as casting parts and engines at two individual facilities. It has human resources with the capacity to create original designs and to develop new models thanks to R&D activities. The facility also has a training center and an apprenticeship school, both of which provide qualified manpower.The sales, marketing and after-sales services relating to the manufactured products are carried out in all operational markets using distribution channels and services authorized by BMC. At the facility, which is unproblematic in terms of machinery, equipment, human resources and market, manufacturing was interrupted in February of 2013 due to the financial problems.

In the Republican Turkey, the draft [conscript service system is the valid application whereby privates (rankless plain soldiers)] are recruited from among healthy and young male citizens, for a specific term specified by law. Such draftees (conscrips) constitute the backbone of the military man‐power. Their numbers attain figures much bigger than the numbers of rank‐carrying personnel, namely the petty‐officers and officers (generals are very few in number). It is a widely known fact that military life, all over the world, is indeed tough and this is especially true for the rank‐and‐file, who constitute the lowest levels or the base of the involved hierarchical pyramide. When conscripted for the service, the crushing majority of the young lads go to serve willingly (see Figure 1) and proudly and even with pleasure (see Figure 2). Those who do not readily render themselves to the armed forces are only a small minority. The reason for that is the high prestige enjoyed by all military personnel within the society. Deeply‐rooted historical and cultural interpretations come into play, to make us understand the significance and even the sacredness of the armed service. Indeed, merely a collection of songs and ballads praising military themes, justifies the high value of soldierly ways for Turkisp people. The injustices inherent in the Versailles peace settlement only worscncd the complicated national questions which bedevilled the whole of Europe. The military, political and economic developments which followed i9 i8 drove the European world towards a new grouping of powers. At the bcginning of the i930s the countries of the Balkan Peninsula once more bccame the stage in an acute struggle among the largest nations in the world. The interests of Britain, France, Germany and ltaly clashed, as the Balkan countries occupied a crucial position on the East-West route. The confiicts among the greater European states, sharpened on the eve of the Second World War, aggravated the politicaI situation in the Balkans and impeded the realisation of the regional diplomatic plans of both Western countries and of Nazi Germany and Fascist ltaly. Hence a closer scrutiny of the distribution of power in southeastem Europe and the Ncar East during the Iate i930s, as well as the policy of the great powers vis-lı-vis this area may help to better grasp the complcx international configuration prevailing in Europc on the brink of war. Continuing its traditional policy of balance of power in Europe long af ter the First World War, Britain contributed considerably to the rehabilitation of Germany as a military and political power on the European continent intended to counterbalance the exccssive strengthening of Francc.     A VIEW OF THE HISTORY OF THE ISTANBUL FACULTY OF MEDICINE Prof. Dr. Nuran Yıldırım The Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, the Department of History of Medicine and Ethics Attributing the roots of the Istanbul Faculty of Medicine to the Fatih Darüşşifa after a great deal of discussion, the 500th anniversary of medical education in Istanbul was celebrated in 1970. The soundest documents showing that medical education was carried out in the Fatih Dârüşşifa were the appointment papers (rüus) of medical students for the dârüşşifa in the 60 years between 1723 and 1783. These nine rüus, which were recently published, clarify that there were positions for six medical students in the dârüşşifa, and that whenever a vacancy came up, a new medical student would be appointed by the chief physician to undergo a systematic medical training. 1-Archival document concerning Ismail Efendi‟s appointment in place of Derviş Mehmet in Fatih Darüşşifa after his death. With the opening of the Süleymaniye Medical Medrese, medical education in Istanbul, which had started with the Fatih Dârüşşifa, became institutionalized. The opening of a medical medrese for the first time in the Ottoman State is accepted as being an important step in our history of medical education. The Süleymaniye Medical Medrese (Süleymaniye Tıp Medresesi) was a medrese for specializing, or a “post-graduate” course, as only students who had completed their classic medrese education could continue. Not only did the physicians that were trained join the scholarly classes, but at the same time they could be qadi or rising even to the level of sheikh-ul-Islam or grand vizier.
