Spreading Bulgarian Medieval Manuscripts with Natural Science Content in Wallachia and Moldavia
Abstract: Bulgarian medieval Philosophy and Natural Sciences were of great signifi- cance for the development of the natural sciences of the Orthodox Slavs and in the Balkan countries: Serbia, Russia, Wallachia and Moldavia. After the Ottoman conquest of Bulgaria, many valuable Bulgarian manuscripts were taken out of the country and many Bulgarian scholars, grammarians and clergymen were sent into exile. This article presents the spread of the natural sciences in the Principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia by the preserved manu- scripts and translations of Greek and Bulgarian works, such as “Physiologus”, “Hexaemer- on” by Severianus of Cabala, Symeon’s “Miscellany”, (“Izbornik Svyatoslava” 1073), Erotapokriseis, etc. Résumé: La philosophie médiévale bulgare et les sciences naturelles eurent une impor- tance majeure dans le développement des sciences naturelles des Slaves orthodoxes et dans les pays balkaniques: la Serbie, la Russie, la Valachie et la Moldavie. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 ABSTRACT The subject of this thesis is the development of a literary culture among the Romanians in the period 1829-1890; the effect of this development on the Romanians’ drive towards social modernization and political independence; and the way in which the idea of literature (as both concept and concrete manifestation) and the idea of the Romanian nation shaped each other. I concentrate on developments in the Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia (which united in 1859, later to form the old Kingdom of Romania). I begin with an outline of general social and political change in the Principalities in the period to 1829, followed by an analysis of the image of the Romanians in European public opinion, with particular reference to the state of cultural institutions (literacy, literary activity, education, publishing, individual groups) and their evaluation for political purposes. -

Cull 1 Abolitionism in the Danubian Principalities Olivia Cull PSU Challenge History of Modern Europe Mr. Vannelli 17 December 2019 Cull 2 “Will you dare count yourselves among the civilized peoples as long as it is possible to read in your newspapers, ‘for sale, young gypsy woman’?”1 Swiss-Romanian abolitionist Emil Coli de Guggsberg’s democratic accusation reflects the surge in abolitionist movements throughout the Western world during the mid 19th century. Stirred by liberal values imparted by Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815), many Western Europeans began to actively protest the imbalance of power in traditional, feudalistic hierarchies. One key facet of this revolutionary fervor was an increased effort to abolish traditional practices of slavery, which were seen by an expanding audience as abhorrent and shameful. These widespread trends of social reformation reached the Danubian Principalities of Wallachia and Moldavia (a section of current day Romania) in the early 1800s. -
O Sută De Ani De Cartografie Lingvistică Românească
Book Review Symposium Romanian Literature as World Literature Mircea MARTIN, Christian MORARU, Andrei TERIAN (eds.), Romanian Literature as World Literature, New York, Bloomsbury Academic, 2017, 357 p. Includes bibliographical references and index Keywords: World Literature; Romanian literature; methodological nationalism; planetary turn; politics of reading; cosmopolitanism Introduction The idea of inviting to this symposium several scholars of Romanian literature and placing their reviews in a transnational, intercultural, and cross-methodological dialogue was inspired by the truly dialogic architecture of the book under scrutiny. Romanian Literature as World Literature (RLWL) is a collection of 15 solid case studies, prefaced by an introductory epistemological “manifesto,” which argues, step by step and essay after essay, for a cosmopolitan geopolitics of reading national literature(s). The outcome of the book review symposium is twofold. First and foremost, it offers a critical overview of the volume under discussion, in relation to other comparative literary histories, on the one hand, and to Romanian literary historiography, on the other hand. Second, and more importantly, the dossier outlines a methodological debate. RLWL posits a paradigm shift in the study of national cultures, and the said shift calls for a radical rethinking of the discipline’s idiom, as well as for reframing the “objects” of study – be they individual authors, literary works, artistic groups or “Romanian literature” as a whole – in the broader context of world literature. Among the contributors to this book review symposium, Romaniţa Constantinescu, Roberto Merlo and Christian Moraru are teaching either Romanian, or English and comparative literature at Western universities, Andrei Corbea-Hoişie and Andrei Terian are professors working on comparative literature and critical theory in Romania, while Cosmin Borza and Andreea Mironescu are researchers of literature and literary theory also working in Romania. -
Diasporic Networks Narrate Social Suffering a Dissertation
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Francophonie and Human Rights: Diasporic Networks Narrate Social Suffering A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Literature by Simona Liliana Livescu 2013 © Copyright by Simona Liliana Livescu 2013 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Francophonie and Human Rights: Diasporic Networks Narrate Social Suffering by Simona Liliana Livescu Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Literature University of California, Los Angeles, 2013 Professor Efrain Kristal, Co-Chair Professor Suzanne E. Slyomovics, Co-Chair This dissertation explores exilic human rights literature as the literary genre encompassing under its aegis thematic and textual concerns and characteristics contiguous with dissident literature, resistance literature, postcolonial literature, and feminist literature. Departing from the ethics of recognition advanced by literary critics Kay Schaffer and Sidonie Smith, my study explores how human rights and narrated lives generate larger discursive practices and how, in their fight for justice, diasporic intellectual networks in France debate ideas, oppressive institutions, cultural practices, Arab and European Enlightenment legacies, different traditions of philosophical and religious principles, and global transformations. I conceptualize the term francité d’urgence , definitory to the literary work and intellectual trajectories of those writers who, forced by the difficult political situation in their home countries, make a paradoxical aesthetic use of France, its ii territory, or its language to promote local, regional, and global social justice via broader audiences. The first chapter theorizes a comparative analysis of human rights literature produced at a global diasporic site by transnational authors circulating between several locations - Middle East, North Africa, Cuba, Eastern Europe, France and the United States - that inform their cultural identities and goals. -
