Drawing on Jerome Bruner’s narrative approach (with an eMphasis on self-stories and Micro-narratives) and the theory of social representations, this work provides an insight into the Multi-diMensional relationship between borders and identities, and the connections between social representations and practices that illustrate cross-border aspects. Thus, the key focus of this analysis is to determine how current practices in terms of flows, passage, and cooperation in Europe influence iMaginaries and the discursive construction of the border. Keywords: 1. Narratives, 2. borders, 3. identity, 4. otherness, 5. Catalonia.

  • Cerdanya, Territorio Fronterizo Y Lugar En Sí Mismo. Los Vaivenes Del Borderland Franco-Español En Un Enclave Catalán
Cerdanya, territorio fronterizo y lugar en sí mismo. Los vaivenes del borderland franco-español en un enclave catalán JOAN J. PUJADAS [email protected] Universitat Rovira i Virgili ALBERT MONCUSÍ FERRÉ [email protected] Universitat de València With a long-term historical perspective, the processes of transformation and the continuities in the social, economic and territorial organization of Cerdaña, a Catalan Pyrenean plain, are traced. Divided in 1659 by the Treaty of the Pyrenees between France and Spain and submitted in 1833 to the new provincial division in Spain, there is a marked per- manence of community sentiment, as an agricultural unit until the early twentieth century. The border controls, far from dividing the community, reinforced the reproduction of family and community interests, which were governed by medieval Catalan Civil Law, and by the set of agree- ments between communities that regulated the use of collective goods. The processes of tertiarization of the economy (second residences and winter sports) have transformed in a few decades the patterns of be- havior and collective identity to a greater extent than did centuries of control and regulation of the absolute monarchies or the liberal state. Keywords: región transfronteriza pirenaica; trabajo inter-fronterizo; Cerdanya; Cataluña.

  • Cross-Border Relationships in the Context of the Mental Perception of a Borderline – Experiences from Spanish-French and Polish-German Border Twin Towns

Boundaries from borders: Cross-border relationships in the con- text of the mental perception of a borderline – experiences from Spanish-French and Polish-German border twin towns. Quaestiones Geographicae 35(1), Bogucki Wydawnictwo Naukowe, Poznań, pp. 105–119, 1 fig., 1 table. ABSTRACT: In this paper, the borderlands, in the context of the psychological perception of frontiers, were presented. The common relationships between different nationalities living in border twin towns was a principal point of analysis. During the investigation two main research questions were asked: Is a frontier a barrier or a bridge in the common relationships between nationalities living on both sides of the borderline? and Does the trans-border casual social in- tegration stimulate openness to neighbours? The study was conducted in two double towns: La Jonquera (Els Límits) – Le Perthus at the Spanish-French border and Słubice – Frankfurt-am-Oder at the Polish-German border. The data were gathered from surveys by questioning locals and visitors during street polling. The design of the questionnaire included three main groups of questions relating to: 1) the perception of the borderline and the role of the border twin towns, 2) the attitude towards neighbours and identification with the borderlands, and 3) the future of the borderline in the context of the twin towns existence and cross-border linkages.

  • Explaining Variation in the Salience of Catalan Nationalism Across the Spain/France Border
Explaining Variation in the Salience of Catalan Nationalism across the Spain/France Border Laia Balcells i Ventura Yale University (June 2009) 1. Introduction In 1659, the kingdoms of France and Spain signed a peace treaty by which a part of the Spanish territory inhabited by ethnic Catalans became part of France (the Treaty of Pyrenees). Since then, Catalan identity persisted on both sides of the France-Spain border. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries this identity was politicised and was converted into the basis of a nationalist movement that aimed at the political sovereignty of the Catalan nation; in other words, a national identity was created. However, neither in its origins nor today is the salience of this Catalan national identity homogeneous across the boundary: while Catalan national identity is politically and socially relevant in Spanish Catalonia, it is almost non-existent in French Catalonia. In this paper I analyse the historical evolution of the Catalan identity in these two territories, focusing on the pattern of incorporation of this identity into a political ideology: nationalism. My aim is to use this comparison in order to provide new insights in the large debate about the factors explaining Catalan nationalism, which has involved historians, sociologists, political scientists, and anthropologists during decades (e.g. Solé-Tura 1967, Vicen-Vives 1970, Linz 1973, Balcells 1991, Sahlins 1989, Termes 2000, Boix 2002), but where contributions can still be made. This is especially the case given recent theoretical developments in the study of nationalism. The main argument defended in this paper is that the variation in the salience of Catalan national identity in these two regions is explained by the characteristics of the historical processes of spread of mass literacy in France and Spain, namely by the characteristics of the ‘scholastic revolution’ (Darden 2007).

It forms part of a larger community called Canaveilles, which is about 6km walk away. It is a tiny village that is basically perched on the south facing side of a mountain at an altitude of 1375 metres (4500 ft). Llar has reliable electricity, water and ADSL supply, but no shop or bakery. Where is it? Llar is located in the Catalan Regional Natural Park, about half way between Perpignan and the small tax free country of Andorra. The local people around Llar talk about distance in terms of time. For example, if you ask “how far is it to Prades?” the answer would be “about 40 minutes”. Even though distances are not long, such as to Andorra or Ax-Les-Thermes, the area, in the department “Pyrénées Orientales 66”, is mountainous with winding roads. Something to consider when planning trips in the area & estimating your arrival time so you don’t get here the first time in the dark! WiFi: LlardeVivre Password: LlardeVivre Llar de Vivre Angela & Boudewijn’s place How to get here? Llar is not well serviced by public transport, so you will need a car. A regular small car is sufficient, you don’t need a 4x4. The road up to Llar leaves the N116 at Fontpédrouse..

Geography in Catalonia 1 Geography in Catalonia Antoni Luna and Enric Mendizàbal A history of Catalan geography 1 The chronological evolution of geography in Catalonia is obviously strongly related to the historical events that took place in Catalonia and in Spain during the same period. Moreover, we should say that the development of Catalan geography follows the same ups and downs of the Catalan national movement over the last century, sometimes becoming the centre of the nationalist discourse with geographical issues such as territorial organization or regional knowledge. Therefore, we can distinguish three extensive historical periods in this evolution. In the first place, the origins and the first developments that took place between 1875 and 1939. This historical period starts with the monarchic restoration after the First Spanish Republic, and ends with the Spanish Civil war that concluded the Second Republican period.
