First, it aims to establish stage discharge relations in data-sparse regions in the lower Ewaso Ng’rio Basin in Kenya, and secondly, it proceeds to a weak point analysis along the main rivers of the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland. Regardless of their geographical distance, for both re- gions with their respective issues a hydrodynamic 1D simulations were conducted with the software Basement, providing simulations of river flow based on measured cross sections. In arid regions water scarcity is becoming a threat to more and more people. The Ewaso Ng’rio Basin (64 000 km2), located around the Mount Kenya is subjected to increasing pres- sure on water resources because of rising demands for irrigation, domestic purposes, and livestock in the upper basin. In the lower basin, users suffer from even more pronounced water scarcity, because they have secondary access to the rivers. Research on hydrological processes is limited since gauging stations (RGS) were missing up to this study. In order to overcome that limitation, this study aims to establish stage-discharge relations for four sites in the lower Ewaso Ng’iro Basin by relying on newly installed RGS providing water level data.

Box 1125-30100, Eldoret, Kenya Our gratitude goes to the University of Kabianga for partially funding this research study, besides keeping a track of it Abstract For years, extra-terrestrial impact cratering was esoteric. However, impacts have become very important, mainly because they have been identified as the likely immediate cause of dinosaur extinction. Impact cratering by extra-terrestrial bodies including asteroids comets and meteorites is an important geologic process, not only for the minerals that it forms, but also because of the knowledge that it is dangerous to mankind and life on earth. There is also the fact that extra-terrestrial impact crater building is a continuous process that may be going on even this very minute, somewhere in the universe. Consequently, the earth, just like other members of the solar system is targeted by extra-terrestrial falling objects. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of impact cratering on Kenya’s environment, with focus on Silali basin. Silali basin is a depression that is found to the north of Lake Baringo; around Kapedo town. It is suspected to be an Extra –Terrestrial Impact Crater (ETIC).

    NORSK TIDSSKRIFT FOR MISJONSVITENSKAP 3/2013 131 Lucas Pkiech – violent political rebel or Christian spiritual leader? A sketch of events in the life of a controversial figure in Pokot history. ERLING LUNDEBY Introduction The events being dealt with here took place in present day West Pokot District of Rift Valley Province, in Western Kenya. A crucial date in recent Pokot history is April 24th, 1950. On that fateful afternoon Lucas Pkiech, and some three hundred of his followers clashed with the colonial Kenya Government police troops, killing three European officers and an African policeman at Kollowa in East Baringo District. The immediate government crackdown and ensuing eight to ten years has made a deep impact on Pokot social and religious life. Hundreds were detained and imprisoned. Many never returned home. Numerous children lost one or both parents. Families were split on how to deal with the contentious issues. Some 132 NORSK TIDSSKRIFT FOR MISJONSVITENSKAP 3/2013 followed; others rejected Lucas outright. Some cooperated with the authorities; others defied the government. And others tried to do both at the same time. When this painful period came to an end, nobody wanted to raise the issues again. Most Pokot simply wanted to be left alone in peace – which they basically were until the early 1980’s. Detention policies that were generally set in place by the colonial government in Kenya, and in Kikuyu particularly, have recently become clear. Elements of those policies and punishments were also utilized to quell rebellious elements in Pokot.1 Like the Kikuyu, many of the Pokot people were severely traumatized.
