Modelling Flooding Sites Around River Niger Area of Onitsha Town Nigeria Using Remote Sensing and GIS Application Dr Sylvanus Iro, Dr C.E Ezedike
International Journal of Scientific & Engineering Research Volume 11, Issue 2, February-2020 1027 ISSN 2229-5518 Title; Modelling Flooding sites around River Niger area of Onitsha town Nigeria using Remote Sensing and GIS Application Dr Sylvanus Iro, Dr C.E Ezedike Abstract; Increasing frequency and severity of flooding have caused tremendous damage in Onitsha area of Nigeria, requiring more efficient and effective way to reduce the risk and damage people face. In this study, the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of the study area was used in consideration of terrain's influence on flooding of the town. The Compound Topographic Index (CTI) of the area was calculated to extract areas that represent wetness, which shows areas liable to flooding. The DEM was further queried to identify the part of the town that will be flooded whenever River Niger rises to 5 metres above the current level. The result shows that of the 1226610m2 of the study area, flooding will inundate area approximately to 2400m2, representing 0.47% of the DEM cells of the total study area. The slope map indegrees identified areas with more than 890 to be safe from flood inundation when the river rises and areas less than 890 to be areas liable to flooding. The analysis of this model shows that the proposed model can be a valuable tool that will guide city planners to avoid areas that are liable to flooding being used as residential or commercial purposes and for minimising damages from flooding. If you’d rather spot the Big Five without professional help, do a self-drive safari in Pi- lanesberg National Park. The most accessible park in the country is cheaper than Madikwe, and still has 7000 animals packed into its extinct volcano confines. Plus it’s less than three hours’ drive from Jo’burg. When you’ve had your fill betting on finding rhino, switch to cards at the opulent Sun City casino complex down the road. The final component of the province’s big attraction trifecta is the southern hemisphere’s answer to Las Vegas: a shame- lessly gaudy, unabashedly kitsch and downright delicious place to pass an afternoon. Madikwe, Pilanesberg and Sun City may be the North-West Province’s heavyweight at- tractions, but there are more here than the province’s ‘Big Three’. -

Several cladograms using the complete species sample, but obtained with different weightings, are presented. Local studies were also carried out to provide possible alternate topologies. The deep nodes of the trees were unstable and were never supported, but most of the superficial nodes were stable and robust. The results therefore provide support for a generic classification of the subfamily. The large genus Eurytoma – which includes about half of the described species of the subfamily – proved to be polyphyletic, and is redefined in a nar- rowed sense using putative synapomorphies. Bruchophagus and Prodecatoma were similarly redefined. The genera Philolema and Aximopsis are reconsidered and defined in a broader concept. A number of the species presently included in Eurytoma were transferred to these genera. Finally, 22 new generic synonymies are proposed and 33 spe- cies are transferred. The study also demonstrates that the Eurytomidae are polyphyletic. -

The population size, abundance and distribution of the Critically Endangered Hirola Antelope (Beatragus hunteri) in Arawale National Reserve, Northeastern, Kenya. This paper outlines the spatial distribution, population size, habitat preferences and factors causing the decline of Hirola antelope in Arawale National Reserve (ANR) in Garissa and Ijara districts, north eastern Kenya. The reserve covers an area of 540Km2. The objectives of the study were to gather baseline information on hirola distribution, population size habitat preferences and human activities impacting on its existence. A sampling method using line transect count was used to collect data used to estimate the distribution of biological populations (Norton-Griffiths, 1978). Community scouts collected data using Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and recorded on standard datasheets for 12 months. Transect walks were done from 6.00Am to 10.00Am every 5th day of the month. The data was entered into a geo-database and analysed using Arcmap, Ms Excel and Access. The results indicate that the population of hirola in Arawale National Reserve were 69 individuals comprising only 6% of the total population in the natural geographic range of hirola estimated to be 1,167 individuals. It also revealed that hirola prefer open bushes and grasslands. The decline of the Hirola on its natural range is due to a combination of factors, including, habitat loss and degradation, competition with livestock, poaching and drought.
