ENGLISH 1. It involves the showcasing of classic and vintage cars and motorcycles coupled with live music and nonstop entertainment for children. It takes place at the Nairobi Race Course every year in the month of September. This festival, organized by the Alfa Romeo owners club, began in California in 1910 and in Kenya twenty years later. It is rated as the most prestigious and varied event of its type in the world. It showcases the beauty and uniqueness of the old—school classic and also of some of the new motor products. Over time, it has attracted entries from Australia, England, Germany, Mauritius, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and Uganda. This event, termed as "all about style and history," has entries of vehicle models made as early as the 1920s. It is only in this festival that we get to see cars that we only see in movies and would probably never ride on the Kenyan roads. The proud owners of the various vehicles and motorcycles delight in driving their well— prepared cars in front of the crowded racecourse grandstands. A classic car and motorcycle sale is usually held in the racecourse prior to this festival for cars made some decades back. This oers a good chance for owners of unwanted cars and motorcycles to sell them to enthusiasts. This event provides our nation with a platform to showcase Kenya in the global context— not only as a holiday destination with wildlife and beaches—but also as one that organizes events of international standing. This great, one—day event ends with crowning the winners in the various categories. There is an overall winner and winners in other makes classied according to the year of make. The assessment starts with a check on the underside, which is followed by checks on external nish, interiors, and engines. She reasoned that some of the antique cars could never be driven on the poor roads of Kenya. Well, she was right—most of the Kenyan roads are in a poor state. She was shocked, however, to see the number of spectators who turned up to grace the occasion. Kenyans love cars. If only the country had the technical capabilities and the huge capital required to start its own car manufacturing factory, then the most technically developed cars would be imported from Kenya. We even had our rst 'All Kenyan' car in 1986, but unfortunately, it broke down after exactly a quarter of an hour at a maximum speed of twenty-one kilometers per hour. To the new generation, Kenyatta Day will remain a historic public holiday. The new constitution has renamed the holiday to "Heroes' Day." For the last forty- one years, the day commemorated the day that the rst president was released from prison after completing his seven—year sentence alongside seven others for allegedly being a ring leader of an underground sect. Many scholars have argued that the event did not deserve to be a national holiday. The men had denied their involvement in the guerrilla warfare that nally brought the white man down. This is an attempt to write the story of Scripture translations in Kenya. The story started in 1845 when J.L. There were many problems during the pioneer days. Translators did not know well enough the language into which they were to translate, nor could they get dependable help from their illiterate and semi literate converts.

IOSR Journal Of Humanities And Social Science (IOSR-JHSS) Volume 24, Issue 5, Ser. 9 (May. 2019) 54-61 e-ISSN: 2279-0837, p-ISSN: 2279-0845. www.iosrjournals.org Gender Dimensions in Emerging African Music Genres: A Case of Kenyan Local Hip Hop Pamela N.Wanjala Shamberere Technical Training Institute P.o Box 1316, Kakamega, Kenya Abstract: The question of gender bias is now seen as a major challenge in almost every discipline that deals with human behavior, cognition, institutions, society and culture. Therefore, this paper was an attempt to investigate gender dimensions in the emerging African genres; a case study of local hip hop songs in Kenya. It discussed the extent to which hip hop language is gender biased. It focused on the popular local hip hop songs and video images that occur with the songs. The study used the Social Semiotic Theory in the theoretical framework. Ten hip hop songs and ten video excerpts were purposively selected for analysis. The hip hop songs were coded according to the name of the artist and year of production. The data was analyzed under three sections: Linguistic analysis, Image analysis and Gender analysis. The study revealed that indeed there is gender bias in the language of the favourite youth culture. This was revealed in the lexis that distinguishes gender, in the syntactic analysis and also in the image analysis. It was found that in hip hop music, men tend to be regarded higher in terms of roles, occupation and general human traits like strength and control than women. The study therefore recommends that radio and television stations, and other advertising agencies should join the battle for women liberation by using gender sensitive language and focusing on positive and constructive societal changes in terms of gender roles.

POLICY BRIEF October 2020 Outcomes of the EU Horizon 2020 DAFNE PROJECT The Omo-Turkana River Basin Progress towards cooperative frameworks KEY POLICY MESSAGES The OTB has reached a stage of pivotal importance for future development; the time to establish a cooperative framework on water governance is now. Transparency and accountability must be improved in order to facilitate the sharing of data and information, increasing trust and reducing the perception of risk. Benefit-sharing which extends beyond energy could enhance regional integration and improve sustainable development within the basin . THE OMO-TURKANA RIVER BASIN potential for hydropower and irrigation schemes that are, if scientifically and equitably managed, crucial to lift millions within and outside the basin out of extreme poverty; this has led to transboundary cooperation in recent years. This policy brief is derived from research conducted under the €5.5M four-year EU Horizon 2020 and Swiss funded ‘DAFNE’ project which concerns the promotion of integrated and adaptive water resources management, explicitly addressing the WEF Nexus and aiming to promote a sustainable economy in regions where new infrastructure and expanding The Omo-Turkana River Basin (OTB) – for the agriculture has to be balanced with social, purposes of the DAFNE Project – comprises of economic and environmental needs. The project two main water bodies: the Omo River in takes a multi- and interdisciplinary approach to Ethiopia and Lake Turkana which it drains into. the formation of a decision analytical While the Omo River lies entirely within Ethiopian territory, Lake Turkana is shared by framework (DAF) for participatory and both Kenya and Ethiopia, with the majority of integrated planning, to allow the evaluation of Lake Turkana residing within Kenya.

A CONVERSATION WITH DANCE HISTORY: MOVEMENT AND MEANING IN THE CULTURAL BODY A Dissertation Submitted to The Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY By Seónagh Odhiambo January, 2009 © by Seónagh Odhiambo 2009 All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT A Conversation with Dance History: Movement and Meaning in the Cultural Body Seónagh Odhiambo Doctor of Philosophy Temple University, 2009 Doctoral Advisory Committee Chair: Dr. Kariamu Welsh This study regards the problem of a binary in dance discursive practices, seen in how “world dance” is separated from European concert dance. A close look at 1930s Kenya Luo women’s dance in the context of “dance history” raises questions about which dances matter, who counts as a dancer, and how dance is defined. When discursive practices are considered in light of multicultural demographic trends and globalisation the problem points toward a crisis of reason in western discourse about how historical origins and “the body” have been theorised: within a western philosophical tradition the body and experience are negated as a basis for theorising. Therefore, historical models and theories about race and gender often relate binary thinking whereby the body is theorised as text and history is understood as a linear narrative. An alternative theoretical model is established wherein dancers’ processes of embodying historical meaning provide one of five bases through which to theorise. The central research questions this study poses and attempts to answer are: how can I illuminate a view of dance that is transhistorical and transnational? How can I write about 1930s Luo women in a way that does not create a case study to exist outside of dance history? Research methods challenge historical materialist frameworks for discussions of the body and suggest insight can be gained into how historical narratives operate with coercive power—both in past and present—by examining how meaning is conceptualised and experienced.

Historically, the lake’s level has been subject to natural fluctuations in response to the vicissitudes of climate, with the inflow of water broadly matching the amount lost through evaporation (as the lake basin has no outflow). The lake’s major source of water, Ethiopia’s Omo River is being developed with a series of major hydropower dams and irrigated agricultural schemes, in particular sugar and other crop plantations.

River Conveyance Analysis in a Data Sparse and a Data Rich Region: Case Studies in Kenya and Switzerland Master’s Thesis Faculty of Science University of Bern presented by Danielle Huser 2016 Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Rolf Weingartner Institute of Geography and Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research Co-Supervisor: Dr. Andreas Zischg Institute of Geography and Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research Advisor: Dr. Hanspeter Liniger Institute of Geography i Abstract This master thesis addresses two cases studies with rather different initial condition. First, it aims to establish stage discharge relations in data-sparse regions in the lower Ewaso Ng’rio Basin in Kenya, and secondly, it proceeds to a weak point analysis along the main rivers of the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland. Regardless of their geographical distance, for both re- gions with their respective issues a hydrodynamic 1D simulations were conducted with the software Basement, providing simulations of river flow based on measured cross sections. In arid regions water scarcity is becoming a threat to more and more people. The Ewaso Ng’rio Basin (64 000 km2), located around the Mount Kenya is subjected to increasing pres- sure on water resources because of rising demands for irrigation, domestic purposes, and livestock in the upper basin. In the lower basin, users suffer from even more pronounced water scarcity, because they have secondary access to the rivers. Research on hydrological processes is limited since gauging stations (RGS) were missing up to this study. In order to overcome that limitation, this study aims to establish stage-discharge relations for four sites in the lower Ewaso Ng’iro Basin by relying on newly installed RGS providing water level data.

http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/rj.v1i1S.3D The Estimation of Lake Naivasha Area Changes Using of Hydro-Geospatial Technologies A. Ruhakana Soil and Water Management Research Program Rwanda Agriculture Board, Huye, Rwanda [email protected] Abstract: Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information System (GIS) were proved as new technology to intervene in monitoring, managing and protecting environmental resources among others lake and water reservoir are mostly anxious resources. The objective of the study was to estimate the surface area change of the lake Naivasha using RS, GIS techniques and hydrological modeling for the lake water balance. Landat images Thematic Mapper/Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (TM/ETM+) taken respectively in the same month of January 1986; 1995; 2003 and 2010 were the input data used to assess the different changes of the lake area on one hand. on other hand the spread sheet data set helped to build the hydrological model to estimate the long term lake Level fluctuation, the rainfall versus evaporation as in flow and out flow from the lake. The lake volume showed the dynamic of ground water to simulate the long-term fluctuation of the lake level. The lake area changes from the model were calculated from the spread sheet input data from 1986 to 2003 while the lake area changes from the Landsat images were calculated from 1986 to 2010. The comparative results from the area lake changes both from Landsat images and hydrological model confirmed the correlation results, 45.72 Km2 or 32.03 % in 2010 for the Landsat while the hydrological model estimated to 12km2 or 8% area reduction in 2003.
