  • Pengorbanan Tokoh Melayu Dikenang (BH 27/06/2000)
Tidak ketinggalan Tan Sri Syed Jaafar Albar, Tan Sri Zainun Munsyi Sulaiman, Tan Sri Fatimah Hashim, Tan Sri Aishah Ghani, Dr Abd Rahman Talib, Tan Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, Tan Sri Sulaiman Ninam Shah, Tun Syed Nasir, Abd Aziz Ishak dan Datuk Ahmad Badawi Abdullah Fahim.

The Defence of Ethnic Identity in Malaysia A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in International Relations and Security Studies at The University of Waikato by Melanie Jones-Leaning The University of Waikato 2010 Abstract The changing dynamics of interstate conflict in the post-Cold War environment led scholars to debate the relevance of established security theory. While traditionalists maintained that the state-centric theory should retain its primacy, others argued for a security agenda, not only broadened or widened to include other sectors, but one deepened or extended to include the individual and larger societal groupings as referent objects of security. In the 1990s, the Copenhagen Peace Research Institute developed a reformulated and expanded security agenda which recognized five dimensions of security – political, military, economic, environmental and societal.

Abdul Razak Hussein and Mahathir Mohamad’s contributions and leadership, especially in the nation-state’s development and modernisation, are well-recognised by Malaysians. They referred to Razak as the Development Father while Mahathir is known as the Father of Modernisation. Their leaderships’ effectiveness is also evident in their outstanding achievements based on the policies and actions during their tenure as the nation’s leaders. Therefore, this study aims to discuss the achievement-oriented aspects of Razak-Mahathir leadership in Malaysia’s nation-state development. A qualitative historical descriptive design was used as the research methodology where the primary source of this study was the texts of the two prime ministers’ speeches.

  • Atuk Prime Minister
31/08/2003 Atuk Prime Minister By Fazli Ibrahim You can tell it's that time of the year again. Everything, from the mamak stall to your neighbour's gleaming Kancil, gets draped in the red, white and blue of the Jalur Gemilang. Switch on the TV and you get the big boys of the corporate world exhibiting their loyalty to the country in 30-second slots, miniature movies almost - some of them so good you can't help but shed a patriotic tear or two. Things may change - like the rainbow of costumes, uniforms and batik shirts paraded every year until recently, in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building in Kuala Lumpur. This year, the parade is in Putrajaya. But one thing remains - we never tire of watching that grainy black and white film clip of the momentous morning on August 31, 1957, when the country's first Prime Minister, Tengku Abdul Rahman Putra Al Haj, proclaimed the magic word - "Merdeka". Today marks the 46th anniversary of that morning, and during the period, Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, Tun Hussein Onn and Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad have followed in Tengku's footsteps. We remember Tengku, Tun Razak and Tun Hussein with fondness, and are grateful for their contribution towards making what Malaysia is today. We are thankful for Dr Mahathir's leadership, under which the nation has acquired vision, direction and self-belief. Yet, ordinary Malaysians rarely if ever get to see the private person in these individuals, the man behind the veil of high office and authority that comes with being the Prime Minister, the leader of the nation.

Ph.D. August 2004. Telecommunications Managing the Content of Malaysian Television Drama: Producers, Gatekeepers and the Barisan Nasional Government (303 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Drew McDaniel Abstract: The purpose of this dissertation is to describe and analyze how drama television content is managed in Malaysia. By looking at the production process of local drama television programming, this study examines the interactions among the three major players – the Barisan Nasional regime, the major television networks and independent producers – who are responsible for shaping its content. Three research methods are used for this study: in-depth interviewing, the informal conversational interview and documentary research. Between June 2001 and November 2002, 32 interviewees participated in this research. The research finds that the Malaysian drama television producer’s ability to generate program content is constrained by the Barisan Nasional regime. Three observations are made to outline the power relationship between the government and the television industry. First, the government often encourages television producers to make drama programs with the theme of friendship and goodwill (muhibah) among different ethnic communities in order to nurture racial harmony.

  • THE NEW ECONOMIC POLICY and the UNITED MALAYS NATIONAL ORGANIZATION —With Special Reference to the Restructuring of Malaysian Society—
The Developing Economies, XXXV-3 (September 1997): 209–39 THE NEW ECONOMIC POLICY AND THE UNITED MALAYS NATIONAL ORGANIZATION —With Special Reference to the Restructuring of Malaysian Society— TAKASHI TORII INTRODUCTION N 1990, Malaysia duly completed its twenty-year New Economic Policy (NEP) which was launched in 1971. Though the NEP has been described as I an “economic” policy, its contents and implementation processes show that it went far beyond the scope of economic policy packages. In fact, policies in such noneconomic areas as education, language, culture, and religion have been formu- lated and implemented in close relationships with it. Consequently, the NEP has exerted major influences not only on Malaysia’s economy but on Malaysian society as a whole. From the point of view of the NEP’s stated objective, namely, “ to lift up the economic and social status of Malays,” the NEP has achieved signal successes, such as the creation of a Malay middle class and Malay entrepreneurs, most notably the new Malay business groups.1 A number of both positive and negative evaluations have been made about the NEP, which has had such a major impact on Malaysian society.2 These studies generally identify two basic characteristics of the NEP. –––––––––––––––––––––––––– This paper is part of the fruits of the research and investigation I conducted in Malaysia in 1991–93 as a visiting research fellow at the National University of Malaysia (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia— UKM). I wish to express my gratitude to the Institute of Developing Economies for sending me out as its research fellow, the National University of Malaysia for accepting and helping me, and the UMNO Research Bureau and the New Straits Times Research Centre for giving me the opportunity to use their valuable archives.
