Emily Jacir: Europa 30 Sep 2015 – 3 Jan 2016 Large Print Labels and Interpretation Galleries 1, 8 & 9
Emily Jacir: Europa 30 Sep 2015 – 3 Jan 2016 Large print labels and interpretation Galleries 1, 8 & 9 1 Gallery 1 Emily Jacir: Europa For nearly two decades Emily Jacir has built a captivating and complex artistic practice through installation, photography, sculpture, drawing and moving image. As poetic as it is political, her work investigates movement, exchange, transformation, resistance and silenced historical narratives. This exhibition focuses on Jacir’s work in Europe: Italy and the Mediterranean in particular. Jacir often unearths historic material through performative gestures and in-depth research. The projects in Europa also explore acts of translation, figuration and abstraction. (continues on next page) 2 At the heart of the exhibition is Material for a film (2004– ongoing), an installation centred around the story of Wael Zuaiter, a Palestinian intellectual who was assassinated outside his home in Rome by Israeli Mossad agents in 1972. Taking an unrealised proposal by Italian filmmakers Elio Petri and Ugo Pirro to create a fi lm about Zuaiter’s life as her starting point, the resulting installation contains documents, photographs, and sound elements, including Mahler’s 9th Symphony as one of the soundtracks to the work. linz diary (2003), is a performance by Jacir captured by one of the city’s live webcams that photographed the artist as she posed by a fountain in a public square in Linz, Austria, at 6pm everyday, over 26 days. During the performance Jacir would send the captured webcam photo of herself to her email list along with a small diary entry. In the series from Paris to Riyadh (drawings for my mother) (1998–2001), a collection of white vellum papers dotted with black ink are delicately placed side by side. -

An Exemplary Case: the Garden of the Finzi-Continis by Giorgio Bassani
FROM THE NOVEL TO THE FILM .. Simona Messina LANGUAGE FOR INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATION: LINKING INTERDISCIPLINARY PERSPECTIVES, Vol. 3, 2020, pp. 67-78 https://doi.org/10.22364/lincs.2020.06 FROM THE NOVEL TO THE FILM: AN EXEMPLARY CASE: THE GARDEN OF THE FINZI-CONTINIS BY GIORGIO BASSANI SIMONA MESSINA University of Salerno, Italy Abstract. The purpose of this paper is to find out whether a screenplay can remain faithful to the original literary text. The passage from a literary work to an audiovisual product always involves three authors: the writer, the screenwriter and the film director. There are, then, three different texts (literary work, screenplay and film), each with its own grammar and narrative techniques. As an example, we have chosen The Garden of the Finzi-Continis by Giorgio Bassani. The analysis of the transition from text to film focuses on two aspects of the transition: changes of the narrative structure and the relationship between literary and cinematographic discourse. As regards the first point, it must be taken into account that it is impossible to achieve the exact reproduction of the narrative sequences; therefore, some of these will have to be excluded, others changed and others added to provide further information. The second point concerns the comparison of the novel’s language, the screenplay and the film, analyzing some of the most emblematic scenes of the story. In conclusion, the screen adaptation of a literary work must be regarded as a process capable of transforming literary matter into filmic matter. Key words: film adaptation, script, screenplay, language comparison, dialogues INTRODUCTION The subject of this paper is the film adaptation of a literary work. -
The Italian Literature of the Axis War (1944–1974) and the Collective Memories of World War II
Royal Holloway, University of London School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures Italian Studies The Italian Literature of the Axis War (1944–1974) and the Collective Memories of World War II by Guido Bartolini Supervisor: Prof Giuliana Pieri Thesis Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Royal Holloway, July 2018 2 Declaration of Authorship I Guido Bartolini hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: ______________________ Date: _______________________ 3 Abstract This thesis analyses a selection of texts that are part of the Italian literature of the Axis War, written Between 1945 and 1975, examining the relationship between literary representations and the Italian collective memory discourse of World War Two. This study Builds on a number of theoretical frameworks, combining memory studies, historiography, thematic criticism, and narratology, which are used in order to explore the relations Between literature and memory narratives aBout the past. As a result of this interdisciplinary approach, the analysis centres on those figures of repetition (topoi, themes, masterplots) that characterise, at different levels of complexity, the texts of the corpus and that have been taken as points of connection between literary representations and collective memory narratives. Through the study of the most recurrent tropes across the corpus, this thesis pinpoints the existence of dominant structures that affected the literary representation of the Axis War, which have strong links to the ways in which the Second World War and the Fascist past have been narrativised in postwar Italy.
