Hence the need to design a database of the Italian alimurgic flora: AlimurgITA. Only strictly alimurgic taxa were chosen, excluding casual alien and cultivated ones. The collected data come from an archive of 358 texts (books and scientific articles) from 1918 to date, chosen with appropriate criteria. For each taxon, the part of the plant used, the method of use, the chorotype, the biological form and the regional distribution in Italy were considered. The 1103 taxa of edible flora already entered in the database equal 13.09% of Italian flora. The most widespread family is that of the Asteraceae (20.22%); the most widely used taxa are Cichorium intybus and Borago officinalis. The not homogeneous regional distribution of WEPs (maximum in the south and minimum in the north) has been interpreted. Texts published reached its peak during the 2001–2010 decade. Description: C. calcitrapa is an erect, bushy and spiny biannual herb that is sometimes behaves as an annual or short-lived perennial. It grows to 1 m tall. Young stems and leaves have fine, cobweb-like hairs that fall off over time. Older stems are much-branched, straggly, woody, sparsely hairy, without wings or spines and whitish to pale green. Lower leaves are deeply divided while upper leaves are generally narrow and undivided. Rosette leaves are deeply divided and older rosettes have a circle of spines in the centre. This is the initial, infertile, flower head. Numerous flowers are produced on the true flowering stem and vary from lavender to a deep purple colour. Bracts end in a sharp, rigid white to yellow spines. Seed is straw coloured and blotched with dark brown spots. The pappus is reduced or absent. Bristles are absent. Such systems also undergo a large range of modifications in order to fulfill other ‚cryptical‘ functions, e.g. positioning of innovation buds, vegetative cloning, and vege- tative dispersal. Seedlings should always be the point of departure for any investigation into the structure of geophilous systems. This is because in the ability to survive of geophilous plants it is of primary importance that innovation buds can reach a safe position in the soil by the time the first period hostile to vegetation commences. Our analysis of such systems thus focused on examining the development of 34 species of the Apiaceae, beginning with their germination. Independent of life-form and life-span, all species exhibit noticeable terminal bud movement with the aid of contractile organs. Movement was found to be at least 5 mm, reaching a maximum of 45 mm. All species exhibit a noticeable contraction of the primary root. In most cases the contraction phenomenon also occurs in the hypocotyl, and some species show contraction of their lateral and / or adventitious roots. Analysis of movement shows the functional importance of pulling the inno- vation buds down into the soil. -

Some of them are still appreciated and consumed, in other cases their consumption is only in the memory of the elderly people and the knowledge about these species is at risk of disappearing. Within the framework of the Spanish project ‘The genetic resources of edible underutilized species: field collection, multiplication and conservation in the Germplasm Bank’, during 2009 various collecting expeditions across Aragón, a region of 47720 km 2 in the northeast of Spain, were performed with the following aims: 1) To compile information about wild species used for eating, 2) To locate these species within their natural habitat, 3) To classify them taxonomically, 4) To obtain some seeds and maintain them under long-term storage conditions. IDENTIFIERS PLANT IDENTIFICATION A total of 31 personal interviews have been carried out. One of the main problems of fish is the short shelf life, especially when it is processed as in the case of burgers. The use of edible coating is an interesting strategy to extend the quality and safety of the product, reducing the need for artificial preservatives. This study evaluated the use of chitosan-based edible film formulated with sea fennel plant and sea fennel extracts. The analyses showed than the use of edible film extended the shelf life of fish burgers regardless of the incorporation of sea fennel mainly associated to the gas barrier properties and selective permeability of the film applied to the fish surface. -

ANUALLY constructed keys for identification of plants leave much to be desired. Keys Mto the Asteraceae of Egypt are no exception and depend largely on floral minutiae while vegetative morphology is a much richer source of characters suitable for key construction. Inspection of some 3000 specimens showed that the most obvious feature of the plants is the presence or absence of spines on leaves, leaf axils, stem internodes, margins of stem wings and phyllaries. This feature was selected to divide species of this family into two main groups: spiny and spineless. Nomenclature of all taxa was updated and those with names reduced to synonyms of others were eliminated. This article deals only with the 65 species belonging to 20 genera of the first group. A total of 51 characters describing variation in spine distribution and other characters of vegetative morphology were recorded for each of the 65 spiny species and the key-generating program DELTA was applied to the data matrix. The result is a much improved automated key, a detailed description of every species in terms of the entire set of 51 characters, and the same description but in terms of the serial numbers assigned to these characters and their states. -

Gathered food plants (GFPs) (wild and weeds) are crucial for under- standing traditional Mediterranean diets. Combining open interviews and free–listing ques- tionnaires, we identified 215 GFP items, i.e., 53 fungi and 162 from 154 vascular plant species. The variation in frequency and in salience among the items follows a rectangular hyperbola. Highly salient species were Silene vulgaris (Moench) Garcke, Scolymus hispani- cus L., and Pleurotus eryngii (DC.: Fr.) Quélet. Salience and frequency showed no correlation with the expected health benefits of each species. Regional frequency in the Mediter- ranean and local frequency are directly related. Thus, local food plants are much less “local” than expected. Different types of culinary preparations provide the most information in the cluster analysis of variables.
