However, many medicinal plants are difficult to identify when they are sold as roots, powders or bark. DNA barcoding involves using a short, agreed-upon region of a genome as a unique identifier for species– ideally, as a global standard. Research Question: What is the functionality, efficacy and accuracy of the use of barcoding for identifying root material, using medicinal plant roots sold by herbalists in Marrakech, Morocco, as a test dataset. Methodology: In total, 111 root samples were sequenced for four proposed barcode regions rpoC1, psbA-trnH, matK and ITS. Sequences were searched against a tailored reference database of Moroccan medicinal plants and their closest relatives using BLAST and Blastclust, and through inference of RAxML phylograms of the aligned market and reference samples. Principal Findings: Sequencing success was high for rpoC1, psbA-trnH, and ITS, but low for matK. Searches using rpoC1 alone resulted in a number of ambiguous identifications, indicating insufficient DNA variation for accurate species-level identification. Combining rpoC1, psbA-trnH and ITS allowed the majority of the market samples to be identified to genus level. -

CURRICULUM VITAE – ORIANE HIDALGO Research line: The connecting thread of my research is to uncover patterns and processes of genome evolution responsible for plant diversification, through an integrated approach including evolutionary-developmental biology, phylogenetics and cytogenetics. I am particularly interested in studying the origin and diversification of plant reproductive morphologies across angiosperms from the evo-devo and genomic perspectives. My research concentrates on the changes in floral symmetry and inflorescence complexity in Papaveraceae and the Asteraceae representatives displaying secondary heads (=syncephalia). My other main research line focuses on the evolutionary significance of the extraordinary diversity of plant genomes (i.e. size, organisation, composition and dynamics), covering a wide array of plant groups including angiosperms, gymnosperms and pteridophytes. ORIGINAL SCIENTIFIC PAPER | 17 An Ethnobotanical Analysis on Wild Edible Plants of the Turkish Asteraceae Taxa İsmail ŞENKARDEŞ (✉) Gizem BULUT Ahmet DOĞAN Ertan TUZLACI Summary Asteraceae (Compositae) is one of the biggest families in the Flora of Turkey as in the World. Also, it is one of the most important families in which many popular plants are used as food and recreational tea in Turkey. The aim of this study is to make an ethnobotanical analysis on the wild edible plants of the Asteraceae family in Turkey, according to our investigations and scientific literature records. This study is based on local ethnobotanical investigations. The information about the plants was obtained from the local people through open and semi-structured interviews. In the light of our investigations and the literature records, 43 genera (including 121 taxa) of Asteraceae (used for food, tea and other purposes) were determined. Among them, Scorzonera, Tragopogon, Cirsium, Centaurea, Onopordum, Taraxacum, Echinops, Achillea, Anthemis and Carduus are the most popular genera in the localities of Turkey. Crete in Spring 2018 Lead by Fiona Dunbar A Greentours Trip Report Friday 6th April Arrival After an early start at Gatwick, we arrived in Crete only a little late. Ian Hislop was on our flight, presumably on his way out to stay with his wife, author of such Cretan Aga sagas as ‘The Island’. Driving along, the countryside was markedly lush and green compared to some years. The Robinia pseudoacacia was dripping in white blossom, the Judas trees with pink. There were acres of yellow, and yellow and white, Chrysanthemum coronarium. We enjoyed a welcome but late lunch at a taverna in the village of Armeni instead. The saganaki or fried cheese was made with the cooks’ own freshly prepared, mild goats cheese. The garden centre next door was quite a pull, too! As we gained altitude we looked out over hills covered with fig, gorse, Quercus pubescens, Asphodeline aestivus and almost fluorescing lime green Giant Fennel, in between the groves of olives and small fields. Having been greeted by Herakles in Spili with glasses of cold water and quince in honey, we settled into our rooms. Some walked down the track below. There was a fine stand of tall purple broomrapes on the nasturtiums in Heracles garden. We reconvened in the breakfast room and strolled over the road to Costas and Maria’s taverna, almost hidden by trailing vines and flowers. Most of us tried the rabbit in lemon sauce – tender and tasty. It was Good Friday, and as I headed to bed I could hear a Scops Owl calling. -

In this study, three extracts of the aerial parts of Notobasis syriaca and Scolymus maculatus were prepared. Each extract was tested for antifungal activity against Rhizopus stolonifer (black mold), and its total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity were measured. As for these measurements, we report here a facile method that we developed. Our results show moderate antifungal activity for both plants extracts, notably high TPC and antioxidant capacities. We arrived at a sunny Larnaca airport where luggage retrieval was efficient, but there was a slight delay until we met our driver and luxury coach. The crossing from the Greek to the Turkish side was rather different this year, with checks for the first time on the Greek side. However, completing a visa form to enter the north was no longer required, so the whole process was rather quicker. A lovely cool drink awaited us at Bellapais Monastery Village Hotel, where the presence of several long- serving staff was as reassuring as ever, and we soon settled in to our delightful rooms. Even at dusk, the temperature was such as to permit our introductory meeting to take place outside the dining room next to the swimming pool, during which a Eurasian Scops Owl flew across, attracted by the calls of a second bird. The buffet dinner was hailed a big hit, and most of the group retired early after a fairly exhausting day. -
