KRAMARENKO Mykolaiv National Agrarian University, Paryzka Komuna St. 9, Mykolaiv, 54020, Ukraine (e-mail: [email protected]) ABSTRACT: Mechanisms which govern patterns of intra-specific vatiation in land snails were traced within areas of different size, using Brephulopsis cylindrica (Menke), Chondrula tridens (O. F. Müller), Xeropicta derbentina (Krynicki), X. krynickii (Krynicki), Cepaea vindobonensis (Férussac) and Helix albescens Rossmässler as examples. Morphometric shell variation, colour and banding pattern polymorphism as well as genetic polymorphism (allozymes and RAPD markers) were studied. The results and literature data were analysed in an attempt to link patterns to processes, with the following conclusions. Formation of patterns of intra- specific variation (initial processes of microevolution) takes different course at three different spatial scales. At micro-geographical scale the dominant role is played by eco-demographic characteristics of the species in the context of fluctuating environmental factors. At meso-geographical scale a special part is played by stochastic population-genetic processes. At macro-geographical scale more or less distinct clinal patterns are associated with basic macroclimatic -

Ekológia (Bratislava), Vol. 38, No. 4, p. 367–381, 2019. This paper examines the temporal dynamics of terrestrial mollusks of the Nikopol manganese ore basin technosols. The research was carried out at the Research Centre of the Dnipro Agrarian and Economic University in Pokrov (Ukraine). Sampling was carried out in 2012–2014 on four variants of artificial soil: formed on red-brown clays, on loess-like loams, on gray-green clays, and on humus-rich layer. The distribution of the number of individuals in a mollusk population was described by broken stick, Motomura, log-normal, Zipf, and Zipf-Mandelbrot models. It was shown that the series of models that best describe mollusk abundance distribution is specific for a particular species and technosols type and generally is invariant over time. Key words: land snails, technosols, distribution, population. Introduction Habitat is characterized by the availability of a certain range of resources and ecological con- ditions for a given species, which creates conditions to occupy, survive and reproduce in a given territory (Hall et al., 1997). -

Th e self-similar intrapopulational groups (demes) with sets of random (chaotic) and ranked (clinal) patterns of morphological characters were observed. It is argued that the self-similar elements lead to the forma- tion of spatial variability patterns with distinct fractal nature. When delegates gathered for the first ISEM meeting in Tivat in 2004 some of them were uncertain about this new venture and how it would work out. An International Symposium of Ecologists of Montenegro in a small, little known country on a rather specialist topic? This was something not attempted before. They needn’t have worried! These meetings have been marked by their friendliness and informality, in addition to providing a platform for the exchange of information. They have also been international, (not the “International participation” often advertised) with a good mix of people from all over the world, all of whom seemed to have got on well together. -

S. Kramarenko, A. S. Kramarenko, S. S., Kramarenko, A. S. — Th e cases of assortative mating are known in varied species of Gastropoda, however it is unclear how widely distributed this reproductive strategy is across the class. Th e data concerning land snails (Stylommatophora) are especially contradictory. By using two model species of stylommatophoran mollusks, Brephulopsis cylindrica (Menke, 1828) and Xeropicta derbentina (Krynicki, 1836), we conducted a long-term observation of their copulatory behavior in Southern Ukraine. In X. derbentina, a clear pattern of the positive assortative mating with respect to body size was found, whereas assortative mating in relation to shell banding polymorphism was revealed in 2 cases out of 7. B. cylindrica snails copulate with any available mate partner, regardless of its size. Key words: mate choice, assortative mating, Gastropoda, Brephulopsis cylindrica, Xeropicta derbentina. Introduction Brephulopsis cylindrica (Menke, 1828) is a xerophilic species of land snails widely distributed in the Crimea as well as in the northern coastal areas of the Azov and Black Seas (Vychalkovskaya, 2008; Balashov et al., 2013; Balashov, 2016). It inhabits mostly dry open biotopes and demonstrates a high tendency to sinan- tropization: the snails were found in urbanized habitats of Lvov (Sverlova, 1998), Kyiv (Vychalkovskaya & Kramarenko, 2008), Brest (Rabchuk & Zemoglyadchuk, 2011), Chișinău (Balashov et al., 2013 a) and Belgorod (Snegin et al., 2017). -
Intrapopulation Variation in Shell Morphological Traits and Banding Polymorphism of the Land Snail Cepaea Vindobonensis (Gastropoda; Pulmonata; Helicidae)

Accepted 13.10.2020 The main goal of this paper was to analyze intrapopulation variation of both morphological traits and shell banding polymorphism using the example of a continuous population (a metapopulation) of the land snail Cepaea vindobonensis (Férussac, 1821). A total of 14 samples of the land snail C. vindobonensis from a population located in the “Dubki” Park (Ukraine, Mykolayiv) were collected in May-July 2007. The land snail collection sites are divided into three areas by buildings and asphalt roads, indicated by the Latin letters A, B and C. The major diameter of shell (MJD), the minor diameter of shell (MID) and the shell height (SH) were measured with a digital calliper to the nearest 0.05 mm. Two shell shape indices (SF1 and SF2) were also computed. A high level of the intrapopulation variation of the land snail C. vindobonensis was found in our study. Significant differences between sample means were found for all shell traits and indices used (except for SF1), however, maximum difference was noted for SH and SF2 (in both cases: P < 0.001). -

FUNCTIONAL INTERRELATIONS BETWEEN CONCHOLOGICAL and ANATOMICAL CHARACTERS in STYLOMMATOPHORA (MOLLUSCA, GASTROPODA) Anatoly A
Characters in Stylommatophora (Mollusca) 269 Сборник трудов Зоологического музея МГУ им. М.В. Ломоносова Archives of Zoological Museum of Lomonosov Moscow State University Том / Vol. 54 Cтр. / Pр. 269–297 FUNCTIONAL INTERRELATIONS BETWEEN CONCHOLOGICAL AND ANATOMICAL CHARACTERS IN STYLOMMATOPHORA (MOLLUSCA, GASTROPODA) Anatoly A. Schileyko Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution, Russian Academy of Sciences; [email protected] Parameters of shells (shape, size) of stylommatophoran mollusks are determined by the history of the group, peculiarities of their food and con- ditions of life in different geological periods, as well as genetic nature. The history of Stylommatophora since the Paleozoic is briefl y discussed. It is assumed that one of the important factors determined the historical development of stylommatophorans were peculiarities of their food. The aperture is the main channel of communication of a mollusk with the outside world and any elements of the apertural structure are related, directly or indirectly, with the adaptation of animals to their environment. Therefore, special attention is paid in the article to the morphofunctional analysis of apertural structures. The main results of this analysis may be summarized by six basic conclusions. 1. The teeth in the aperture are represented by two categories that are designated as superfi cial and immerged. Superfi cial teeth are local thi cke- nings of the lip; immerged ones are natural result of narrowing of the last whorl at the fi nal stages of the shell formation. 2. Superfi cial teeth and lip serve basically for squeezing mucus from the mantle collar and the epiphragm formation. 3. Superfi cial teeth there are mostly in mollusks, that dig themselves into the soil to survive of dry season.
