When delegates gathered for the first ISEM meeting in Tivat in 2004 some of them were uncertain about this new venture and how it would work out. An International Symposium of Ecologists of Montenegro in a small, little known country on a rather specialist topic? This was something not attempted before. They needn’t have worried! These meetings have been marked by their friendliness and informality, in addition to providing a platform for the exchange of information. They have also been international, (not the “International participation” often advertised) with a good mix of people from all over the world, all of whom seemed to have got on well together. The aim was to learn more about the natural history and ecology of the Balkan area of Europe and especially Montenegro and at the same time give people the opportunity to see something of this beautiful country. Following Tivat we met in Kotor in 2006, a very special place, a world heritage site with an important fjord, a wonderful town with cobbled streets and an enormous history. ISEM 3 was held in Bijela, close to Herceg Novi, in 2008 and then in Budva. This year it has returned to Tivat. The format has remained largely the same – Plenary lectures from invited speakers, oral presentations and poster sessions with some ‘Round table’ discussion. The programme at each meeting has included sessions on the protection of the environment, bio and geodiversity, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, ecology of populations, agroecology, biospeleology and environmental education. Now we have reached ISEM5 and there is an opportunity to look back at the importance and success of these meetings. All of them have been important for different reasons. They have brought scientists together from different parts of the world to discuss their special interests and findings, often issues relevant to the Balkans, and through both formal and informal discussion, they have produced new ideas and collaborations for the future. As well as this, they have been useful in training young scientists to present their findings to a wider audience. We congratulate and thank Vladimir Pešić and his team for bringing us together in a relaxed atmosphere, making lasting friendships, giving us new ideas, and providing us with much new information. It was a bold move in the first place but the meetings have been efficiently organized and a great success. R. A. (Sandy) Baker. Member of the Scientific Committee. • Hibernacula of Barbastella Barbastellus in Ukraine: Distribution and Some Ecological Aspects
Vespertilio 16: 55–68, 2012 ISSN 1213-6123 Hibernacula of Barbastella barbastellus in Ukraine: distribution and some ecological aspects Andriy-Taras BASHTA Institute of Ecology of the Carpathians, Kozelnytska 4, Lviv 79026, Ukraine; atbashta@gmail. Com Abstract. The paper presents a study regarding the winter aggregations of the barbastelle bat (Barbastella barbastellus) in western Ukraine, based on data collected in natural underground spaces and artificial structures (abandoned mines, ancient monuments, military fortifications, etc.). Some parameters including the size and dynamics of winter aggregations, as well as microclimate conditions of hibernacula were investigated. The most numerous barbastelle hibernaculum has been found in the Tarakaniv fortress (Rivne region); the largest aggregation of the species consisted of ca. 950 individuals. The numbers of barbastelles in Ukraine seem stable or even increasing. In Central Europe the species is not threatened as seriously as it is in Western Europe. Distribution, hibernation, winter aggregations, conservation Introduction The barbastelle bat, Barbastella barbastellus (Schreber, 1774), is a Palearctic bat species. Its range stretches from the northern Morocco to Iran and from southern Scandinavia and Latvia to Greece (Wołoszyn & Bashta 2009). In Ukraine, the barbastelle is found from the western borders to the Dnieper river. The majority of records come from the western part of Ukraine and the Crimean Mts. (Kovalyova & Taraborkin 2001, Bashta & Potish 2007, Bashta 2009). The last assessment

The study of the Portuguese marine ichthyofauna has a long historical tradition, rooted back in the 18th Century. Here we present an annotated checklist of the marine fishes from Portuguese waters, including the area encompassed by the proposed extension of the Portuguese continental shelf and the Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ). The list is based on historical literature records and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history collections, together with new revisions and occurrences.

Marionina argentea (Michaelsen, 1889) was reported from a subterranean stream. Propappus volki Michaelsen, 1916, Rhyacodrilus coccineus (Vejdovský, 1876), and Cognettia sphagnetorum (Vejdovský, 1877) were found in epigean streams. Haplotaxis gordioides (Hartmann, 1821) appeared in both subterranean and epigean streams. The list of aquatic oligochaetes from Montenegro now encompasses 39 species. KRAMARENKO Mykolaiv National Agrarian University, Paryzka Komuna St. 9, Mykolaiv, 54020, Ukraine (e-mail: [email protected]) ABSTRACT: Mechanisms which govern patterns of intra-specific vatiation in land snails were traced within areas of different size, using Brephulopsis cylindrica (Menke), Chondrula tridens (O. F. Müller), Xeropicta derbentina (Krynicki), X. krynickii (Krynicki), Cepaea vindobonensis (Férussac) and Helix albescens Rossmässler as examples. Morphometric shell variation, colour and banding pattern polymorphism as well as genetic polymorphism (allozymes and RAPD markers) were studied. The results and literature data were analysed in an attempt to link patterns to processes, with the following conclusions. Formation of patterns of intra- specific variation (initial processes of microevolution) takes different course at three different spatial scales. At micro-geographical scale the dominant role is played by eco-demographic characteristics of the species in the context of fluctuating environmental factors. At meso-geographical scale a special part is played by stochastic population-genetic processes. At macro-geographical scale more or less distinct clinal patterns are associated with basic macroclimatic

The ichthyofauna list is 25 composed by 397 species very diversified in 2 superclass, 3 class, 35 orders, 139 1 1 families and 288 genus. The order Perciformes is the most diverse one with 37 families, 2 91 genus and 135 species. Gobiidae (19 species) and Sparidae (19 species) are the 3 richest families. Biogeographically, the Lusitanian group includes 203 species (51.1%), 4 followed by 149 species of the Atlantic (37.5%), then 28 of the Boreal (7.1%), and 17 5 of the African (4.3%) groups. Ekológia (Bratislava), Vol. 38, No. 4, p. 367–381, 2019. This paper examines the temporal dynamics of terrestrial mollusks of the Nikopol manganese ore basin technosols. The research was carried out at the Research Centre of the Dnipro Agrarian and Economic University in Pokrov (Ukraine). Sampling was carried out in 2012–2014 on four variants of artificial soil: formed on red-brown clays, on loess-like loams, on gray-green clays, and on humus-rich layer. The distribution of the number of individuals in a mollusk population was described by broken stick, Motomura, log-normal, Zipf, and Zipf-Mandelbrot models. It was shown that the series of models that best describe mollusk abundance distribution is specific for a particular species and technosols type and generally is invariant over time. Key words: land snails, technosols, distribution, population. Introduction Habitat is characterized by the availability of a certain range of resources and ecological con- ditions for a given species, which creates conditions to occupy, survive and reproduce in a given territory (Hall et al., 1997).
