Study Abroad Office http://studyabroad.leeds.ac.uk Subsidised Leeds Summer Schools 2015 Further Information and Application Guidance What is on offer? The Study Abroad Office is able to offer several subsidised summer school opportunities for University of Leeds students. A summer school is a fantastic way to gain an academic experience in another country for a shorter period of time, and can allow you to study subjects that you would be unable to take as part of your Leeds degree. While participation in a summer school will not count towards your Leeds degree in any way, it will still give you a valuable experience to put on your CV! The details of 2015 summer opportunities are listed at the end of this document. Eligibility Criteria In order to apply for a place on a subsidised Leeds summer school you must: 1. Have a minimum 2.2 average 2. Be a degree-seeking Undergraduate student not in your final year of study at Leeds 3. Be able to attend the summer programme for the full programme period Researching Your Options 1. Study Abroad Office VLE Organisation Student feedback from previous years can be found here. This feedback is particularly helpful in finding out more about accommodation options and costs. How to enrol: a) Using ‘Study Abroad’ as your search criteria, search from the VLE homepage for the study abroad organisation (not module). b) Select ‘enrol’ when you are presented with the drop down menu to the right of CJH00003. Don’t forget to select ‘submit’ on the following details screen. Go to the ‘Short Programme Opportunities’ section and then to the ‘Student Feedback’ folder. Often students will leave their contact details on these forms in which case you can contact them directly. 2. Partner University Website Look at the partner university’s main website to get a feel for academic specialities, campus life, and the local area. Many universities will also have a dedicated summer school section on their website with information specific to their summer programme. 3. Study Abroad Office Hours Pop into the Study Abroad Office for a chat. We’re open between 11am and 3pm, Monday to Friday throughout the year and are happy to talk to you about your summer school options. We are based on Level 11 of the Marjorie and Arnold Ziff Building 1 How to Apply You must first submit an application to the University of Leeds Study Abroad Office, as there are a limited number of subsidised places available. You must then be selected by the University of Leeds as a participant in order to qualify for one of these. Students should not apply directly to the partner university. You may list up to five summer schools in order of preference. Please consider your preferences very carefully before submitting them, as you may be selected for any of them. Do not assume that a high academic average will guarantee you your first or second choice and make sure you would be happy to go to any of your preferences. The deadline for applications is 3pm on Monday 16th February 2015. Application Documents Please submit the following documents to the Study Abroad Office in hard copy format by 3pm on Monday 16th February. The Study Abroad Office is open Monday – Friday, 11am – 3pm. 1. Initial Application Form This form provides all your details to the study abroad office. Please ensure that you enter your most up to date contact details as we may need to contact you urgently about your application. It also includes a reference section which must be signed by a member of staff e.g. personal tutor, lecturer, student support officer, school study abroad coordinator. 2. Supporting Statement All applicants must write a statement of no more than 300 words explaining your motives for wanting to take part in the programme. In your statement you may wish to consider the following points: What is it about completing a summer programme that interests you? What background knowledge do you have that you want to build on by participating in a summer programme? What do you expect to get out of the experience e.g. personal development, academic and/ or practical skills etc. 3. Your previous academic year’s grades. First years should submit details of any provisional marks achieved so far. Other students should obtain an official transcript from the Student Services Counter (free of charge). 4. Passport Copy We also ask you to submit a copy of the information page of your passport. This will help us to ensure we prepare the correct advice for you. We may also submit this copy to your host university if your application is successful. What Happens Next The Study Abroad Office Selection Committee will consider all applications submitted against the eligibility criteria, and the supporting statement will be examined with the following points in mind: Have you demonstrated a genuine interest in the programme? Have you demonstrated a commitment to developing skills and attributes through participating in the opportunities available to you during your time at the University of Leeds? Please see the Leeds for Life website for hints and tips (http://leedsforlife.leeds.ac.uk/) 2 You will be advised of the outcome of your application by email at the address given on the application by 5pm on Monday 23rd February 2015. You can indicate on your application whether you wish to be considered for a second round of selection for remaining places, should you not be allocated one of your initial preferences. The application deadline for remaining places will be 3pm on Friday 27th February 2015. Please note that neither opportunity in Hong Kong, nor the Japanese Language Summer Program at Akita University, Japan will be available in the second round due to the quick turnaround required in sending supporting application documentation to these host universities. Successful applicants will be sent further information and application forms by email, which will need to be completed and returned to the Study Abroad Office promptly by the given deadline to confirm your place on the summer school. This will usually involve making a direct application to your host university. Below are the approximate deadlines for each programme (these will be confirmed in your acceptance e-mail if you are successful in gaining a place). If at this stage you no longer wish to take up your place on the summer school please let us know as soon as possible. Due to the tight deadlines involved we will not be able to offer your place to another student so please do think carefully before applying for a summer school place. The final deadline for withdrawals is 20th April 2015 (withdrawing after this date will incur a £100 fee).
