The work is divided into six chapters. The first, after stating the source and meaning of the term ' Turanian % furnishes a general survey of the Turanian race, setting forth its origin, migrations, present dis- tribution, numbers, characteristics, language, religion, and civilization. The following chapters describe the five main branches of the Turanian people together with the subdivisions of each branch. Each chapter begins with a general characterization of the branch with which it deals. Then comes a detailed account of the tribes forming divisions of the main branch. Each is uniformly de- scribed with regard to its habitat, name, number, mode of life, characteristics, language, literature, religion, and history. This arrangement is intended to facilitate the comparison of the numerous tribes described in the Manual. -

Rosinko 1 Homoeroticism in the Early Ottoman Empire Grant Rosinko “In our time, the popularity of beardless youths, smooth-cheeked boys, and well- behaved lads, whose sweet beauty is apparent, exceeds the popularity [women] possessed of beauty and loveliness…Furthermore, smooth-cheeked lads are loving friends and companions to their masters both on campaign and at home. But, from that perspective, those moon faces of the female gender are neither constant friends nor close companions.” — Ottoman Poet Mustafa ‘Ali on Etiquette1 European travel accounts of the Ottoman Empire from the eighteen hundreds often remark on the moral depravity of sexual practices, especially of what is termed as “sodomy.” The observant English traveler Adolphus Slade, a naval officer who often wrote well informed, balanced and even empathetic accounts remarked with disgust “boys fetch a much higher price than girls for evident reasons: in the East, unhappily, they are also subservient to pleasure.”2 These narratives painted the Ottomans as sexually perverse creating the image of a morally deprived east. In the words of a U.S. naval officer Walter Colton, “The Turk’s morality flows from a different source.”3 By the time these encounters were taking place, Ottoman and European sexuality had greatly diverged, as is seen in the shock and condemnation expressed by European travelers. Bu seferler oğlu Cuci Han’ın kumandasında Cebe ve Sübütey Noyanların yardımlarıyla Moğol Devleti’nin Kuzey Batısı’na yapıldı. Seferler başarıyla tamamlanmış bunun sonucunda Azerbaycan topraklarını da içine alan batı toprakları Cuci Han’a bırakıldı. Çinggiz Han’dan önce ölen Cuci Han’ın topraklarına oğlu Batu Han ve kendisinden sonra gelenler sahip çıktılar. Çinggiz Han’ın ölümünden sonra Moğol Devleti’nin başına geçen Ögedey Han zamanında İkinci Batı Seferleri başlatıldı. Bu seferler yine Cuci Ulusu’nun komutasında gerçekleşti. Bu kez Moğol ordularının başında Batu Han ve yanında Cebe ve Sübütey Noyan yer aldı. İkinci Batı Seferleri neticesinde büyük bir alana yayılan Moğol Devleti, Rusya topraklarının büyük bir kısmını da ele geçirdi. Batu Han bu sefer sonucunda dedesi Çinggiz Han hayatta iken kendisinden elde etmiş olduğu Altın Busagalı Ak-Orda’nın temellerini Rusya topraklarında bulunan bugünkü Aktübe bölgesinde Saray adını verdiği şehirle attı. Bu devlete Altın Orda denildi. Çeşitli kaynaklarda farklı isimlerle anılan bu devlet birçok defa Cuci Ulusu şeklinde anılırken, bazen de başında bulunan hükümdarın adıyla anıldı. Batu Han Saray şehrini ilk kurduğu zaman Büyük Moğol Devleti’nin Kara-Kurum’daki Ordası’na benzer bir yapıda kurdu. Şehirleşme adına önemli teşebbüsleri olan Batu Han’dan sonra gelişim ve genişlemeye önem veren kardeşi Berke Han hükümdar oldu. -

A monk in Mongolia: The historic journey of Benedict of Poland VATICAN CITY — Going out to the “peripheries” may be a phrase favored by Pope Francis, but even in diplomatic affairs, it is something the Vatican has done for centuries, often in the face of danger. As news of a possible agreement between China and the Vatican sparked debate about the best ways for the Catholic Church to deal with the Asian superpower, the Polish Institute in Rome recounted the story of a Polish Franciscan monk sent on a papal mission to the Far East 25 years before Marco Polo. The amazing adventures of Benedict of Poland, a Franciscan who accompanied a papal diplomat to Mongolia in 1245, were the centerpiece of the institute’s exhibit in late February. Benedict’s accounts of his journey give insight into the diplomatic protocols of the Holy See at the time, showing great openness to and respect for other cultures, Franciscan Father Emil Kumka told Catholic News Service March 1. “They adapted to these customs. To complete their diplomatic mission meant that flexibility and openness to customs and culture” was very important and, besides, it was consistent with the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi, said the priest, who is a historian at Rome’s Pontifical University of St. Bonaventure. Even though very little is known about his life, Benedict of Poland’s account sheds some light on the journey and gives a firsthand look at Mongolian life and culture with details not included in the official account of the journey written by Giovanni da Pian del Carpine, one of St. -

136 GOLDEN HORDE REVIEW. № 1. 2015 УДК 94(470) THE GOLDEN HORDE STATE IN THE SYSTEM OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS I.М. Mirgaleev (Sh. Marjani Institute of History, Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan) The present article examines the place of the Golden Horde in the system of international relations of the 13th–14th centuries as well as directions of its foreign policy. To determine the place of the ulus of Jochi in the international system the author suggests to disclose the subject through illumination of such important issues as: – the Mongol conquests and creation of the Chingisid state entities, the establishment of a new international order. – formation of the ulus of Jochi as an independent State and its role in the Chingisid States’ relations, the kurultai of 1269. – international activities of the Golden Horde State during the period of its might. – interstate coalitions in the global geopolitics and national interests of the ulus of Jochi in international systems. – The role and place of the Golden Horde in the international life of the second half of the 14th – early 15th centuries. The program activity of the Jochids in a new geopolitical situation of the late 14th – early 15th centuries. The author believes that the establishment of the Golden Horde State occurred in three phases (1207–1241, 1242–1259, 1260–1269). The Jochids’ policy towards their neighbors and other Chingisid states formed during this time. Both the Distemper of the 1360–70’s in the ulus of Jochi and destruction of all other Chingisid States resulted in the Golden Horde’s loss of its place in the system of international relations. -

Baraba Tatarları önceleri Şamanizm inancına ba ğlı iken, 18. yüzyıldan itibaren İslamiyeti kabul etmeye ba şlamı şlardır. Avcılık, balıkçılık, hayvan yeti ştiricili ği, tarım ve küçük el sanatları ba şlıca geçim kaynakları arasındadır. A STUDY ON THE LANGUAGE OF BARABA TATARS ABSTRACT Baraba Tatars live in Novosibirsk in Russia. The population of Baraba Tatars was about 8000 in 1980 because Siberia, the region they live has many climatic and geographical difficulties. Baraba Tatars’ religion was Shamanism, and they had began to convert into Islam since eighteenth century. -

The Mongol Catastrophe For the Muslim east, the sudden eruption of the Mongol hordes was an indescribable calamity. Something of the shock and despair of Muslim reaction can be seen in the history of the contemporary historian Ibn al-Athir (d. 1233). He writes here about the year 1220-1221 when the Mongols (“Tartars”) burst in on the eastern lands. Is this a positive, negative, or neutral description of the Mongols? Why might the Mongols be compared to Alexander rather than, say, the Huns? they eat, [needing] naught else. As for their beasts which they ride, these dig into I say, therefore, that this thing involves the description of the greatest catastrophe the earth with their hoofs and eat the roots of plants, knowing naught of barley. and the most dire calamity (of the like of which days and nights are innocent) And so, when they alight anywhere, they have need of nothing from without. As for which befell all men generally, and the Muslims in particular; so that, should 0e say their religion, the‟ worship the sun when it arises, and regard nothing as unlawful, that the world, since God Almighty created Adam until now, hath not been afflicted for the; eat all beasts, even dogs, pigs, and the like; nor do they recognise the with the like thereof, he would but speak the truth. For indeed history doth not marriage-tie, for several men are in marital relations with one woman, and if a child contain aught which approaches or comes nigh unto it.... is born, it knows not who is its father.
