Gelvin, Chair This dissertation traces the establishment of a binary between work and laziness from 1839 to 1920, the last century of the Ottoman Empire. Over this period, Ottoman society experienced an epochal shift in the discourses and practices of work. This study examines this shift, first, by exploring how concepts of work and productivity were moralized, socially practiced, militarized and politicized in a non-European modernity project, and second, by demonstrating how this emergent discourse, formulated as an issue of ‘national’ importance, became a constitutive element of the general nation-formation process within the last Ottoman century. I examine the configuration and development of the moralistic discourse of an ‘Islamic work ethic’ as an integral part of creating productive citizens. To do this, I consult an underutilized source, morality books, which display the connection between the mobilization for productivity, modern ii conceptualizations of body and time, and nation formation. Emphasizing the role of social practice in emergent discourses, I investigate how the bureaucratic reforms of the state in the last Ottoman century played a pivotal role in the transformation of concepts and practices of work. -

Burton bore the stamp of the Victorian era in which he lived, in Division. his outlook on sexuality there was little about him that seems "Victorian" in the sexually restrictive sense of that term. Based on his extensive travels in exotic lands, Burton translated and published works that were shocking for their sexual frankness. Moreover, his accounts of homosexual brothels and other activities severely stigmatized him. Although evidence of his own homosexual leanings is inconclusive, in his lifetime he was regarded with suspicion because of his knowledge and understanding of same-sex sexual activity. Burton was born in Torquay, England on March 19, 1821, the son of Lieutenant-Colonel Joseph Netterville Burton. In Genoa, Colonel Burton served Queen Caroline, the unwanted wife of George IV. She was known for being "gracious" to the officers of the garrison and won their loyalty and devotion. When she was called before the House of Lords on charges of adultery, Colonel Burton was summoned to testify. When he refused to do so, he was dismissed from his post at half pay. This willingness to defy societal strictures and authorities also manifested itself in Richard and his younger brother Edward. By 1840 the Burton boys had been sent to separate schools because of their bullying and troublemaking habits. Richard Burton was expelled from Oxford University in 1842. -

Abstract This paper explores eroticism and pleasure in Diane Case’s Toasted Penis and Cheese showing the wide variety of available sexual pleasures to men and women, but with emphasis on the avenues of pleasure available to the woman. Sexual pleasures in the novel are presented in binary forms with the socio-cultural and religious factors determining what are classified in these binaries as good/bad, moral/immoral, and acceptable/unacceptable. Case represents different understandings and ideologies over varied sexual behaviours and pleasure without subscribing to the inhibitions generated by these ideologies – she rather places adult consent over them. The degree of sexual satisfaction or its denial contributes significantly to the general wellbeing of the individual, and, to an extent, determines the pace of human inter-relations. The Sufi As The Axis Of The orld:W Representations Of Religious Authority In The Works Of Ismail Hakki Bursevi (1653-1725) Abstract The present study examines the ways in which Ismail Hakki Bursevi (1653-1725) d(re)defines and deploys Islamic discursive practices and institutions to assert his religious authority as the most influential Sufi master in the Celveti order after its founder. Through a literary analysis of Bursevi’s autobiographical notes and dedicatory treatises (tuhfe) to Ottoman officials, I examine how he uses the institutions of the Sufi master (shaykh), order (tarīqa), and the Celestial Axis (quṭb) to argue for his superior status vis-�-vis other members of the Ottoman religious and learned elite. I speculate argue that the particulars of Hakki’s self-representation can be viewed as early indications of institutional anxiety and contested leadership within the Celveti Sufi order, which split into subbranches in the latter part of the eighteenth century. -

THE PERFUMED GARDEN OF SENSUAL DELIGHT The Perfomed Garden ofSensual Delight has a bad reputarion and a tattered history. For over a century, it has been known in English through Sir Richard Burton's bizarre translation (from the French) which consistently elaborated and misrepresented the original. If ever a book needed demystifJing, it is this one. Although remarkably lewd at times, it does not linger over details nor does it contrive to excite. It does not, therefore, qualify as pornography. In fact, The Perfomed Garden of Sensual Delight is nothing more than a manual for the ordinary, married man of its author's time and place - Tunisia, in the early part of the 15th century - but one that is not without some entertainment value. The present translation is not only the first, published English version to be based upon an established Arabic text, but also the first to be translated directly from the original Arabic at all. This schema took shape under the influenceof two major factors. On the one hand, there was the impact of the two-tiered model of cultural and religious studies in nineteenth- century Europe with its relatively sharp distinction between "high" and "low" traditions.(') On the other, there were the ideological needs of incipientTurkish nationalism to distance itself from the Ottoman elite while embracing some form of populism.
