SKYC I FerrarI ENZO TY Named after the founder of Ferrari, Enzo Ferrari, it is one of the most powerful naturally aspirated (petrol powered) cars in the world. Produced between 2003 – 2004, only 400 were ever made making it especially rare on New Zealand roads. This is the only one in New Zealand. Not surprisingly it typically trades above US$1 million at auction. Su Also capable of incredible speeds it can reach 100kph from a standing start in just 3.14 seconds and tops out at around 368 kph. It will cover quarter of a mile in approximately 11 seconds! The Enzo is pushed along P by Ferrari's F140 65° V12 with 4 valves per cylinder, dual overhead cams and variable valve timing. ercar FerrarI 430 ScuDERIA First unveiled by Michael Schumacher at the Frankfurt Motorshow in 2007 the 430 Scuderia very much picks up where the Enzo left off in terms of performance and incorporates many styling cues from classic Ferrari's produced over the years. So it's not only sexy but it's blisteringly quick too with a top speed of 319 kph and 0-100 kph time of 3.1 seconds. Based on the Ferrari 430 the 430 Scuderia weighs 100kg less and incorporates super fast shifting - helping to make it one of the fastest cars Show from an acceleration perspective. LamborghINI GALLarDO SPYDer This car reaches a top speed of 314kph with the roof up and 307kph with the roof down. Accelerating from 0 to 100kph in 4.3 seconds. SKYC I TY Su P ercar McLareN F1 RoaD Car Until recently this was the fastest legal road car in the World. With a top speed of 386 kph it is nothing short of a rocket on wheels. Capable of going from 0 to 100kph in just 3.1 seconds the McLaren is powered by a 6.1-litre 60° BMW S70 V12 engine. It was also one of the first production cars to use a carbon-fibre monocoque chassis and made use of other expensive materials like carbon fibre, titanium, gold, magnesium and kevlar. First introduced in 1993 there were only 106 of these rare machines ever Show built (and only 64 were road legal like the one on show). Manufacturing ceased in 1998. McLareN M8A M8A-2, Denny Hulme’s car was constructed at the McLaren Colnbrook factory in England in early 1968 by the team, which included New Zealanders Colin Beanland, Cary Taylor, George Begg and Chris Charles. The two M8As were only just ready in time for the opening round of the 1968 Can-Am series in North America and at Elkhart Lake the McLaren Team pulled several all nighters to make the cars raceworthy. PorSche GT2/ GEN II 911 The classic Supercar. 390kW (530hp) @ 6,500 rpm and can do 0 to 100kph in 3.7 seconds with a top speed of 329kph. NEW ZEALAND’S A1GP DRIVERS SKYC I ChrIS vaN Der DrIft TY Hometown: Hamilton, NZ Lives: Rotterdam, The Netherlands Age: 22 Su Hamilton born Chris van der Drift carries New Zealand’s hopes into the country’s home race of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport at the Taupo Motorsport Park over the weekend of 23-25 January. While he may not P have been on the radar for many Kiwi motorsport fans over the past few seasons,Van der Drift’s time spent on the tough European racing circuit ercar will stand him in good stead as he tackles his first home race for three years. In 2008 van der Drift won the International Formula Master championship in style, claiming six race wins and a total of ten trips to the podium. There has never been an International Formula Master race in New Zealand, but to put the speed of the cars in perspective, they are placed in between a New Zealand Toyota Racing Car, and an A1GP car. Racing in Europe is especially competitive, so the race-craft and results van der Drift has earned over his last few years of competition no doubt pr Show oves him as a top choice to drive Black Beauty at Taupo. Van der Drift has clocked up some strong mileage behind the wheel of Black Beauty, driving her in the first official test day of the current A1GP season. Following this, he lined up for his first race weekend for New Zealand at China’s Chengdu circuit. The weekend didn’t reward the team with the results they were after; the best result was seventh place in the Sprint race. But the break over Christmas has allowed time to further refine Black Beauty’s technical settings before Taupo to ensure Chris has the best equipment to do the job. Hamilton was home for van der Drift for many years, until both his parents and grandmother sold their homes and moved to Europe, to invest in Chris’ career and give him the chance to provehimself. Now based in the Dutch port city of Rotterdam, van der Drift is rarely at his European base due to his busy racing calendar. Chris’s first foray in car racing came about after he won the European Formula BMW scholarship. The prize paid for part of the season’s racing, but van der Drift’s family had to cover the rest of the budget. The investment was rewarded by his winning the Rookie of the Year title, and securing fourth overall. Rookie of the Year titles also followed for van der Drift in 2006 in the Formula Renault Eurocup and NEC championships, before moving to the European Formula Master championship in 2007, where he secured second place in his first year in the category. An adrenaline junkie, ‘Vandy’ as his friends call him, rates skydiving as one of the most exciting things he’s done outside of driving race cars. SKYC I EarL Bamber TY Hometown: Wanganui, NZ Lives: Wanganui, NZ Age: 18 Su Wanganui’s Earl Bamber is a young Kiwi on a mission – a motor-racing mission! At just 18-yearsold, Bamber has already competed in more than 100 motor races. More impressively – he’s won more than a quarter of P these races, a race to win ratio achieved by very few drivers in the world.

BMW Motorsport 2016 BMW MOTORSPORT www.press. Sheer JUNIOR PROGRAMME bmwgroup-sport.com Driving Pleasure MEDIA INFORMATION. BMW MOTORSPORT JUNIOR PROGRAMME. TALENT PROMOTION IN GT RACING. The development of promising talented drivers enjoys a long tradition at BMW Motorsport. In 2014 a new multi-level GT junior concept had been introduced: the BMW Motorsport Junior Programme. This realignment saw BMW Motorsport shift its development of young drivers back to the GT and touring car sector. In Formula racing the concept bore fruit for many years in Formula BMW and the Formula BMW Talent Cup and kick-started the racing career of many successful drivers like Sebastian Vettel, Nico Rosberg and Nico Hülkenberg. The focus is on GT and touring car drivers who already have some racing experience. Outings in the BMW M235i Racing are an integral part of the comprehensive training programme. As well as race starts and test drives, intensive theory courses dealing with fitness and PR are planned, as are mental and simulator training. The potential candidates for this year’s class were put to the test in a shootout in the BMW M235i Racing in Dijon on 10th/11th March. A decision as to which of the young drivers showed the most potential is made by a jury of experts, headed by BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. BMW works driver Dirk Adorf will act as a mentor for the junior programme. At the end of the year, the most successful BMW Motorsport Junior of the season will be given the opportunity to continue his training for a second year in a higher racing category.

  • Renault Sport Technologies and Michelin Evaluating 17- and 18-Inch Tyres
Clermont-Ferrand (France), October 31, 2014 Renault Sport Technologies and Michelin evaluating 17- and 18-inch tyres Renault Sport Technologies and Michelin share the same vision that motorsport permits innovative technologies to be fostered in a competitive environment with a view to achieving closer ties with the technologies that are available to the motoring public. Accordingly, the two partners are currently exploring the feasibility of switching to 18- and 17-inch tyres for the Formula Renault 3.5 Formula Renault 2.0 championships respectively from 2016. An initial test session based on Formula Renault 3.5 cars was carried out at Valencia, Spain, followed by a second featuring Formula Renault 2.0 cars at Barcelona, again in Spain. Given the positive results achieved at these tests, Renault Sport Technologies and Michelin are pleased to announce their intention to pursue this joint-development programme, and further sessions are planned over the months ahead. Since January, the collaboration between Renault Sport Technologies and Michelin has enabled the two companies to collect a significant amount of data after completing several hundred kilometres in testing. The two entities are carefully studying the results of this groundwork in order to obtain a thorough understanding of the repercussions any changes in tyre dimensions might have for the drivers, as well as in terms of grip and suspension performance. As far as factors such as top speed, road holding, tyre wear and the wear of other components are concerned, the early conclusions are positive. Despite requiring a certain number of small modifications, the cars feature a more modern look and benefit from enhanced cornering performance.

The various racing categories are moving on a pace and there is plenty to talk about in the world of motorsport medicine and rescue. This issue takes a look at some track safety devices; namely the run-off areas and gravel traps – the pros, the cons and the downright scary. There is a review of recent race events and a few highlights from other aspects of motorsporting news. If you have ever wanted to know what a tank slapper, a lambda reading or reactive suspension was, then skip to the Wikipedia motorsports terminology link. Good luck. Matthew Mac Partlin Technical review Track safety devices – Run-offs and gravel traps Competitors and race vehicles can be fully prepared with safety equipment, but at some point or other a vehicle will unintentionally veer off the track. Sometimes the driver will be able to gather it up and rejoin the race, if there is sufficient space to do so. However, there is often a conflict between race track safety, spectator friendliness and geography. The safest track would probably be a straight road, with a wide run-off to either side and at either end and have no more Copyright Matthew Mac Partlin, 2010 Page 1 of 9 than a couple of cars competing on it at any one time. But it wouldn’t be terribly interesting to compete in or to watch.

  • Porsche 919 Hybrid English.Indd
Porsche 919 Hybrid Return to top-level sport Porsche is making its comeback to the top-level motorsport arena: with the new 919 Hybrid the sports car brand is sending a platform for pioneering technology to the top category of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) with the undisputed seasonal highlight of the 24-hour Le Mans race. Porsche's reputation precedes it at this venue: with 16 overall victories under its belt, the brand holds the record for this, the most famous endurance race in the world. In 2014 Porsche is returning to the top-level class endurance race after a 16-year absence - namely Le Mans Prototypes (LMP1). Matthias Müller, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG explains: "The new and revolutionary efficiency regulations for this class were what prompted us to take this step. In 2014 it is not going to be the fastest contender who is going to win the sports car world championship and Le Mans, but the car that gets furthest with the defined amount of energy. And it is precisely this challenge that the automotive industry has to face. The 919 Hybrid is like a high speed research laboratory and the most complex racing car Porsche has ever built." The new WEC regulations for the LMP1 racing car gives engineers an unusual amount of leeway and demands pioneering technology, such as hybridisation, downsizing engines and consistent lightweight construction. This is all particularly relevant for the development of future generations of factory-spec sports cars. Maximum sporting performance and highest efficiency are at the heart of "Porsche Intelligent Performance".
