ASMMR Newsletter Vol 2 Issue 4
Volume 2, Issue 4 May 2010 The Australasian Society for Motorsports Medicine and Rescue Contents Race control Clinical review Recent race results Worldwide motorsport update Caught by the cameras Race control Welcome to the May edition of the ASMMR newsletter. The various racing categories are moving on a pace and there is plenty to talk about in the world of motorsport medicine and rescue. This issue takes a look at some track safety devices; namely the run-off areas and gravel traps – the pros, the cons and the downright scary. There is a review of recent race events and a few highlights from other aspects of motorsporting news. If you have ever wanted to know what a tank slapper, a lambda reading or reactive suspension was, then skip to the Wikipedia motorsports terminology link. Good luck. Matthew Mac Partlin Technical review Track safety devices – Run-offs and gravel traps Competitors and race vehicles can be fully prepared with safety equipment, but at some point or other a vehicle will unintentionally veer off the track. Sometimes the driver will be able to gather it up and rejoin the race, if there is sufficient space to do so. However, there is often a conflict between race track safety, spectator friendliness and geography. The safest track would probably be a straight road, with a wide run-off to either side and at either end and have no more Copyright Matthew Mac Partlin, 2010 Page 1 of 9 than a couple of cars competing on it at any one time. But it wouldn’t be terribly interesting to compete in or to watch. -

The Chapman Report Published by the Golden Gate Lotus Club www.gglotus.org March 2006 Track Day At Laguna editor The track day looks to have been a great day, except for the driver of the Corvette in the bottom photo. To the right is John Zender, himself, pushing the “Flamer” down the corkscrew. Spring is closing fast, with CSRG running their first race of the year this month at Infineon. The first autocross at the Marina Airport will be on April 22nd, then another May 13th. HMSA will be at Laguna in April, also. May is the WCLM in Cambria/San Louis Obispo. The Palo Alto Concours announcing that all British cars would be the marque in June. Oh, there was a trick along with the ‘magic’ talked about last month. I did buy Yoko A048’s for $100 each in the UK, but not the size for an Elise. I omitted the fact that they were for 12” diameter rims, for an early Mini March Meeting Cooper. It will make this a nice Friday, March 17th, 7:30 PM autocrosser, though. The ‚DRM’ (=Deutsche Rennsport-Meisterschaft) was the most important German racing series from 1972 to 1985, which got designed to establish a title with international meaning and relevance. 14 years of touring- and sports car racing of the highest level that motorsports can offer. Classic touring cars and GT were the start: The main features of the sports gear were stripped out, lightened car bodies, performance-enhanced engines and improved suspensions, transmissions and brakes. Stronger, lighter, faster - the tubular frame designs of Group 5 coupled with the turbo age are what subsequently gave the DRM probably the best and most spectacular races. Group C ultimately heralded the end: fascinating, thoroughbred racing cars, but simply too expensive for a national championship to offer the series a future. The brand with the four rings is to become the premium automobile segment’s ‘number one.’ And in the DTM, Audi has firmly set its sights on being ‘number one’ as well. After winning the manufacturers’ title last season, the drivers’ title that last went to Audi in 2013 is to be recaptured this year. In the fierce competition with BMW and Mercedes-Benz, Audi Sport relies on time- tested and familiar assets: the same three teams, the same eight drivers and exactly the same Audi RS 5 DTM that at the end of 2014 was the car to be beaten. The further development of the car in winter was prohibited by the regulations. -

Historic Formula Ford News December 2008 ever. Our numbers now are even greater than when Historic FF started 12 years ago!
