1 Fourth Annual Michael R. Argetsinger Symposium – 2018
Fourth Annual Michael R. Argetsinger Symposium – 2018 International Motor Racing Research Center PROGRAM FRIDAY NOVEMBER 9 Morning Sessions Location: Watkins Glen International Media Center 10:00am to 11:00am Tom Adamich - Formula Vee: The Birth of Florida’s “People’s Race Car” Mr. Adamich is a Digital Asset Librarian and a certified teacher-librarian. A graduate of Kent State University (Ohio) and KSU College, he is in addition President of the Visiting Librarian Service. Mr. Adamich analyzes the deep cultural roots and enduring success of Formula Vee, the “People’s Race Car,” from its origins in the work of Ferdinand Porsche to its birth as an American racing phenomenon in the 1960s. He relates the story of Formula Vee, as both a Volkswagen Beetle adaptation and as a common man’s racing vehicle, focusing on its origin in Florida and the Southeastern United States, the “birthplace of the Formula Vee.” Francis G. Clax - Americans Enter International Grand Prix Motorcycle Racing Francis Clax, a noted expert on early automotive history, describes himself as “a lifetime devotee of all things with a motor that go fast.” From an early age, he mastered automobiles and motorcycles, eventually competing successfully in heavyweight superbike racing. From the late 1980s to 2007, Mr. Clax hosted a prime-time cable series “The Motorcycle” and, more recently, has concentrated on motometer automobilia collecting. Mr. Clax explains how American sportsmen, typically fixtures in almost every type of competitive racing in air, water or on land, were late entrants into the world of open road and closed paved circuit racing events. -
Wales Rally GB 08 Preview
76 th Wales Rally GB (December 4-7, 2008) Citroën targeting the championship double in Wales True to tradition, the grand finale of this year's World Rally Championship will take crews to Great Britain for the Wales Rally GB, the 15 th and ultimate encounter of the season which will settle the outcome of the 2008 Manufacturers' title chase. Having made sure of the Drivers' crown with Sébastien Loeb/Daniel Elena* in Japan, the Citroën Total squad is particularly fired up as it bids to seal the championship double. C4 WRCs have been entered for the five-time World Champions* and their Spanish team-mates Dani Sordo/Marc Martí. Two other C4 WRCs have been entered to contest the British round. They will be in the hands of Conrad Rautenbach/David Senior and of the recently-crowned Junior World Champions* Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia, and both will be prepared and run by PH Sport with the support of technical staff from Citroën Sport The majority of the route of this year's Wales Rally GB, which provides a little more than 348km of competitive action divided into 19 stages, will take competitors north of the Swansea-based service park, and features several notable changes compared with recent years. These range from a re-mix of familiar forest territory in Resolfen and classics such as Crychan run in the opposite direction, as well as a return to Builth Wells for the first time in eight years. Indeed, the format of this season's edition and its early-December slot inevitably conjure up images of RAC Rallies of the past and the lingering use of the event's former name will rarely have been more justified. -
Fast-Cars in Schools: a CADET Outreach Initiative John M
AAEE2017 CONFERENCE Manly, Sydney, Australia Fast-Cars in Schools: a CADET Outreach Initiative John M. Long, Leanne Collins, Jason Steinwedel, Jessica Sautner, and Simon Cavenett School of Engineering, Deakin University, Geelong, VIC Corresponding Author Email: [email protected] SESSION Educating the Edisons of the 21st Century CONTEXT In order to provide for Australia’s long-term needs for engineers, it has become apparent that the profession needs to promote itself to school-age children. This is so that the seeds of interest in engineering are planted early enough so that they can grow. Recent research indicates that this can be most effectively done in primary schools. Students tend to decide whether they have an interest in STEM fields before secondary school. The Centre for Advanced Design and Engineering Training (CADET) was established as a facility for educating engineers, starting in primary school and providing facilities and expertise all the way to doctoral studies. One key component of CADET’s mission is to provide outreach programs in engineering to students in both primary and secondary school. PURPOSE A primary-school outreach program was developed to give students an authentic engineering experience in the context of developing a small racing car and working with an associated cross-disciplinary team. The program was designed to be completely immersed and integrated with the Victorian Curriculum at year six. APPROACH The program was named “Fast Cars in Schools.” Teams of students from a number of primary schools developed a complete racing package of a small car, team jerseys, logos, advertising posters, and even sponsorship. -
Volkswagens Segerrad Bröts I Rally Argentina
2016 Bmw Motorsport Junior Programme
BMW Motorsport 2016 BMW MOTORSPORT www.press. Sheer JUNIOR PROGRAMME bmwgroup-sport.com Driving Pleasure MEDIA INFORMATION. BMW MOTORSPORT JUNIOR PROGRAMME. TALENT PROMOTION IN GT RACING. The development of promising talented drivers enjoys a long tradition at BMW Motorsport. In 2014 a new multi-level GT junior concept had been introduced: the BMW Motorsport Junior Programme. This realignment saw BMW Motorsport shift its development of young drivers back to the GT and touring car sector. In Formula racing the concept bore fruit for many years in Formula BMW and the Formula BMW Talent Cup and kick-started the racing career of many successful drivers like Sebastian Vettel, Nico Rosberg and Nico Hülkenberg. The focus is on GT and touring car drivers who already have some racing experience. Outings in the BMW M235i Racing are an integral part of the comprehensive training programme. As well as race starts and test drives, intensive theory courses dealing with fitness and PR are planned, as are mental and simulator training. The potential candidates for this year’s class were put to the test in a shootout in the BMW M235i Racing in Dijon on 10th/11th March. A decision as to which of the young drivers showed the most potential is made by a jury of experts, headed by BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. BMW works driver Dirk Adorf will act as a mentor for the junior programme. At the end of the year, the most successful BMW Motorsport Junior of the season will be given the opportunity to continue his training for a second year in a higher racing category. -
