It’s been a year of both triumph and, unfortunately, tragedy and in this issue we take time out to remember María de Villota, whose passing in October left a deep void not just in motor sport but in all our hearts. María’s bravery following her F1 testing accident and the dedication she displayed afterwards – not only in promoting female involvement in motor sport but also safety on the road and track – will be missed. Elsewhere, it was a year of great success for women competitors and in this edition we look at Lucile Cypriano’s victory in the VW and commission-supported shoot-out for a place in next year’s VW Scirocco R-Cup and reveal how the FIA European Rallycross Championship has become a haven for female racers. It’s been a great year for CONTACTS: women in all forms of motor sport and IF YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS ABOUT THIS NEWSLETTER OR we look forward to even more in 2014! STORIES FOR THE NEXT ISSUE, WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU.

The company is believed to have taken the decision after indications in Japan that the automotive markets are not getting any better, Honda having recently announced a 56% drop in earnings in the last quarter, compared to 2008. Prior to that the company was looking at other options, such as selling the team on to someone else. This has now been axed and the company will simply close things down and settle all the necessary contractual commitments as quickly as possible. The news, if confirmed, will be another blow to the manufacturer power in F1 as it will be the third withdrawal by a major car company in 11 months, following in the footsteps of Honda and BMW. There are also doubts about the future of Renault's factory team. The news will also be a blow to the Formula One Teams' Association, although the members have learned that working together produces much better results than trying to take on the authorities alone. It also means that there are now just three manufacturers left: Ferrari, Mercedes and Renault, and engine supply from Cosworth will become essential to ensure there are sufficient engines to go around.

LOUIS: The Verizon IndyCar Series returns to Gateway Motorsports Park for the first time in more than a decade for this weekend’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Valvoline. Of the 21 drivers expected to compete, only Helio Castroneves, Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan have raced Indy cars at Gateway in the past. Will experience pay off in the final oval race of the 2017 season? • HOMETOWN HELIO?: Helio Castroneves has fond memories of St. Louis as he raced for St. Louis-based Hogan Racing early in his career and scored a podium for the team at Gateway Motorsports Park in 1999. Castroneves, the last Indy car driver to win at Gateway in 2003, has never finished outside the top 10 at the 1.25-mile oval. Can he use a little bit of St. Louis “home-cooking” to secure his first championship? • FANTASY FOCUS: With so many drivers making their first appearance at Gateway Motorsports Park, it’s hard to overlook Helio Castroneves’ experience this weekend. But if you need a value pick, look at either AJ Foyt Racing’s Conor Daly or Ed Carpenter Racing’s JR Hildebrand.
