Examina os alicerces de sua memória, interrogando as razões e os efeitos da predominante explicação por meio de suas relações com o Manifesto dos Pioneiros e a Campanha em Defesa da Escola Pública. Reconstrói eventos, agentes e significados, compreendendo-os como ação coletiva e coordenada de intelectuais para fins políticos determinados. Conclui-se realçando o manifesto em sua especificidade e historicidade, aparando equívocos historiográficos resultantes de repetições sem lastro e abordagens que produziram lacunas em sua compreensão como evento singular. The text examines the foundations of the manifesto’s memory, investigating the reasons and effects of its predominant explanation through its relations to the Pioneers Manifesto and to the Campaign in Defense of Public School. -

It presents major topics in the panorama of Brazilian cultural history and civilization from 1500 to the present through readings on regions, cultures, peoples, and arts, including the architects of Brazil’s national cultural identity, its chronological development, and modern self-description. Topics include discovery and rediscovery of Brazil, baroque architecture, romanticism and empire, regionalism, immigration, urbanization, and modernization. The main texts draw on a cultural history of Brazil through selected writings by major authors and scholars. The course features an individual creative project on the student’s experience in Brazil to be presented in Portuguese during the final two classes. Requirements No absences allowed in YSS. Two objective tests during weeks 3 and 6 (40%) covering important names, documents, and events from the readings. Preparation and oral participation in each class discussion required (20%). Each student will prepare an original project on a specific interest in Brazil, coordinated with the professor (25%), presented in class on July 20. -

O intuito é de apontar a forma como suas peças estão inseridas não só em um campo teatral emergente de Recife, mas também em uma disputa política e simbólica entre famílias da elite paraibana e pernambucana. O assassinato de seu pai, tal como as represálias que seus parentes sofreram nos anos 30, inserem o dramaturgo em um campo de disputa pela identidade de sua família em relação aos seus adversários. A lógica privada da briga de família pode ser reconhecida nas opções artísticas assumidas pelo escritor, mesmo depois da aparente resolução da "intriga" que envolveu os Suassuna, Dantas e Pessoa pelo controle do Estado da Paraíba em 1930. Ariano Suassuna, dramaturgo e romancista paraibano radicado em Recife, hoje desfruta do reconhecimento da crítica como um dos grandes escritores brasileiros vivos. Principalmente suas peças de teatro foram fundamentais para a constituição do moderno teatro brasileiro, como afirmaram Sábato Magaldi e Décio de Almeida Prado [1]. -

After its independence in 1822, Brazil dedicated itself to the task of obtaining the diplomatic recognition of other nations. Although the United States was the first country to grant dip- lomatic recognition to the new South American nation, it was clear at the time that the leaders of the new country valued little the recognition from the nation to the north, in their evaluation merely a republic, and a young and ex- pressionless republic at that. Although Brazil was the first country to formally recognize the Monroe Doctrine, and even to propose a permanent treaty with the US on this basis, the diplomatic recognition of England seemed much more important to the leaders of the new Empire in South America. In addi- tion, the United States had as its priority tasks as the expansion to the west and to avoid the pitfalls of European diplomacy. With this in mind, Brazil certainly did not appear high on the list of US foreign policy priorities. The picture of relative detachment described above began to change in the second half of the 19th century. Several diplomatic misunderstandings led to the gradual departure between Brazil and England. At the same time, the US emerged from its Civil War as a more united, strong and fast-growing country, more willing to engage diplomatically with the world. -

ARIANO SUASSUNA: A ESCRITA E A PRÁTICA DE UM PENSAMENTO EDUCACIONAL NO “BRASIL REAL” Aurea Maria Bezerra Machado PROPED – UERJ [email protected] RESUMO Este trabalho configura-se como uma reflexão sobre a contribuição de Ariano Suassuna, dramaturgo, romancista, ensaísta e professor universitário à educação brasileira, desenvolvida no espaço político-social que Machado de Assis chamava de “Brasil real”. Como professor, Suassuna usou a Literatura, a arte da palavra, a serviço da educação, sob o enfoque discursivo da cultura oral do sertão. Formado em Direito e Filosofia, lecionou por trinta e dois anos na Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, onde ensinou Estética e Teoria do Teatro, Literatura brasileira e História da Cultura brasileira, aplicando sempre a Literatura com as Ciências sociais. Mostrava aos seus discentes que, o conhecimento adquirido no universo literário podia ser uma grande aventura para a transformação da vida em sociedade. Foi ainda Secretário de Educação e Cultura de Recife e Secretário de Cultura no governo Miguel Arraes. Foi um dos maiores responsáveis pela difusão da cultura nordestina, unindo dois elementos até então díspares: o erudito e a cultura popular, com o “Movimento Armorial”. Desenvolveu ainda o projeto “ A Onça malhada, a Favela e o Arraial”, com o qual percorreu as periferias das cidades brasileiras e o sertão, redutos do povo simples do “Brasil real”. Curriculum Vitae Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Isadora Moura Mota completed a B.A. in History at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 2003 and a Master’s Degree at the Center for the Social History of Culture at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in 2005. After relocating to the United States, she received a Master’s Degree from Brown University in 2012. Her dissertation research has been supported by an International Dissertation Research Fellowship conferred by the Social Sciences Research Council (SSRC) and funding from the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, The Cogut Center for the Humanities, and the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice at Brown University. Her research interests have resulted in several publications focusing on slave activism in nineteenth-century Brazil, the role of Anglo- American abolitionism in the history of Brazilian emancipation, Afro-Brazilian literacy, as well as on comparative slavery and emancipation in the Atlantic World. -

Portuguese at Yale an Historical Sketch K. David Jackson Yale University [email protected] The presence of Portuguese at Yale can be traced to the hiring of Henry Roseman Lang, an Austrian with a doctorate in romance philology from Strasbourg (1890), in the Department of Romance Languages. There is no evidence that Professor Lang ever taught Portuguese, although he worked with Portuguese medieval poetry and corresponded with Carolina Michaela de Vasconcellos, Adolfo Coelho, and other famous Portuguese linguists and philologists of the time. In 1908, he received Joaquim Nabuco, then the first Brazilian ambassador to the United States, for two lectures at Yale on “The Place of Camões in Literature” and “The Spirit of Nationality in Brazil.” Professor Lang had a long and distinguished career at Yale, from Instructor, 1892-93, Assistant Professor, 1893-96, Professor of Romance Philology, 1896-1906, to Benjamin F. Barge Professor of Romance Languages & Linguistics, 1906-1922. He was emeritus professor from his retirement in 1922 until his death in 1934. The Department of Romance Languages, in which Lang headed the Spanish section, would continue to oversee teaching of the various romance languages at Yale until 1973. There was only a minor in Spanish during Lang’s time. In 1929 Romance Languages subdivided into a Department of French and a Department of Spanish and Italian. Spanish and Italian would continue as a unit until 1970. From 1971-73 Portuguese was added to become the Department of Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese, directed by Emir Rodríguez Monegal (Ph.D. Montevideo, 1956), a Uruguayan critic who arrived in 1969.
