Recife is the ideal city for you to experience Brazilian culture and society. You will visit the city's many monuments, churches, and museums. You will have the opportunity to travel back in time to the restored 17th century village of Olinda, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; enjoy clear blue waters and aquatic wildlife in Porto de Galinhas; and experience the Amazon, the largest rainforest on earth.

Maximize the breadth and depth of your experience through a combination of intensive instruction, workshops, volunteer work, excursions, and lectures—for six hours daily.

You will hone your Portuguese-language skills, and improve your understanding of racial

dynamics and their connections to education, art, literature, religion, music, and culture

in general. You will develop a deeper and more nuanced understanding of cultural and

intellectual trends in contemporary Brazil.

The Program

The program is designed to maximize the breadth and depth of your experience through a combination of intensive instruction, workshops, volunteer work, excursions, and lectures— for six hours daily. You will hone your Portuguese-language skills, and improve your understanding of racial dynamics and their connections to education, art, literature, religion, music, and culture in general. You will develop a deeper and more nuanced understanding of cultural and intellectual trends in contemporary Brazil.

Prerequisite: Harvard students must have completed the Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences courses Portuguese 10 and Portuguese 11, Portuguese 10S and Portuguese 15 (intensive course), or the Harvard University placement test. Other students must have completed 1 year or 1 accelerated semester of Portuguese.

The Course

Re-imagining Brazil—the Relations of History, Arts, and Education (33490) In this intensive eight-week program, students experience life and culture in Recife, in the northeast of Brazil. This course provides students with essential language skills as well as an immersion in Brazilian history, art and literature. Students are given the necessary background to critically examine the representation of Brazilian identity/identities in art and literature. To further supplement their linguistic and cultural studies, students engage with local communities via excursions, visits to non-governmental organizations, and service-learning opportunities. 8 credits - UN, GR Limited enrollment.

Description of course

In this intensive 8-week abroad program, students will experience life and culture in Recife, PE – in the northeast of Brazil while attaining a critical understanding of Brazilian society through literature, art and immersion. This practical course will provide learners with essential language skills as well as the historical and cultural background necessary in order to contextualize various representations of Brazilian identity (identities) through art and literature. To further supplement their linguistic and cultural studies, students will engage with local communities via content-based excursions, visits to NGOs, and service-learning and internship opportunities. Course Objectives:

At the end of eight weeks, students are expected to:

1. Get acquainted to the daily life and customs of Brazilian families and society.

2. Experience various aspects of Brazilian identity through art and art education.

3. Enhance their three modes of communication (4 language skills).

4. Become versed on Brazilian issues of race and their connections to education, art, literature, and culture in general.

5. Gain a deeper understanding of cultural and intellectual differences and similarities between the U.S. and Brazil.

Evaluation

Readings: It is the student’s responsibility to read assigned texts and review grammar content before each class. Language: The language course will be taught in the morning. Students are expected to prepare for these classes and complete all assigned tasks on a daily basis. Language policy is enforced – learners are not allowed to speak English during classes and activities that are related to this study abroad program. Cultural component: It is the student’s responsibility to read assigned texts prior to conferences and lectures on cultural content. Blog: Students are expected to write one full page every day. (More information will be provided in the guidelines) Workshops [oficinas]: Participation in the workshops is mandatory, as they will be contextualized with readings and content proposed for this course. Tests and Quizzes: There will be four written tests covering all the content covered in classes. Oral Presentations: Students will create vlogs and or podcasts episodes weekly. During the last week of class, students will present a final project based on their internship or experience volunteering in a local NGOs. Volunteer work: Students are expected to complete the assigned hours of community service or internship listed on the calendar. There will be options for internship (more details will be provided during the interview)

Week 6

Excursion – Manaus - Amazon – 3 nights-4 days

Arrival at AMAZON TURTLE LODGE is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. At 12:00 p.m. lunch will be served. You will taste a fresh water fish, beef, chicken, salads and exotic fruits from the Amazon, in buffet style. At 03:00 p.m. a motorized canoe trip will introduce you to the area. Throughout the duration of this trip you will experience the pristine and varied landscapes of the region, with the opportunity to observe and enjoy the great diversity of animals found in the area. It is common to see squirrel monkeys, sloth, iguanas, spiders and a wide variety of birds, including the beautiful white egrets that delicately wade amongst the floating grass islands. At 07:30 p.m. dinner will be served in the AMAZON TURTLE LODGE restaurant. Day 2 at 05:30 a.m. we leave the lodge to the sunrise and bird watching tour, a wonderful opportunity to experience the majestic Amazon and all its creatures awaking with the sun. We will return in time for breakfast - served at 07:30 p.m. At 08:30 a.m. put on your walking shoes and get ready for an exciting trek in the jungle, to learn about jungle survival techniques and medicinal plants with our experienced tour guides. This is a unique opportunity to learn about Amazon Biodiversity. At 12:30 p.m. relaxing lunch and time to nap until our next adventure - at 03:00 p.m. we will go piranha fishing. On this adventure you have to catch piranha or something else. Otherwise there will be no dinner (LOL!!!). At 07:00 p.m. Dinner will be served and about 08:00 p.m. we will embark on a night trip to go alligator spotting. This expedition is very exciting and involves everyone keenly trying to spot the alligators along the river banks and on the floating grasses. Once we locate it, one of the tour guides will try to catch it, with their bare hands.

Day 3 at 08:00 a.m. we visit a caboclo’s house to learn about their customs and culture. We’ll visit rubber and cassava plantations. This will be a great opportunity to take photos of how fruits, vegetables, spices and nuts are picked in the jungle. You will also learn how the local people prepare their food using all these natural ingredients and you will have the opportunity to taste some of the most exotic fruits, vegetables, spices and herbs. At 12:00 p.m. lunch will be served. In the afternoon more activities by canoe, swimming and exploring this beautiful region. Dinner will be served at 07:30 p.m.
