Portuguese language in Angola: luso-creoles' missing link? John M. Lipski {presented at annual meeting of the AATSP, San Diego, August 9, 1995} 0. Introduction Portuguese explorers first reached the Congo Basin in the late 15th century, beginning a linguistic and cultural presence that in some regions was to last for 500 years. In other areas of Africa, Portuguese-based creoles rapidly developed, while for several centuries pidginized Portuguese was a major lingua franca for the Atlantic slave trade, and has been implicated in the formation of many Afro- American creoles. The original Portuguese presence in southwestern Africa was confined to limited missionary activity, and to slave trading in coastal depots, but in the late 19th century, Portugal reentered the Congo-Angola region as a colonial power, committed to establishing permanent European settlements in Africa, and to Europeanizing the native African population. In the intervening centuries, Angola and the Portuguese Congo were the source of thousands of slaves sent to the Americas, whose language and culture profoundly influenced Latin American varieties of Portuguese and Spanish. Despite the key position of the Congo-Angola region for Ibero-American linguistic development, little is known of the continuing use of the Portuguese language by Africans in Congo-Angola during most of the five centuries in question. Only in recent years has some attention been directed to the Portuguese language spoken non-natively but extensively in Angola and Mozambique (Gonçalves 1983). In Angola, the urban second-language varieties of Portuguese, especially as spoken in the squatter communities of Luanda, have been referred to as Musseque Portuguese, a name derived from the KiMbundu term used to designate the shantytowns themselves. -

Examina os alicerces de sua memória, interrogando as razões e os efeitos da predominante explicação por meio de suas relações com o Manifesto dos Pioneiros e a Campanha em Defesa da Escola Pública. Reconstrói eventos, agentes e significados, compreendendo-os como ação coletiva e coordenada de intelectuais para fins políticos determinados. Conclui-se realçando o manifesto em sua especificidade e historicidade, aparando equívocos historiográficos resultantes de repetições sem lastro e abordagens que produziram lacunas em sua compreensão como evento singular. The text examines the foundations of the manifesto’s memory, investigating the reasons and effects of its predominant explanation through its relations to the Pioneers Manifesto and to the Campaign in Defense of Public School. -

HISTORY OF THE PORTUGUESE MUSIC: AN OVERVIEW Rui César Vilão Physics Department, University of Coimbra, PORTUGAL Abstract A brief overview of the history of the Portuguese music is given. In memoriam José Carlos Travassos Cortez 1. PREVIOUS REMARKS Presenting a communication on such a vast field as the subject of this work is usually a task for specialists. Only these are able to smoothly draw a global and coherent picture of their field of study. So, if you are not a specialist (even if you have a deep interest for the field) and you occupy your days working in an entirely different subject (say the physics of muonium states in semiconductors), you are surely in trouble! There are two possible solutions for this dilemma: a) ask a specialist and b) do it à la Newton (even if you're not one), climbing in the shoulders of giants. The mountaineering option was adopted here, and four giants helped me in viewing higher: Rui Vieira Nery and Paulo Ferreira de Castro with their História da Música [1], João de Freitas Branco with his História da Música Portuguesa [2] and José Carlos Travassos Cortez with his passioned and illuminating lessons on the history of Portuguese music that I was lucky to attend in the Conservatório de Musica de Coimbra [3]. I am very pleased to dedicate this work to his memory. Apart from Refs. [1-3], which are available in Portuguese only, all the other references are relative to introductory notes of compact-discs and are generally available in English as well. Of course these discographic indications are not extensive, but I believe they constitute a basis (surely not the only one!) for a good start in Portuguese-specialized melomania. -

http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/2175-7968.2013v1n31p119 JORGE AMADO AND THE INTERNATIONALIZATION OF BRAZILIAN LITERATURE Elizabeth Lowe University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign [email protected] Abstract: Jorge Amado (1912-2001) is the most translated Brazi- lian writer and the literary figure that has shaped the reception of Brazilian literature in the world. He is credited with opening the international literary market to the post-dictatorship generation of Brazilian writers. Yet Amado is also a controversial figure. The debate around him is sparked by what some believe is sexual and ethnic stereotyping in his post-1958 works and the reinforcement of “paternalistic “racial views. His reception therefore is mixed. For his English-language readers, he is a fascinating source of exotic and titillating narratives about the vast, unknown country of Brazil, and for Brazilians he is either a “great ambassador of Brazilian culture around the world” or a faux populist who dis- guises sexist and racist attitudes behind charming prose. This talk will address Amado’s literary career, his unique contributions to Brazilian letters, the challenges of translating his work, and his influence on the production of a new Brazilian literature for export Keywords: reception, controversy, translation. http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/2175-8026.2012n62p341 A PREFACE TO A THEORY OF ART-FEAR IN BRAZILIAN LITERATURE Julio França Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro Luciano Cabral da Silva Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro Abstract There is no tradition in the study of horror in Brazilian literature; with Álvares de Azevedo”s tales of Noite na Taverna generally considered as the only example of Gothic, terror or horror narrative quoted in literary history. This article aims to demonstrate that there are several works in Brazilian literature which could be classified as “fear literature”—a fictional narrative that produces “artistic fear”. In fact, some of the most important Brazilian authors, including Machado de Assis, Bernardo Guimarães, Aluísio Azevedo, Inglês de Souza, João do Rio, Humberto de Campos and Coelho Neto, penned works in the macabre during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. However, critics were either unable to identify them as works of horror or paid no attention to an area of fiction in which social problems were not realistically represented. The Portuguese Art of War in Northern Morocco During the 15 Century
Athens Journal of History - Volume 3, Issue 4 – Pages 321-336 The Portuguese Art of War in Northern Morocco during the 15th Century By Vitor Luís Gaspar Rodrigues This paper not only reviews the motives underlying the Portuguese expansionist project in Morocco in the 15th century, but also the political, economic, and particularly the social reasons that were in the basis of the Portuguese art of war in Morocco in that period. During the Iberian Reconquest (Reconquista), warfare was usually practiced by means of cavalcades, raids (razias) and ambushes, alongside with some siege actions. We will try to demonstrate that the Portuguese were forced to adopt a model of restricted territorial occupation and repeat the same technics and tactics of combat in Morocco, chiefly based on guerrilla war (guerra guerreada), as well as on siege and privateering actions, either offshore or onshore, by means of amphibian landings (saltos). We will also approach some of the changes that occurred in the defence systems of the Portuguese strongholds in North Africa, particularly at the turn of the 15th to the 16th centuries, as a result of the need to respond to the new challenges by the Moroccan armies equipped with fire weaponry. Portuguese Expansion in Morocco in the 15th Century: Main Causes The expansion project to Morocco by the Christian kingdoms from Iberia goes back to late 13th century, as attested by the Treaty of Soria, of 1291, signed by the monarchs of Castile and Aragon, which defined the areas to be occupied in the future by both kingdoms in North Africa, leaving the territorial stripe in the west of Ceuta to Portugal. -

Chapter 2. Native Languages of West-Central California This chapter discusses the native language spoken at Spanish contact by people who eventually moved to missions within Costanoan language family territories. No area in North America was more crowded with distinct languages and language families than central California at the time of Spanish contact. In the chapter we will examine the information that leads scholars to conclude the following key points: The local tribes of the San Francisco Peninsula spoke San Francisco Bay Costanoan, the native language of the central and southern San Francisco Bay Area and adjacent coastal and mountain areas. San Francisco Bay Costanoan is one of six languages of the Costanoan language family, along with Karkin, Awaswas, Mutsun, Rumsen, and Chalon. The Costanoan language family is itself a branch of the Utian language family, of which Miwokan is the only other branch. The Miwokan languages are Coast Miwok, Lake Miwok, Bay Miwok, Plains Miwok, Northern Sierra Miwok, Central Sierra Miwok, and Southern Sierra Miwok. Other languages spoken by native people who moved to Franciscan missions within Costanoan language family territories were Patwin (a Wintuan Family language), Delta and Northern Valley Yokuts (Yokutsan family languages), Esselen (a language isolate) and Wappo (a Yukian family language). Below, we will first present a history of the study of the native languages within our maximal study area, with emphasis on the Costanoan languages. In succeeding sections, we will talk about the degree to which Costanoan language variation is clinal or abrupt, the amount of difference among dialects necessary to call them different languages, and the relationship of the Costanoan languages to the Miwokan languages within the Utian Family. -
Cape Verde : Language, Literature & Music
Notes on the Historical Context of Claridade Ellen W. Sapega Abstract. This essay takes its starting point from the premise that a single coherent project for the publication of Claridade never existed, either in terms of the reviews contents or of its actual physical layout. After demonstrating that three very different incarnations of Claridade appeared at three distinct historical moments (1936-7; 1947-49; 1959-60), I set about examining each “series” in light of the specific date in which it appeared. Paying particular attention to the selection and treatment of texts written in Creole, I identify several clear-cut changes in the placement and framing of these texts that occurred between the first and the second series. This, in turn, indicates that the purpose and reception of Claridade changed significantly over the course of its publication, as the editors sought different solutions to the problem of how to provide a metaphoric entry of Cape Verdean culture into the “Portuguese” text. The literary review Claridade has undoubtedly received more critical attention than any other single publication in the history of Cape Verdean lit- erature. As it occupies a central, yet ambiguous, place in the literature of the archipelago, Claridade has been the object of much praise; yet, at the same time it has received its equal share of negative critical responses. The review’s founders were among the first to investigate the specificity of Cape Verdean experience, basing their studies on carefully documented customs, traditions and cultural practices of the islands, and the initial publication of Claridade in 1936 clearly marks an important historical moment in the process of imagining Cape Verdean identity as unique and autonomous from that of ^ 160 PORTUGUESE LITERARY & CULTURAL STUDIES 8 metropolitan Portugal. -
