One of the most popular means of portraying immigrant workers is through the employment of the hegemonic immigrant story, an anachronistic narrative that continues to be perpetuated both in cultural produ ctions and in the general debate about immigration. The hegemonic immigrant narrative is based on a storyline of progress that redeploys the constructed binary between the ix country of origin and the host country. The introduction argues for a different w ay of reading immigrant narratives that deconstructs such a binary in order to situate the new immigrant narrative as occurring under a world -system, in which the movement of people across constructed national boundaries is no longer situated between spati ally and temporally differentiated areas, but instead is seen as taking pla ce within a global system —one based on various economic and political relationships. The cultural productions in the dissertation provide varying representations of immigration and domestic labor and include works of literature and film. The first chapter looks at the ways in which the hegemonic immigrant narrative has been employed by two canonical Chicano texts and two contemporary films in order to trace the perpetuation of the myth of upward mobility and assimilation. Chapter two provides an analysis of alternative narratives written by Latina writers that challenge the ideological containment of the traditional story of migration. The third chapter continues to focus on repre sentations of domestic labor, but also includes the labor performed in the public sphere of the hotel industry. Ultimately, this dissertation is interested in looking at the ways in which cultural productions are using representations of labor and immigrat ion to alter the narrative of immigration that continues to perpetuate ideas of success and assimilation. Cultural productions about marginalized immigrant communities whose immigrant experiences are not necessarily stories of progress serve to disarticul ate the dominant immigrant narrative and ensure the visibility of immigrant patterns that have influenced the formation of the U.S. as a heterogeneous nation. x Introduction The issue of immigration is one of the most visible topics of discussion in the national arena, with everyone from right -wing Republican Pat Buchanan to California farmers offering their opinion. In Arizona, one of the states most affected by the influx of undocumented immigrants into the U.S., the Arizona Daily Star , a Tucson - based n ewspaper, sent an investigative team along the nearly 2,000 mile U.S./Mexico border in an attempt to provide their readers with an understanding of the issues surrounding the immigration debate. Their on -line four -part series, entitled “Sealing Our Border : Why It Won’t Work,” follows a group of journalists in their journey from San Diego to the Gulf of Mexico in a multimedia report that looks at the economic, cultural, and physical geography of the border. One of the most interesting parts of the series , “The Legacy of Gatekeeper and Hold the Line” investigates the role that the construction of physical barriers has played in the deterring of undocumented immigration. While most histories of the Bracero Program are nationwide or statewide in scope, this study explores the regional complexities of how and why the program was used in Sonoma and Napa Counties, how both the growers and laborers in the region felt about it, and how this was different from and similar to other regions. Government documents provided the statistics necessary to determine the demographic changes in the region due to the Bracero Program. Important primary source material that provided the human side of the story includes a number of oral history interviews I conducted, the collection of Wine Industry Oral Histories, and various regional newspaper articles.

Pren Princeton University In this article the authors undertake a systematic analysis of why border enforcement backfired as a strategy of immigration control in the United States. They argue theoretically that border enforcement emerged as a policy response to a moral panic about the perceived threat of Latino immigration to the United States propounded by self- interested bureaucrats, politicians, and pundits who sought to mobi- lize political and material resources for their own benefit. The end re- sult was a self-perpetuating cycle of rising enforcement and increased apprehensions that resulted in the militarization of the border in a way that was disconnected from the actual size of the undocumented flow. Using an instrumental variable approach, the authors show how border militarization affected the behavior of unauthorized migrants and border outcomes to transform undocumented Mexican migra- tion from a circular flow of male workers going to three states into an 11 million person population of settled families living in 50 states. Drawing on Michel Foucault’s work, this project analyzes the discursive strategies that created, shaped, and upheld a race-specific image of a “desirable” immigrant. I argue that government debates, media discourse, and public perception were part of a larger regime of knowledge/power that continually produced and reinforced the neoliberal ideal of a responsible, self-sufficient subject. This underlying neoliberal logic with its reductionist insistence on cost-benefit analysis foreclosed any attempt to engage in a serious moral/ethical debate about the merits and effects of the U.S. immigration system. At the same time, my research demonstrates that despite this foreclosure of the terms of debate, the mid-1990s discourse on immigration was characterized by a productive tension between its underlying neoliberal assumptions and other often contradictory values and objectives. In addition, I interrogate how long-standing and deep-seated anxieties about immigrants’ race, class, gender, and sexuality intersected with neoliberal logic in both the public discourse and the legislative process.
