Alice Eve is best known by Star Trek fans as Dr. Carol Marcus, Kirk’s love interest and the newest member of the Enterprise crew, in the new Star Trek hit "Into Darkness." Before Star Trek, she was already warming her way to nerd hearts everywhere with the female lead role in the romantic comedy film "She's Out of My League".

    To appear at CHI 2021 https://doi.org/10.1145/3411764.3445640 Tea, Earl Grey, Hot: Designing Speech Interactions from the Imagined Ideal of Star Trek BENETT AXTELL University of Toronto, TAGlab, Toronto, Canada COSMIN MUNTEANU University of Toronto Mississauga, ICCIT, Mississauga, Canada Speech is now common in daily interactions with our devices, thanks to voice user interfaces (VUIs) like Alexa. Despite their seeming ubiquity, designs often do not match users’ expectations. Science fiction, which is known to influence design of new technologies, has included VUIs for decades. Star Trek: The Next Generation is a prime example of how people envisioned ideal VUIs. Understanding how current VUIs live up to Star Trek’s utopian technologies reveals mismatches between current designs and user expectations, as informed by popular fiction. Combining conversational analysis and VUI user analysis, we study voice interactions with the Enterprise’s computer and compare them to current interactions. Independent of futuristic computing power, we find key design-based differences: Star Trek interactions are brief and functional, not conversational, they are highly multimodal and context-driven, and there is often no spoken computer response. From this, we suggest paths to better align VUIs with user expectations. Sie sind damit im Hinblick auf das vertretene Wertsystem, auf ihre mittransportierten ideologischen und politischen Botschaften zu lesen. Die US- Fernsehserie Raumschiff Enterprise, eine Sciencefiction-Serie, die erstmals 1966 vom amerikanischen Sender NBC produziert wurde und von den Abenteuern eines Raumschiffes im 23. Jahrhundert handelt, soll im Hinblick auf implizit mittrans­ portierte Botschaften untersucht werden. Diese Serie wurde im ln- und Ausland äusserst populär und wird bis heute auch im deutschsprachigen Raum immer wieder ausgestrahlt.1 Das führte dazu, dass es 1987 zu einer zweiten Staffel kam, Sfar Trek: The Next Generation (dt. Star Trek - Das nächste Jahrhundert)2; 1992 wurde mit einer dritten Staffel, Star Trek - Deep Space Nine, das Leben auf einer Weltraumstation inszeniert; 1995 besinnt man sich auf das Ur-Rezept und startet eine vierte Folge, Star Trek - Voyager, die wiederum von den Abenteuern an Bord eines Raumschiffes erzählt. Gerade an den Figuren der leitenden Besatzung von 1966 bzw. 1995 kann exemplarisch aufgezeigt werden, wie sich innerhalb von dreissig Jahren Ver­ änderungen auf gesellschaftspolitischer Ebene oder im Zeitgeist in den Rollenbildern niederschlagen. 1966: Der männliche Körper - idealisiertes Symbol der Herrschaft Im Jahr 1966 ist der Captain des Raumschiffes ein eher jugendlicher Mann weisser Hautfarbe, er hat mittelblondes Haar und blaue Augen, ebenmässige Gesichtszüge; er ist schlank und doch athletisch gebaut, die eng anliegende Uniform betont seine Figur. Seine erotische Ausstrahlung auf das andere Geschlecht ist eine zusätzliche wichtige Komponente dieser Figur.
