April 21, 7:00 pm Program Carex By Randy Mears The genus Carex is contained within the Family Cyperaceae (Sedge Family). Ironically, it is one of the least known genera to most people and happens to be the largest genus of flowering plants in the United States with more than 500 species represented. The unifying character of all Carex species is a structure called the perigynium which is a modified scale with fused margins which surrounds the pistillate flowers and is only open at the tip. This structure is paramount for separating all Carex species from one another. There are currently 73 species known to occur within the state of Florida. This presentation will, in large part, be a photographic introduction to most of the species that occur in Florida. Randy Mears is a Florida native born in Plant City. He has been studying Florida native plant species for more than 30 years and has become especially interested in grasses and sedges. He is a wonderful person to have show up a field trip since his knowledge of the sedge- family plants comes with lots of field experience. Randy is a Perigynia on Carex intumescens. VASCULAR FLORA AND VEGETATION CLASSIFICATION OF THE SOUTH ATLANTIC COASTAL PLAIN LIMESTONE FOREST ASSOCIATION OF CENTRAL GEORGIA by PATRICK SUMNER LYNCH (Under the Direction of J.L. Hamrick) ABSTRACT The South Atlantic Coastal Plain Limestone forest is a globally imperiled (G2) forest association known only from the upper Coastal Plain of central Georgia. These calcareous forest communities support diverse floristic assemblages unique among the Georgia Coastal Plain, but have not been subject to detailed floristic study. I conducted a comprehensive floristic inventory, multivariate community analyses and floristic quality assessments to document composition, elucidate community structure and underlying physiographic regimes, and assess habitat integrity for seven sites in Houston, Bleckley and Twiggs counties. Community analyses revealed twelve community types within two floristically defined domains corresponding to uplands and slopes, and bottomlands, respectively, and governed largely by moisture content and degree of inclination. Floristic quality assessments revealed varying degrees of floristic quality and habitat integrity corresponding primarily to local physiography and disturbance history. Floristic inventory recovered 339 vascular plant taxa representing 218 genera in 98 families, including 17 rare Georgia species. En el PNM se reconocen seis tipos de vegetación, predominando los bosques de Pinus-Quercus y de Quercus. Se encontraron 101 especies, distribuidas en 13 tribus y 51 géneros; dos de ellas naturalizadas (exóticas). Los miembros más numerosos son de las tribus Eupatorieae (26), Heliantheae (17), Astereae (11) y Coreopsideae (10). Los géneros mejor representados son Ageratina (11), Stevia (11), Pseudognaphalium (6) y Dahlia (5). Las especies endémicas al territorio de la República constituyen el componente más importante (54), siguiendo en relevancia las distribuidas de México a Centroamérica (16); solamente cinco (incluyendo las dos introducidas) también existen en el Viejo Mundo. El uso de estimadores no paramétricos indicó que el grado de completitud del inventario de la flora sinanterológica conocida hasta la fecha para el Parque es de entre 70 y 84%. Leaves can have many different shapes, but often narrow and coming to a point. •White flower •Thick, hollow green to reddish-purple stem. •Rooted along shoreline, but forms floating mat of erect stems. Mats can detach from shoreline. 7 Emersed Canna spp. Cana Distinguishing Characteristics •Ornamental growing tall with showy flower. •Large oval leaves pointing upward. •Usually growing in small clusters limited to the shoreline. 8 Emersed Cephalanthus occidentalis Buttonbush Distinguishing Characteristics •Woody, aquatic shrub with oval leaves coming to a point. •Loose clusters of round seed heads approximately ¾-inch in diameter. •Grows in shallow water, often out from the shoreline. 9 Emersed Non-native Colocasia esculenta Wild Taro Distinguishing Characteristics •Arrowhead-shaped terminal leaf up to 2 feet long. •3 primary leaf veins stretching to each lobe.
