The English Connection March 2001 Volume 5 / Issue 2 A bimonthly publication of Korea Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages March 2001, Vol. 5, No. 2 Communicative Language Teaching in Korean Public Schools: An Informal Assessment by Dr. Samuel McGrath Introduction his article focuses on the current status of communicative language teaching in the public schools in T Korea. In order to promote communicative competence in the public schools, in 1992, the Ministry of Education mandated that English teachers use a communicative approach in class. They envisioned communi- cative language teaching (CLT) replacing the traditional audio-lingual method in middle school English teaching and the dominant grammar-translation method of high school teaching. The new approach was supposed to start in the schools in 1995. Six years have passed since the policy was adopted. However, no formal assessment by the government seems to have been done on the success or otherwise of the program. continued on page 6 Empowering Students with Learning Strategies . 9 Douglas Margolis Reading for Fluency . 11 Joshua A. 1st Announcement July 31(Sun) - August 6 (Sat), 2016 Daejeon Convention Center, Daejeon, Korea Hope & Happiness: The role of home economics in the pursuit of hope & happiness for individuals and communities now and in the future Sponsored by DAEJEON METROPOLITAN CITY KOREA Invitation It gives me great pleasure to invite you to the 23rd IFHE World Congress 2016. Whether you are a passionate home economics professional or an interested allied professional, we invite you to participate in the global conversation that is IFHE World Congress. As indicated by our theme for 2016 - Hope and Happiness: The role of home economics in the pursuit of hope and happiness for individuals and communities now and in the future - we as home economists recognise that our profession is a key component of hope and happiness - critical for the wellbeing of individuals, families and communities. We also seek creative and innovative ways to communicate this message widely and effectively. As the only worldwide organisation concerned with home economics and consumer studies, it is imperative that IFHE seizes every opportunity to speak in full voice. World Congress gives us that opportunity. Since 1908, professionals, scholars and educators in home economics and allied fields have come together every four years to learn, share and inspire. Our consultative status with the United Nations and the Council of Europe gives us so much potential to extend congress outcomes and to see our resolutions put into action. We are pleased and excited to be staging IFHE World Congress in the Asian region for the first time since 2004. Daejeon, Korea, has built a reputation for the hosting of global conferences and is a hub for technology, education, research and development.

BAKS Papers Papers of the British Association for Korean Studies (BAKS Papers) was founded in 1991 to publish the editorially approved transactions of the then annual conferences of the Association. The journal has for several years actively solicited submissions from outside the conferences and the Association, and is now a fully peer-reviewed annual international journal. BAKS Papers began as a printed journal, but since BAKS Papers 14 it has been an exclusively online publication. This is the sixteenth issue of the journal. The theme for this Summer 2015 issue is Korean Identities in Global Context. These papers address issues of migration, nationality, religion, diplomacy, technology, legitimacy, communist ideology, and their intersections in defining and understanding identity.
