Signature ii Abstract This thesis provides a coherent documented history of the provision of religious education to Catholic children who did not attend Catholic schools in New South Wales from 1880 to 2000. The CCD movement is the title generally assigned to a variety of approaches associated with this activity. The Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) is an association of clergy and lay faithful, within the Catholic tradition, established in the 16th century, devoted to the work of Catholic religious education. In the 20th century the principal concern of the CCD came to be the religious education of Catholic children who were not in Catholic schools. -

Australia today The land Australia is unique in many ways. Of the world’s seven continents, Australia is the only one to be occupied by a single nation. We have the lowest population density in the world, with only two people per square kilometre. Australia is one of the world’s oldest land masses. It is the sixth largest country in the world. It is also the driest inhabited continent, so in most parts of Australia water is a very precious resource. Much of the land has poor soil, with only 6 per cent suitable for agriculture. DALKIN, ROBERT NIXON (BOB) (1914–1991), Air Force Officer
D DALKIN, ROBERT NIXON (BOB) (1960–61), staff officer operations, Home (1914–1991), air force officer and territory Command (1957–59), and officer commanding administrator, was born on 21 February 1914 the RAAF Base, Williamtown, New South at Whitley Bay, Northumberland, England, Wales (1963). He had graduated from the RAF younger son of English-born parents George Staff College (1950) and the Imperial Defence Nixon Dalkin, rent collector, and his wife College (1962). ARCHIVED CDS MEDIA RELEASES November 2004 - June 2015 MEDIA RELEASE 9 JUNE 2015 LNP GETS IT WRONG ON RUBBISH Action on Queensland’s growing rubbish problem is an important task that will benefit Queenslanders, jobs and the environment, environment groups said today, in response to statements by the LNP deriding Queensland government programs announced on World Oceans Day to combat plastic and drink container pollution. Ian Kiernan, AO, Chairman of Clean Up Australia said: “The LNP is talking rubbish because cleaning up the environment with a container deposit system will create hundreds of jobs and deliver millions of dollars to charities (who help the disadvantaged) as well as local sports clubs. We know Cash for Containers and plastic bag bans work – unlike the failed policies of the LNP when they were in government.” Jeff Angel, Convenor and Director of the Boomerang Alliance of 32 groups said: “The LNP needs to better inform itself. It seems to have swallowed beverage industry propaganda rather than take a reasoned and objective view. The facts are that a returnable deposit does not increase the cost of living and the recent government investigations found the financial cost on households to be zero. We would be happy to give the LNP the facts.” “Since the announcement by the government that it will be investigating a container deposit system to tackle the billions of drink containers littered or landfilled every year – the community support has been outstanding and our campaign is growing week by week across the state. The LNP is making themselves a target for community outrage.” Toby Hutcheon, for the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland said: “Taken together, a container deposit scheme and plastic bag ban will help stop Queensland becoming known as the rubbish state. -

Australia’s Martial Madonna: the army nurse’s commemoration in stained glass windows (1919-1951) Susan Elizabeth Mary Kellett, RN Bachelor of Nursing (Honours), Graduate Diploma of Nursing (Perioperative) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2016 School of History and Philosophical Enquiry Abstract This thesis examines the portrayal of the army nurse in commemorative stained glass windows commissioned between 1919 and 1951. In doing so, it contests the prevailing understanding of war memorialisation in Australia by examining the agency of Australia’s churches and their members – whether clergy or parishioner – in the years following World Wars I and II. Iconography privileging the nurse was omitted from most civic war memorials following World War I when many communities used the idealised form of an infantryman to assuage their collective grief and recognise the service of returned menfolk to King and Country. Australia’s religious spaces were also deployed as commemorative spaces and the site of the nurse’s remembrance as the more democratic processes of parishes and dioceses that lost a member of the nursing services gave sanctuary to her memory, alongside a range of other service personnel, in their windows. The nurse’s depiction in stained glass was influenced by architectural relationships and socio- political dynamics occurring in the period following World War I. This thesis argues that her portrayal was also nuanced by those who created these lights. Politically, whether patron or artist, those personally involved in the prosecution of war generally facilitated equality in remembrance while citizens who had not frequently exploited memory for individual or financial gain.
