Chapter 1 Introduction This thesis examines responses by Australian Catholics, predominantly in Victoria, to the social teachings of their Church, culminating with the creation by the bishops in 1938 of the Australian National Secretariat for Catholic Action (ANSCA), and their subsequent adoption and promotion through it of a political and economic philosophy called Distributism. Underlying the main narrative is a fundamental divergence of opinion about the efficacy and significance of the formation of the Catholic conscience through Catholic Action, as on the one hand introduced by the founder of the Young Christian Worker’s Movement (YCW) and future Cardinal Josef Cardijn and enhanced by the philosopher priest Don José María Arizmendiarrieta, and on the other repudiated by Australia’s ‘controversial Catholic layman’, B.A. Santamaria.1 A key reference point and yardstick throughout is the ‘Evolved Distributism’ of the great complex of worker-owned co-operatives founded by Arizmendiarrieta in the middle nineteen-fifties, at Mondragón in the Basque region of Spain, and the basis currently of processing by the Vatican of proposals for his canonisation.2 The approach is through serial biography – to capture through the prism of emblematic reformers the attendant clash of ideas, circumstances, aspirations and ambitions, in both the clerical and lay spheres. Quotation has been preferred to paraphrase, and protagonists and researchers to the greatest possible extent speak for themselves. Episcopal giants of the stature of Cardinals Manning and Moran and Archbishop Mannix provide context for a retrieval from varying degrees of unwarranted obscurity of laymen so notable in their day as, among others, the influential Campion Society members Frank Maher, Kevin Kelly and Murray McInerney and the ‘YCW Co-operator’ activists Ted Long, Bob Maybury, Frank McCann and Leon Magree. Inspired by their faith to seek through credit unions and other co-operatives an alternative social order reflective of its papal encyclicals, 1 T.R. The example of their dedication and its short to medium term outcomes is seen to challenge the Australian Church to resume its endorsement and advocacy of Distributism, in the evolved form to whose feasibility Mondragón so comprehensively now attests. About Distributism Akin to the hedgehog of Isaiah Berlin’s essay on Tolstoy, Distributism ‘knows one big thing’.3 Its basis is the passionate conviction that a just social order can be achieved only through a much more widespread distribution of property. Distributism favours a ‘society of owners’ where property belongs to the many rather than the few, and correspondingly opposes its concentration in the hands either of the rich, as under capitalism, or of the state as advocated by some Socialists. In particular, ownership of the means of production, distribution and exchange must be widespread. Other than in the case of sole proprietors or hands-on partnerships, labour should hire capital rather than capital labour. ‘Distributism’, in the view of the US Social Catholicism studies scholar, Jay P. Corrin, ‘represented the single most important synthesis of Catholic social and political thinking to emerge in the English-speaking community in the early twentieth century, and its values had a telling impact on Catholic intellectuals in Britain and America’.4 As noted by the prominent and exceptionally well-connected lay Catholic writer, Maisie Ward, in her 1944 biography of her fellow author and co-religionist, G.K.     Fred Paterson The Rhodes Scholar and theological student who became Australia's first Communist M.P. By TOM LARDNER Frederick Woolnough Paterson deserves more than the three lines he used to get in Who’s Who In Australia. As a Member of Parliament he had to be included but his listing could not have been more terse: PATERSON, Frederick Woolnough, M.L.A. for Bowen (Qld.) 1944-50; addreii Maston St., Mitchelton, Qld. Nothing like the average 20 lines given to most of those in Who’s Who, many with much less distinguished records. But then Fred Paterson had the disadvantage—or was it the distinction?—of being a Communist Member of Parliament— in fact, Australia’s first Communist M.P. His academic record alone should have earned him a more prominent listing, but this was never mentioned:— A graduate in Arts at the University of Queensland, Rhodes Scholar for Queensland, graduate in Arts at Oxford University, with honors in theology, and barrister-at-law. He was also variously, a school teacher in history, classics and mathematics; a Workers’ Educational Association organiser, a pig farmer, and for most o f the time from 1923 until this day an active member of the Communist Party of Australia, a doughty battler for the under-privileged. Fred Paterson was born in Gladstone, Central Queensland in 1897, of a big (five boys and four girls) and poor family.     82 The Communist Party Dissolution Act 1950 After the Second World War ended with the defeat of Germany and Japan in 1945, a new global conflict between Communist and non-Communist blocs threatened world peace. The Cold War, as it was called, had substantial domestic repercussions in Australia. First, the spectre of Australians who were committed Communists perhaps operating as fifth columnists in support of Communist states abroad haunted many in the Labor, Liberal and Country parties. The Soviet Union had been an ally for most of the war, and was widely understood to have been crucial to the defeat of Nazism, but was now likely to be the main opponent if a new world war broke out. The Communist victory in China in 1949 added to these fears. Second, many on the left feared persecution, as anti-Communist feeling intensified around the world. Such fears were particularly fuelled by the activities of Senator Joe McCarthy in the United States of America. McCarthy’s allegations that Communists had infiltrated to the highest levels of American government gave him great power for a brief period, but he over-reached himself in a series of attacks on servicemen in the US Army in 1954, after which he was censured by the US Senate. Membership of the Communist Party of Australia peaked at around 20,000 during the Second World War, and in 1944 Fred Paterson won the Queensland state seat of Bowen for the party. Although party membership began to decline after the war, many Communists were prominent in trade unions, as well as cultural and literary circles.

The well-attended event was also an opportunity for library staff to demonstrate the library’s newly installed ElarScan A2 scanner, as well as a new website, created to showcase the library’s Archbishop Goold Special Collection. For the past two years, Mannix Library staff have been involved with a project funded by the Australian Research Council titled A Baroque Archbishop in Colonial Australia: James Alipius Goold, 1812-1886. Goold was Melbourne’s first Catholic Archbishop and made a significant contribution to colonial Melbourne, amassing significant collections of artworks and books, and commissioning the construction of St Patrick’s Cathedral. Now - as in his lifetime - Bishop James Quinn is a controversial, and to many an unattractive, though highly significant figure of the foundation years of the Catholic Church in Queensland. My interest was aroused in discovering his true personality through my work in the history of Catholic education in this State, especially that of Mother Vincent Whitty and the first Sisters of Mercy. After several years of research I am still ambivalent towards him. I feel, however, this ambivalence is due to the paradoxes inherent in his personality rather than to any deficiency in my research. I have tried to show in this thesis the complexity of his character that these paradoxes caused. Bishop Quinn died in 1881, but the foundations of his work in Queensland were laid by 1875. To appreciate the shape of the Church that soared grandly from these foundations, to understand the conflict and the turmoil that surrounded the man and his creation, the bishop must be first seen in his original environment, Ireland and Rome.

The archives of the Irish Jesuit Mission to Australia, 1865-1931 One hundred and fifty years ago, two Irish Jesuits arrived in Melbourne, Australia at the invitation of James Alipius Goold, bishop of Melbourne. For the next hundred years, Irish Jesuits worked mainly as missionaries, and educators in the urban communities of eastern Australia. This article will seek to explore the work of this mission from 1865 until the creation of Australia as a Vice-Province in 1931, as told through the archival prism of the documents and photographs held at the Irish Jesuit Archives. Background to Irish Jesuit Archives In 1540, Ignatius of Loyola founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Ignatius, with his secretary, Fr Juan Polanco SJ, wrote in the Jesuit Constitutions in 1558, that ‘precise instructions were given to all Jesuits on the missions to write to their superiors at home, and to those in Rome, for the dual purpose of information and inspiration.’ From this moment onwards, the Jesuits, have been acutely aware to the value of documents. ‘God has blessed the Society with an incomparable fund of documents which allow us to contemplate clearly our origins, our fundamental charism.’ Father General Pedro Arrupe SJ, 1976 A history of Irish Jesuits in Australia (1865-1931) The Irish were not the first Jesuits in Australia.     GOLD TRIED 550 TIMES IN THE FIRE Timothy Alborn Historians inevitably face the challenge of selecting a subset of primary sources to stand for a much larger body of research. This challenge is magnified in the case of the history of ideas, where the need to provide closer readings tends to diminish that already small sample size. My article, “The Greatest Metaphor Ever Mixed,” distilled hundreds of sources from numerous genres down to a few dozen. A section on the various uses of the metaphor of gold tried in the fire, for instance, quotes twenty-eight sources that employ that metaphor, or roughly five percent of the sources I consulted. To find all these sources, I pursued two parallel tracks. The first was part of a larger project on the cultural and economic history of gold in Britain from 1780 to 1850, which will soon be published by Oxford University Press. For this project, I spent the last eight years looking for references to gold wherever they showed up: in treatises, novels, sermons, speeches, and newspaper articles, among many other sources. The bulk of my research utilized such online databases as Eighteenth Century Collections Online, Making of the Modern World, and Google Books. After realizing, a few years into this research, that gold appeared frequently and with interesting variations in numerous religious contexts, I did more targeted search in these databases (see my full list of search terms below for “gold tried in the fire”).
