Cathédrale Day 2 We arrive early at Caen this morning. After some free time in Arromanches for Bayeux Tapestry breakfast, we visit the nearby Landings Museum, where Allied ships successfully achieved the greatest landings in history. The museum contemplates the Château Ducal construction of Mulberry Harbour in Arromanches, a truly extraordinary technological feat which provided the key to victory in Normandy. Our guided Abbaye aux Hommes & Abbaye tour of Bayeux this afternoon includes a visit to the Gothic Notre Dame aux Dames Cathédrale. The original Romanesque church that stood here was consecrated in 1077, and it is likely that Bayeux’s famous tapestry was commissioned for this Pierre Huet Calvados Distillery occasion by one of its key characters, Bishop Odo. We continue to the Bayeux Abbaye de Cerisy la Forêt Tapestry Museum, to see the embroidery that recounts in great detail Willliam the Conqueror’s invasion of England in 1066. On arrival in Caen we check in at the 3* St Lô Hotel des Quatrans for a two night stay. A set 3 course dinner without drinks is included in our hotel this evening and the remaining night is on bed and breakfast Cathédrale Notre Dame at basis. Coutances Day 3 Jardin Public This morning we see the remains of Château Ducal in Caen, built around 1060 by William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy then King of England. The castle is Cornille-Havard Bell Foundry one of the largest medieval enclosures in Europe. We then visit Abbaye aux Hommes to see the abbey church, Eglise St Etienne. The church is a masterpiece Abbaye de la Lucerne of Norman Romanesque architecture, and the sparingly decorated nave was roofed in the early 12th century with stone vaulting that anticipates the Gothic Le Musée Christian Dior style. Like the Abbaye aux Hommes, the Abbaye aux Dames also has a Norman Romanesque church, La Trinité. Begun in 1060, it was consecrated six years Abbaye de Lessay later. After an included lunch in Caen, we enjoy a tour and tasting at the Pierre Huet Calvados Distillery. Day 4 After checking out of our hotel and en route to Coutances, we enjoy a guided tour at Abbaye de Cerisy la Forêt this morning. The origins of the Abbey date back to the sixth century, and according to legend Saint Vigor first built a religious monument on land that was offered to him following a fight with a dragon from which he emerged victorious. After free time for lunch in St Lô, we continue to Coutances to visit Cathédrale Notre Dame, the most famous Gothic monument in Normandy. Founded in the 1040s by Bishop Geoffroi de Montbray, it was financed by the local de Hauteville family using monies acquired in Sicily from where they had founded a kingdom a few years earlier. After visiting the Jardin Public, we check in at the 3* Inter Hotel Cositel at Coutances for a two Landing Beach at Arromanches night stay on half board basis. Day 5 This morning we enjoy a guided tour at the Cornille-Havard Bell Foundry. Manufacturing bells for churches, ships and public buildings throughout the world, our tour of the factory takes in the kiln, the moulds and the pits where the bells emerge after casting. After free time for lunch in Villedieu-les-Poêles, we have a guided tour at the Abbaye de la Lucerne, a Premonstratensian monastery following the rules set by Saint Augustine. On arrival in Granville this afternoon we visit Le Musée Christian Dior, located in the fashion designer’s childhood home. Bayeux Tapestry Day 6 We visit Abbaye de Lessay this morning, founded in the late 11th century. Lessay was spared from destruction after the French Revolution, unlike so many other religious establishments, but unfortunately, the same can’t be said about the summer of 1944 when the church was destroyed during allied bombing. A new church, rebuilt to the original plans was inaugurated in 1959 after a decade of research and work. After free time for lunch in St Lô, we continue to Caen for our late afternoon Brittany Ferries crossing to Portsmouth, and onwards coach travel back to our original pick up points. NB:- Please note we reserve the right to alter the above itinerary if required for operational reasons. Given the historic nature of the places visited, a certain degree of walking will Abbeye de Lessay be involved, and this holiday may not be suitable for those with mobility problems.
